01 Assembling a Cost Effective Development & Verication Solution for Electronic Warfare Systems

There are many aspects involved in the evaluation of electronic warfare (EW) systems. In addition to baseband signal
simulation and analysis of multiple threat and non-threat emitters, there are several other issues to consider when
constructing a complete test solution. These include up and down conversion, signal scenario length, gapless capture of
signals and multiple channel coherency among many other different elements. And once we have the pieces of the
solution in place we face the challenges of system alignment and calibration as well as development of specialized
generation and analysis algorithms. This paper will discuss the elements and construction of an effective EW solution that
will not exhaust an entire equipment budget. It will demonstrate the utility of such a solution for testing SIGINT systems,
radar warning receivers and signal jammers. Additionally, it will explore the technical considerations of different
alternatives to the various issues that will be encountered, along with their advantages and disadvantages.

02 New Technologies and Techniques for Wideband Analysis

Today's systems are operating over wider bandwidths and at higher frequencies, which can present signal analysis
measurement challenges in analyzing signals. This paper will discuss new analysis technologies and techniques that
provide performance, cost, and usability improvements over traditional approaches. As the bandwidth increases, the
ability to do advanced processing becomes increasingly difficult. We will touch on the various signal processing
capabilities modern instruments have and their ability to record, stream or do real-time analysis. Measurement techniques
that maximize dynamic range and other key metrics will also be discussed. The papers application focus will be real-time
and vector measurements for wideband radar or satellites primarily in X and Ka bands, more concentration on specific
applications will be applied based on interest.

03 Reducing MIMO and AESA Radar Risks with Earlier System Design Validation

Advanced radar system design simulation offers advantages in reducing system deployment risks and costs. For accurate
radar system performance evaluation, several simulation techniques are introduced. Moving Tx/Rx platforms and
environmental elements are key to carefully calculate the system performance for the accurate results. These simulation
techniques can be used to analyze advanced radar systems such as phased array, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO),
active/passive, and multi-static radar systems. Application examples will demonstrate how design simulation can be used
for these emerging applications.

04 Waveform Generation and Analysis of Complex Radar EW Systems

Testing Radar EW systems may require generating and analyzing Radar EW signals with complex environment scenarios
in the lab. This paper shows a custom testbed which is created by integrating simulation software with instruments. A user-
friendly UI is built with sequencing and digital upconversion (DUC) techniques for efficient memory usage and long data
sequence generation. Environment scenarios such as radar cross section (RCS), jamming, and interference can be
inserted for complex radar EW receiver test signals. The user can customize the simulation and then run the test with the
platform for performance evaluation to ensure design performance.

05 Digitizer-Based Phase Coherent Measurements for Multi-Antenna Phased Array Applications

With increasingly sophisticated adaptive beamforming techniques deployed on satellite-based phased array antennas,
better techniques to calibrate the relative magnitude and phase errors between radiating elements is needed. Using a
multi-channel wideband receiver that has low inter-channel phase variance can provide increased measurement speed
and test coverage for these antenna systems.

06 Troubleshooting and Maintaining Military Communication Systems

Military communication systems generally uses ground, vehicle, ships and aircraft communication enabled by RADAR,
SATCOM, VHF/UHF radio and microwave backhaul. Many of the current missions are critical as they are designed to uses
minimum resources with maximum effectiveness and precision. This means that systems used in current military setup
must be maintained to its maximum performance level. One of the ways to achieve this performance is to have deep dive
and precise troubleshooting of system and periodic health checks so that systems stays predictable and reliable. Military
communication system performance can be impaired due to failure of degradation of its primary hardware components
such as T/R modules, antennas, cable waveguide, filters and amplifiers. This paper discusses about major parameters
that needs to be tested along with their quick, precise and optimized way of measurement. The paper will provide key
measurement insights on RADAR and Satellite Communications field testing, Cable & Antenna measurements and
Microwave back haul testing. The paper will also focus on waveguide calibration and radio environment characterization.
Simplified and accurate test method for these tests will be discussed on Agilent Test Platforms.

07 Building a Continuous Source and Sink Solution for Satellite Power Test

When testing a satellite power conditioning and distribution unit (PCDU) or when doing satellite battery testing, a solution
that can not only source power but also load power is needed to satisfy the bidirectional power capabilities of these units
under test. For testing the PCDU there is a need to simulate the charge and discharge of the batteries. For battery testing
there is the need to source power to charge the batteries and load power to discharge the batteries. In both of these test
cases there is a need for a test solution that can source and sink power continuously and glitch free when crossing between
positive and negative current or vice versa. In this paper we will look at three source and sink solutions for satellite power
test, they are as follows:
• Deadband source-sink solution • Overlapping source-sink solution • Integrated source-sink solution. The first two
solutions, deadband and overlapping source-sink solution, require a separate power supply to source power and an DC
electronic load to sink power. The third solution, integrated source-sink solution, is a recent option to addressing satellite
power test needs. It is enabled by a new patented technology that provides seamless transitions between sourcing and
sinking power in a single instrument.

08 Intercepting and analyzing most complex, agile and elusive Signals

Working with today's complex and agile signals can be quite challenging. In recent years, advances in application software
and signal analyzers have made it easier to keep pace with analysis requirements. However, the relative benefits of the
various approaches are not widely understood. This paper will discuss and compare the available tools and techniques in
terms of discovering elusive signals and taking the vital next steps in RF engineering to complete the solution. Key topics
include making precise and selective measurements of complex and demanding signals, post-processing of captured
signals, replaying signals, and transferring captured signals to other analysis and simulation tools.

09 Flexible Digital Modulation Testing for Satellite Regenerative Payloads

Regenerative payloads pose a variety of test challenges not found in conventional analog bent-pipe satellite testing. This
paper will explore digital modulation formats used in satellite communications, including wide-band modulation, higher
order modulation schemes, and custom modulation formats. Key transmitter and receiver metrics such as Error Vector
Magnitude (EVM) and coded Bit Error Rate (BER) will be discussed, as well as how to measure these parameters at
various stages of a transmitter and receiver chain, from digital baseband to RF. Design and simulation software will be
combined with test equipment to show an integrated design-to-test flow to help minimize system integration risks, as well
as to provide software-defined flexibility for the hardware test solution.

10 RF Signal Monitoring Techniques & Analysis to Pinpoint Wireless Emitters

Increase in institutional focus on individual security has been the industry motivation to work out non-intrusive radio
frequency based security solutions. One of the ways providing non-intrusive securing solution is detection of RF emitter
detection and ensuring spectrum regulatory compliance. This is done through RF signal monitoring and analysis to get the
details of RF emitters in the surrounding area. Traditional methods for signal monitoring like spectrum analyzers and
digitizers does not provide enough intelligence to pinpoint at the right geo location of the wireless emitter. Signal monitoring
systems has evolved to provide complete profile of the RF signals on geographic maps. These system uses distributed
architecture and powerful estimation algorithms along with geo correlation techniques to provide insight into RF profiling
on geo maps. This paper discusses about the need of signal monitoring, its applications in various use models,
engineering setup and operations of signal monitoring network. The paper will also focus on Agilent RF sensors which
provides excellent mechanism for RF profiling and determining geo location of wireless emitter.
