INTRODUCTION
This presentation covers several product improvements for the 216 (4NZ3400-Up) and 226
(5FZ6700-Up) Skid Steer Loaders.
The 216 Skid Steer Loader was introduced in December 2001 and the 226 Skid Steer Loader
was introduced in September 2001.
NOTE: To teach all 216 and 226 Skid Steer Loader systems, use STMG 718 "Skid Steer
Loaders Introduction" (Form SESV1718).

ENGINE
The chart above compares the specifications between the previous 3034 engine and the current
3024C engine.
The 216 and 226 Skid Steer Loaders now have a new Caterpillar 3024C engine to meet Tier II
emission emission requirements of 2004. In order to meet the Tier II emission requirements the
engine emits less harmful gases into the environment.

OPERATOR’S STATION
The hydraulic oil filter restriction (1) and alternator output (2) indicators were moved to the left
instrument panel. The auxilliary override and continuous flow features (3) are combined into a
three-position switch, and are also located on the left instrument panel.

The hand throttle (1) has a new ergonomic shape and has been relocated from the floor to the
right side of the cab. The foot pedal (2) is similar to a pedal in the backhoe loaders. It is a
simplified, rugged design that provides better control over rough terrain.

REAR COMPARTMENT
The air restriction indicator gauge (arrow) was moved from behind the air filter to inside the rear
compartment door on the left loader tower.

POWER TRAIN
The two variable displacement hydrostatic pumps (1) are enclosed within a single pump
housing. These pumps power the drive motors. The implement and charge pumps (2) are also
enclosed within a single pump housing. Using single pump housings for the pumps reduces the
number of seals that are used, and therefore increases the reliability.

The interlock solenoid manifold that is located on the left side of the lower frame, has been
partially integrated into the work tool control valve (1). The single valve body will reduce the
number of hoses and fittings, therefore increasing reliability and accessability. The two
auxiliary solenoids (2), from the former interlock manifold, are located on the work tool control
valve.

The parking brake solenoid (arrow) is located on the left side of the lower frame. The work tool
solenoid is located in the base of the work tool pilot valve (not shown). The travel solenoid is
located in the base of the travel pilot valve (not shown).

CONCLUSION
This presentation has provided New Product Introduction (NPI) information for the Caterpillar
216 and 226 Skid Steer Loaders. All new components and their locations were identified and
discussed. Refer to the appropriate service manuals for complete information on the 216 and 226
Skid Steer Loaders.
