PAST SIMPLE

We use the past simple:

 to talk about a finished period of time or actions in the past.

 The simple past is used to talk about someone’s biography

Important notes:

 The form of the past simple is the same for all persons.
 In the past simple to regular verbs we add ed at the end
 For negatives and questions, verbs always go infinitive after did

Formula:

 [+] P.S.P. + verb in the past + complement. e.g.:

I STAYED WHIT FRIENDS
 [-] P.S.P +didn’t + verb in infinitive + complement e.g.
I DIDN’T STAY WHIT MY FRIENDS
 [?] did + P.S.P + verb in infinitive + complement + ? e.g.
DID YOU STAY WHIT YOUR FIENDS?

PRESET PERFECT

We use the present perfect for:

 Past experiences, when we don´t say exactly when they happened e.g.
I have been to London, but I haven´t been to Oxford
 Recent past actions often with just e.g.
I have cut my finger!
 With yet and already
 Already is used in afirmative sentences and goes before the verb e.g.
I´ve already seen this film twice.
 Yet is used with negative and interrogative sentences. It goes at the end of the phrase
e.g.
Have you finished your homework yet?
No, not yet.

PRESENT PERFECT + FOR / SINCE:

 We use the present perfect + for or since with non-action verbs (e.g. like, have,
know, etc.) to talk about something which started in the past and is still true now.
 We use How long…? + present perfect to ask about an unfinished period of time
(from the past until now).
 We use for + a period of time, e.g. for two weeks, or since + a point of time, e.g. since
1990

Example:

 They've known each other for ten years.

 Julia has had that bag since she was at university.
 How long have you worked here?
Since 1996.
 How long has tour brother had his motorbike?
For about a year.
