Analysis:
Looking back on what I had hoped to have accomplished by now just two weeks ago, I’m
both proud and disappointed. I’m proud that I was able to go to business symposium. I’m proud
of the constructive criticisms and empowering praise I recieved by the professionals I
interviewed. I genuinely am proud of my preparation and execution of both interviews and
networking. Although it was required, I still got out of my comfort zone and overcame the first
of many hurdles on this ISM journey.
Despite this pride, I am also a little let down. Rather than overcoming my fears and
making a phone call, I’m nearly a quarter of the way through the year and the idea of talking on
the phone sounds like the absolute worst case scenario. I know I can handle it. I know it’s
important, and not as scary as I’m making it out to be. Still, though, I am much better at
communicating in writing than I am in speech, especially when I can’t read or use body language
to aid the flow of conversation. Quite frankly, I’m still terrified -- much more so than my peers
seem to be, which is a little bit discouraging. Again, as I discussed in research assessment #3, it’s
important to remember that fears can only hold me back if I let them. I put a lot of work into
getting to be a part of this program, and in order to make the most of it, I need to put in the effort.
This week, I hope to make my first call. I want to reach out to the zoo, learn some new
information, and go from there. I’d also like to either call or email the veterinary eye institute
here in Frisco. I have a connection to the doctors there, and would love to learn more about the
different specializations of the veterinary pathway and how they came to that decision, so I
believe they would be a valuable resource for interviewing. With business symposium over,
that’s one less thing to distract me from my primary objective. I will make calls this week. I will
make progress. I will face my fears.
