I am regularly being reminded about several unique aspects of St. Anthony Shrine. First, there is the presence of the 25 friars who
live here. We have a unique approach to doing church. While acting in unity with the larger church, we intentionally try to be a
little more simple, plainspoken, and practical. Among our own friar community, we have a subtle, informal custom of “fraternal
correction” which tends to keep each one of us humble.
Second, people feel comfortable with the friars and like to be with us. We seem to attract a broad range of different kinds of
people. It is a regular occurrence during Mass to see someone who is very poor sitting next to someone who is very wealthy. Of
course, spiritually, there are more similarities than differences. Part of the attraction of the friars is that our training and
backgrounds are quite varied; we take some (somewhat mischievous) delight in contradicting your own stereotype of what a
Franciscan is or should be.
Finally, there is the matter of physical location here on Arch Street. Downtown has a harshness to it: the environment can be
anonymous, noisy, brusk. Here on Arch Street, in the churches and in the meetings rooms, there is a stark contract to what is
outside. We have a place of quiet, respect, and calm. People regularly say things like the following. “I feel better as soon as I walk
in here.” “All of my good childhood memories (of coming here with my grandmother) come back to me when I walk in here.”
“People are so nice here!”

This is an evening to celebrate and support the extraordinary work of the Franciscan Friars on Arch Street.
This year the focus is on the women we serve –the poor, the alienated and those who seek compassion and
acceptance.
This year’s Pope Francis Award recipient is Regina M. Pisa, Chairman Emeritus Goodwin; a passionate
advocate for women and children. Regina lives her Catholic values as a philanthropist who is committed
to social justice and taking action with courage, vision, compassion and humility.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Ms. Lorrie Higgins will serve as Honorary Chairs.
Jo-Anne and Jim Gallagher are graciously serving as co-chairs.
You still have an opportunity to help us as an individual or corporate sponsor. Or, you can simply make a
gift to help us reach our goal. Remember, all are welcome. Please see Father Tom Conway, OFM, or
Maryanne Rooney-Hegan, director of development 617-778-1645.
We are profoundly grateful to those have already stepped forward.
