The Connect People Network (CPN) is an independent, voluntary, charity organisation
which is led by people with extra support needs, and which promotes their rights around
friendships, relationships and sexuality. The aims of CPN are to support
• social opportunities,
• choice in relationships,
• access to sex education, and
• access to sexual health services.
The CPN grew out of the Irish Sex Education Network, a charity which was set up in
2002 to act as a forum for professionals who were advocating for better sexuality
education programs and policies in disability services. In 2009, a strong group of self
advocates became involved with the Irish Sex Education Network, and based on the
principle ‘nothing about us without us’, the organisation changed its name and core
activities. CPN is now an advocacy based organisation representing people with extra
support needs, their families and circles of support. We have five project groups, based
on the identified needs and interests of our members. These are:
1. CPN Social Group –a group that supports people with extra support needs to
make friends and relationships and engage in social activities in the community.
2. Accessible Information and Training Group – a group that helps people with extra
support needs to get information about relationships and sexuality, and supports
staff and family training events.
3. Legislation and Rights Group –a group which supports self advocacy by people
with extra support needs around relationships and sexuality.
4. Connecting Rainbows –a LGBTQ group for people with extra support needs.
5. Inside Out –a drama group for people with extra support needs that explores
identity, particularly around relationships and sexuality.
The CPN recognises the importance of resources for learning, teaching and research
purposes. We hope that this database will be invaluable to everyone who is committed
to the CPN’s vision and aims.
The CPN would like to thank the Community Foundation for Ireland for their financial
support in helping us create this database. Compiling this database was a mammoth
task, and we thank all the editors for their hard work. In particular, we acknowledge
Grace Kelly, who voluntarily gave so much of her time and expertise to make sure this
database was both up to date and comprehensive.
We welcome your feedback on what resources you find useful. Please let us know when
you come across resources that you think others will find helpful and we will add them to
the database.

CPN Chairperson 2012
(RUA Coordinator, St John of God Services)

Introduction
Welcome to the Sexuality and Disability Resource Database of the Connect People
Network (CPN). This database is a revised and updated version of the database
originally created by Gert Job in 2004. The new database allows members to search for
resources under a number of key headings. There is a list of easy-read resources for
people with extra support needs, as well as resources to support parents or carers when
talking about relationships and sexuality with a relative with extra support needs. There
is also a list of sex education and sexual health training manuals and policies for
professionals working in education, health and residential settings.
We hope that the resource database is something that all our members will find useful.
We intend to regularly update the database and as part of this, we welcome any
feedback members can give about resources they would like added to the database and
comments they might wish to make on resources already on the database.
Please note, that because sexual attitudes and mores are continuously changing, with
only a few exceptions we have only listed resources in this database that date from 1990
onwards. Disability terminology has also changed over time and in different countries. In
the CPN, our members prefer the term ‘people with extra support needs’ over the more
widely used terms ‘people with disabilities’ or ‘disabled people’. Unfortunately, some of
the authors listed in this resource database have used terminology which is considered
offensive to our members, please be mindful of this in your reading.
To make any comments please contact us at: 087 185 7578 or cpnireland@gmail.com
