Introduction

Background of the study

In this world, the point that we have all Filipinos concurred is that we need more knowledge about

freedom. Our nation is currently enduring a great deal of issues that can be explained by helping

everybody to get them in bumbling along messy land. As our nation turns out to be more innovative,

other than modernization is one of the variables that our nation can impact to a change. Legends are alive

in the cutting-edge time frame. Modern heroes not simply fight using the brutality that blood may stream

but a hero that could help our nation in economic progress and in passing of legislation that is equal to

the eyes and in the heart of each individual living in our nation, which could fight off the “Damasos” in

our society.

Today, Dr. Rizal's brilliances, sympathy, courage, and patriotism are remembered and perceived

by the Filipino individuals. His two books are consistently being dissected by understudies and experts.

Dr. Jose Rizal remains relevant today in this age of the millennials in light of the fact that the youth need

a model for absolute character development, a symbol for brilliance in both science and craftsmanship,

an example of selfless love for nation and individuals, and a motivation for struggle, penance, and diligent

work in spite of the considerable number of temptations to simply appreciate life and exploit every one

of the comforts the cutting edge world offers.

It is important to ponder Rizal's life and his compositions including different heroes because of

the commitment they provide for the nation is invaluable. We, the youth, only know just the little

foundation of their lives and works, and we are already moved, what if we study and dig deeper into this?

Obviously, we will learn numerous exercises and motivations with their works.

Objectives
The objectives of the study are to determine the impact of Rizal’s heroism in the modern world

today as well as to identify the significance of heroism. Another objective of the study is to help the

students to know and learn how Rizal became one of our National heroes.

Scopes and Limitations

This research aims to determine the range of knowledge of the students studying in Mapua

University, Makati City. There will be a random sampling, but most of the respondents will be students

from batch 2018 in order to ensure that they already have basic knowledge regarding Rizal because they

already took up or are taking up the course The Life and Works of Rizal. Survey questionnaires will be

distributed to the students. There will be approximately fifty (50) respondents. The data that will be

gathered will only be limited to the knowledge of the current students of Mapua University, Makati City

campus.

Statement of the Problem

The research aims to answer the following questions:

● How well do the students of Mapua Makati know Rizal’s literary works?

● What do the students know about Rizal’s ideologies?

● What are the impacts of Rizal to the students of Mapua University - Makati?

Significance of the Study

This research will contribute to furthering the studies related to Rizal’s Heroism in Modern World

and will be beneficial to the following: To the students, it will allow them to have a better picture of

Rizal’s contribution. Their current knowledge about Rizal will increase and become much wider with
the help of this research as it will determine the range of knowledge of the students and will be able to

make them aware of other contributions of Rizal to the country as well as other notable details. To the

teachers, it will help them to have additional knowledge and learnings about Rizal’s life and composition.

Also, they will be able to determine the knowledge of their students in which they would be aware of

what aspect of the curriculum should they focus more based on what the students understand and it will

serve as a motivation for them to do better and to exert more in teaching Rizal for the heritage of the

Philippines. To the Filipinos, this study will encourage them and appreciate the Rizal’s life and

compositions and its heroism. With this research, they will have an additional knowledge Rizal and their

knowledge about Rizal will not be limited to him being the national hero of the Philippines hence they

will also know about his works, ideologies and other important details about him that Filipinos should

know more.

Review of Related Literature

In our modern world we consider overseas workers also known as OFW as the modern hero in

our era. Being hero in one’s country does not mean that you need to have supernatural powers in order

to help others and earn all the fame and respect of the people. In order to be considered as national hero

one should be able to exhibit the traits that will protect the well-being of the Filipino citizen. The strong
urge to help the citizens of the Philippine and have great pride to the country, the Philippines, would

spark the sense of nationalism.

According to the article A Close Encounter of the 21st Century ‘Rizal’ at the Bumpy Road of

Buhisan, written by Bentazal R.N (2018), there is one thing that unites all the citizens of the Philippines

regardless of their age, religion, gender, social status, ethnic background and such of the likes is our

nationalism. Bentazal (2018) in order for a Filipino citizen to be considered as a modern national hero

they should possess a heroic character that is comparable to the well-known national hero of the

Philippines, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. This characteristic that could be compared to Dr. Jose P. Rizal is by just

being a good citizen in the country who comply with the laws and rules and regulations in the country.

In our Generation nowadays where the presence of modern technology and social technology is

changing our lives or rather the lifestyle of young people, the youth or millennials what we call them

nowadays can still learn and gain some learnings in reading the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal. Palmos

(2017) a coordinator for peace education, stated that our national hero is still relevant to the young people

nowadays, he even added that Dr. Jose Rizal has been one of his inspiration in his past time and for him

a revolution is not something that can be only be done by applying physical contact or using firearms,

but by using pens that can write words because for him is mightier than swords, palmos (2017) also stated

that the power of writing that can change the effects is the one that the millennials can learn from reading

the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal.

As of today, where Rizal law is being applied, Millennials are beginning to know a little or two

about how the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal. According to Pindeda (2018) Millennials should bear in

mind that the way they act, what they feel and what they do are very important in their way of life, since

in those kind of things they can be determined as a respectful and well-mannered person which is a must

in being a matured person. Palmos (2017) stated that if the person always think of positive and good

things about people, they will feel the positive vibes and energy, but if they don’t think well about other
person and always thinking negative towards them, this is something that is not good, Palmos (2017)

pointed that Dr. Jose Rizal doesn’t want violence that’s why he insisted that the pen should be more

reasonable on what we people should use to propagate what we must do for our country, Palmos (2017)

also stated that we need to make him as an inspiration as before we speak of bad words, post somethings

in the social media and before we interact with other person, we should know first the consequences and

reflect on Rizal’s relevance since Dr. Jose Rizal wanted change that was found in a peaceful

matter/process that’s why he opted and choices pen because by using pen he can propagate what is peace

and what has to be done during the next/present generation.

It is significant that the millennials should find out about our national hero. The most significant

heritage that Dr. Jose Rizal left to the youth is his statement that the hope of the homeland is in their

grasp. Not in the lawmakers, not even in the representatives, or social and political pioneers. The inquiry

we post to today is whether the present youth have proven themselves deserving of the legacy left by our

national hero.

It is valuable for the millennials to look again at the life of Rizal, particularly his scholarly and

professional achievements, his energy for magnificence and his drive for accomplishment. He was not

satisfied being just a specialist or doctor. He buckled down in numerous fields of undertakings, and he

succeeded as an author, artist, writer, agriculturist, network coordinator, painter, stone carver, surveyor,

designer, and architect. He was multi-gifted, and he could perform multiple tasks past the extent of

ordinary human accomplishments. I accept that Rizal keeps on being important today as a model for

every youthful Filipino who seek to break boundaries and accomplish more than the ordinary.

As indicated by Atty. Jimenez (2017), a good number of young Filipinos are making their folks

glad and proud. In any case, it is also sad to believe that huge numbers of millennials are spoiled brats
who imagine that they are qualified for every one of the solaces that are fruits of the very long and hard

battles their parents experienced. There are many young people today who are into medications, liquor,

pre-marriage sex, betting, and negligible wrongdoing. Huge numbers of the youthful are not doing

admirably in school, and some who are now working bounce starting with one employment then onto

the next. They can't appear to change well to the workplace, and they demonstrate some show trouble in

consenting to organization arrangements and satisfying guidelines. They have low resilience levels and

are effectively disillusioned when presented to weights and stress.

Valdeavilla, R (2018), That Rizal reveal that his legacy lives on the Philippines. He is known as

brilliance, compassion, courage, and patriotism that are greatly remembered and recognized by our

Filipino people. His two novels are continuously being analyzed and learned by the students and

professionals. Even now colleges and universities in the Philippines even required their students to take

a subject that centers around the life and work of Rizal. On this day the Filipinos celebrated the Rizal

Day to commemorate his life and works. The people would recognize his advocacy to achieve liberty

through peaceful means rather than violent revolution. The researcher as mentioned that the Filipino still

admired Jose Rizal works and his heroism to the Philippines that his two novels are still being learned

and studied to the students in college or universities as their subject that show that Jose Rizal is our legacy

of being our national heroes in the Philippines. The students would also recognize the advocacy that want

to achieve liberty to make peace rather than having a violent revolution in the society.
Methodology

The researchers used a descriptive research design in gathering new data and facts regarding the

impacts of Rizal’s heroism to the students. Specifically, the research used an inductive approach in order

to formulate a hypothesis regarding the impact of Rizal's heroism towards Mapua Makati students. The

research data analysis is mainly qualitative. By using qualitative data analysis, the researchers are able

to come up with a definite conclusion.

The research is designed to determine the Mapuan’s perception regarding Rizal being the national

hero of the Philippines and his heroism towards the country. As for the research data collection method,

the researchers used a survey questionnaire in order to collect data. The researchers used a random

sampling method in order to choose respondents from the second year students batch 2018. The

researchers made use of technology for easier data gathering which is through the use of Google Forms

and spread the survey questionnaire online. The study was conducted during the first term of the

academic year 2019-2020.

The participants were from Mapua University, Makati students. The study is limited to fifty (50)

participants and the data that were gathered will be analyzed based on the perception of the students.
Additionally, the participants were randomly selected as the google forms were sent randomly in which

there were no specific student or group of students that were required to answer the survey.

The survey questionnaires are distributed through the use of social media, such as Facebook

Messenger and emails. The survey questionnaire consists of ten (10) questions in identifying what the

students think about the heroism of Dr. Rizal. The survey questionnaire also included of profile sheet

which is optional for the students, instructions, and questions regarding their thoughts about the relevance

and significance of the Dr. Rizal. The responses of the participants remained confidential and were

merely used for research purposes.
