PHY101 (Mechanics): Assignment 7

1. Show that if the total linear momentum of a system of particles is zero then the angular
momentum is independent of the choice of origin.

2. Find the moment of inertia of a uniform sphere of mass M and radius R about an axis
passing through the center.

3. A particle is fired at an angle θ with velocity v0 towards a planet of radius R and mass
M (as shown). Initial distance of the particle from the center of the planet is 5R. For
what angle θ will the particle just graze the surface of the planet.

(a) Figure for problem 3. (b) Figure for problem 4.

4. A cylinder of mass M and radius R is rotated in a uniform V-shaped groove (as shown)
with constant angular velocity ω. Coefficient of friction between each surface and the
cylinder is µ. What torque must be applied to the cylinder to keep it rotating?

5. A pendulum is made of two disks each of radius R and mass M separated by a massless
rod. One of the disks is pivoted through its center by a small pin. The disks hang
in the same plane and their centers are a distance l apart. Find the period of small
oscillations.

6. A cylinder of radius R and mass M rolls without slipping down a plane inclined at an
angle θ. The coefficient of friction is µ. What is the maximum value of θ for the cylinder
to roll without slipping?
