1. OBJECTIVES The students must be able to:
 Explain the literary, biographical, linguistics, and sociocultural contexts and discuss how they
enhance the text’s meaning and enrich the reader’s understanding.
 Formulated key ideas about the genre of the novel as a national narrative informed by the
extratextual elements surrounding its writing.
 Respond critically to the excerpt of the novel and consequently articulate this response through
an exhibit of individual posters campaigning for lasting peace in Mindanao.

2. CONTENT This lesson tackles novel as a genre, realism, verisimilitude, naturalism, social realism, narrative, and
heteroglossia through discussing salient features in Antonio Enriquez’s Green Sanctuary.

4. PROCEDURES

Preparatory  Greetings
Activity  Opening Prayer
 Attendance
 Motivation: Hook the students interest by asking them to recall an incident/situation that makes them upset
regarding their community. Tell them to write this anecdote and share it in class.

1. Do you feel afraid about your anecdote/your classmate’s anecdote?

3. Do you think that it happens in other part of the country? Explain your answer.

Activity Activity 1
1. The class will be divided into five groups.
2. Each group will collect current information about the issues in Mindanao by gathering information from
newspaper, magazines, periodicals, and internet.
3. Instruct the students to share their answers in class.

Discussion of novel as genre will follow.

Activity 2

Pre-reading
1. Instruct the students to brainstorm about the setting of the story “Green Santuary”.
2. Let the students write the questions that they have about Cotabato.
3. At the end of the lesson, let the students go back with the table below, and list the things that they learned about
Cotabato based on the story.
