*FIRST: LITERATURE
*To SETTLEMEN TO 1900
The first writers of English in Canada were visitors—explorers, travelers, and British
officers and their wives—who recorded their impressions of British North America in
charts, diaries, journals, and letters. These foundational documents of journeys and
settlements presage the documentary tradition in Canadian literature in which
geography, history, and arduous voyages of exploration and discovery represent the
quest for a myth of origins and for a personal and national identity.
*TO 1900 THEMES
FICTION: After the 1950s this tentativeness in fiction either became itself the subject of
the novel or was dissipated in more confident forms of writing.
UNIVERSE: During the 1980s and ’90s, increasing attention was also paid to the
plurality and diversity of voices across the country.
POETRY AND POETICS: Fueled by fervent literary nationalism and anti-Americanism,
by the expansion of new presses and literary magazines, and by the beckoning of
avant-garde forms, poetry blossomed after 1960.
*SECOND: DANCE
* //DANCE//Folk dance exists on a variety of levels and folk dancers think of it in many
ways. It is vernacular in that it is characteristic of a particular time and place and
relates to a popular rather than an elite aspect of a culture. It also belongs to the "little"
tradition within the "great" tradition of a society- it is primarily an oral or customary
tradition, unwritten and unofficial.
*THIRD: MUSIC
*//MUSIC//The music of Canada has reflected the diverse influences that have shaped
the country. Indigenous Peoples, the Irish, British, and the French have all made
unique contributions to the musical heritage of Canada.
* TYPES OF MUSIC: BLUES (Electric guitar acoustic guitar piano Hammond organ
harmonica bass guitar upright bass drum saxophone vocals trumpet trombone), JAZZ
(Canada, specifically Toronto, has a rich jazz history. Oscar Peterson, Paul Bley,
Kenny Wheeler, and Diana Krall would be on Canada's Mount Rushmore of jazz.), and
PUNK (The Riptides. The Riptides have been around for damn near 2 decades and
are still killing it today. ...
Reset. ...

The Real McKenzies. ...
D.O.A. ...)
*FOURTH: THEATER
*Canada's contemporary theatre reflects a rich diversity of regional and cultural
identities. Since the late 1960s, there has been a concerted effort to develop the voice
of the 'Canadian playwright', which is reflected in the nationally focused programming
of many of the country's theatres. Within this 'Canadian voice' are a plurality of
perspectives - that of the First Nations, new immigrants, French Canadians, sexual
minorities, etc. - and a multitude of theatre companies have been created to
specifically service and support these voices.

*GRAPHIC ARTS: Labeled as Canada’s “first design guru,” Allan Fleming left a lasting
legacy following his passing in 1977. He trained in London and Europe in the mid-
1950s before returning to Canada and creating the Canadian National Railway logo in
1959, which hasn’t changed in nearly 60 years. From 1968 to 1976, he was the chief
designer at University of Toronto Press and transformed the look of scholarly
publishing in the country.
