Grading Policy:
Assignments (Two assignments) 10%
Seminars (Two Seminars) 10 %
Exam 1 2/16/05 20%
Exam 2 3/ 23/05 20%
Final Exam 5/02/05 40%
Homework: I’ll assign plenty of homework after each lecture. Homework is neither
collected nor graded. The best way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. I
encourage you to work in groups on the homework. Since you’ll be required to answer
the tests without using books, notes, or Calculators, I recommend that you do as much
homework as possible without using any of them.

Office Hours: You should make an effort to meet me outside the class for help on
homework problems or for assistance in preparing for an examination. Please also feel
free to call me to set up an appointment for discussion.

Seminars: These are brief presentations on the assigned topics. The topics I assign will
be to demonstrate the application of linear algebra to a variety of real life problems.
I seminar - 02/2/2005. II Seminar - 4/20/05
You are also expected to submit a brief write up of your presentation.

Assignments: There will be two/three assignments. You will be expected to use

MATLAB or similar software to do some of these assignments. These assignments will
be announced in the class and the tentative dates are 2/14/05 and 3/14/05, and 4/13/05.
Best two assignments will be considered for grading.

I recommend the following excellent books for reading besides the prescribed text.

1. Gilbert Strang, Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Academic Press Inc, 1976.
2. H. Anton and R C Busby, Contemporary Linear Algebra, John Wiley, 2003.
3. K. Hoffman and R Kunze, Linear Algebra, Prentice Hall, 1971.
