explain operations of the planetary
gear unit.

Planetary Gear Construction

The planetary gears have three types of
gears - the ring gear, pinion gears, and
sun gear - and the planetary carrier. The
planetary carrier is connected to the
Ring gear Planetary gear Sun gear input drum
center shaft of each pinion gear and
makes the pinion gears revolve.
With this set of mutually connected
gears, the pinion gears resemble plan-
ets revolving around the sun, so they are
called the planetary gears.
Normally, plural planetary gears are
combined in the planetary gear unit.

Brakes (B1, B2 and B3) Brakes (B1, B2 and B3)

1. Description
There are two types of brakes fixing
elements: the band type and the wet
multiple-disc type.
The band type is used for the B1
brake and the wet multiple-disc type
for the B2 and B3 brakes. In some
Outer spring automatic transaxles, the wet multi-
Piston rod ple-disc type is used for the B1 brake
Inner spring also.

circumference of the drum.
One end of this brake band is locked
to the transaxle case with a pin, while
the other end contacts the brake pis-
ton through the piston rod, which is
operated by hydraulic pressure. The
brake piston can move on the piston
rod by compressing the springs.
Piston rods of two different lengths
are provided to enable the clearance
between the brake band and drum to
be adjusted.
NOTICE:
When the brake band is being
replaced with a new one during over-
hauling of an automatic transaxle,
soak the new brake band for 15 min-
utes or longer in the ATF (Automatic
Transaxle Fluid) before installation.

3. Band type brake (B1) operation

When hydraulic pressure is applied
to the piston, the piston moves to the
left in the piston cylinder, compress-
Direction of ing the springs. The piston rod
drum rotation Piston rod moves to the left with the piston and
Piston pushes one end of the brake band.
As the other end of the brake band is
fixed to the transaxle case, the diam-
eter of the brake band decreases, so
the brake band clamps down on the
drum, holding it immovable.
At this time, a high frictional force is
Brake band
generated between the brake band
Transaxle case and drum to cause the drum, or a

member of the planetary gear set, to
Inner spring
become immovable.

When the pressurized fluid is drained

from the cylinder, the piston and pis-
ton rod are pushed back by the force
of the outer spring, so the drum is
released by the brake band. Also, the
inner spring has two functions: to
absorb the reactive force from the
drum, and to reduce the shock that is
generated when the brake band
clamps the drum.

move inside the cylinder, forcing the plates into con-

force between plates and discs, the drive side plates
and driven discs rotate at the same speed. This

connected to the ring gear, and the power from the

2. Disengaged (C1)
When the hydraulic pressurized is released, the fluid
pressure in the cylinder decreases. This allows the
Check ball check ball to move away from the check valve, which
it attempts to do due to the centrifugal force that is
Piston applied to it, and the fluid in the cylinder is drained out
through the check valve.

Centrifugal fluid pressure

applied to piston (original clutch pressure)
pressure chamber pressure that is controlled by the

valve body, the pressure that is
applied on the fluid in the piston fluid
pressure chamber also exerts influ-
ence, which is dependent upon
engine speed fluctuations.
In order to eliminate this influence, a
canceling fluid pressure chamber is
provided opposite to the piston fluid
pressure chamber.
By utilizing the lubrication fluid such
as that of the shaft, the same amount
of centrifugal force is applied, thus
canceling the centrifugal force that is
applied to the piston itself.
Accordingly, it is not necessary to
discharge the fluid through the use of
a check ball, and a highly responsive
and smooth shifting characteristic
has been achieved.

One-way Clutch
Front & rear No.1 one-way
sun gears clutch and B2 hub When the planetary gear unit is
designed without considering shifting
shock, B2, F1, and F2 are not neces-
sary. Just C1, C2, B1, and B3 are ade-
quate.
Also, it is difficult to make the fluid pres-
sure is applied on the brake simulta-
No.2 one-way clutch Outer race B3 hub
neous with the moment that the clutch
operating fluid pressure is released.
Therefore, the No.1 one-way clutch (F1)
operates via the B2 brake to prevent the
front and rear sun gears from turning
Rear planetary carrier counterclockwise. The No.2 one-way
clutch (F2) prevents the rear planetary
carrier from turning counterclockwise.
The outer race of the No.2 one-way
clutch is fixed to the transaxle case. It is
assembled so that it locks when the
inner race (rear planetary carrier) is turn-
ing counterclockwise and turns freely
when the inner race is turning clockwise.
In this way, using one-way clutches
switches the gears by always applying
or releasing the fluid pressure on one
element.
That is, the function of the one-way
clutch in the planetary gear unit is to
ensure smooth gear shifting.

Overdrive Gear Unit General

The overdrive gear unit is an indepen-
dent planetary gear unit with a gear ratio
O/D planetary gear unit less than 1.0 (approx. 0.7-0.8). It is com-
Counter drive gear O/D direct clutch (C0)
bined with a conventional 3-speed plan-
3-speed planetary gear unit
O/D brake (B0)
etary gear unit and is equivalent to the
4th speed gear.
The overdrive gear unit consists of the
planetary gear set, brake (B0), clutch
(C0), and one-way clutch (F0).
The power is input to the overdrive car-
rier and output from the overdrive ring
O/D planetary
ring gear gear.
Normally, when the vehicle speed goes
O/D planetary carrier O/D one-way
clutch (F0)
over 40 km/ h in the "D" range, shifting
O/D planetary pinion gears up to the overdrive gear becomes possi-
O/D planetary sun gear ble. It is also possible to drive without
shifting up to the overdrive gear if that
suits the driver.
