ROBIN HOOD

1. What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues does Robin
need to address? Which are most urgent? Why?

As Robin Hood pondered the progress of his campaign against the High
Sheriff of Nottingham, the disposition of his forces, the Sheriff’s recent
moves of growing his troops stronger and becoming better organized,
and the options that confronted him like changing their policy of outright
confiscation of goods to one of a fixed transit tax, Robin need to address
also the following issues:
 Increasing size of the band, as new recruits are coming in.
 Declining vigilance among his growing Merrymen.
 Discipline is becoming hard to enforce among them.
 Their growing number begins to exceed the food capacity of the
forest and he even don’t know the half of the men he run into.
 Their small bivouac became a major encampment that requires
bigger area.
 Declining revenues since travellers preferred to travel in a more
costly and inconvenient way than to having all their goods be
confiscated by the band.
 With declining revenues and increasing size of the band, it will
therefore increase the cost of their provisions and more likely to
drain the band’s financial reserves.
 His invitation to join the conspiracy and his future amnesty in
return, for the release of King Ricahrd the Lionheart.

The most urgent concern that Robin should address is: How he could
handle the band to fulfil its mission for the poor as it grows in
number, before the Sheriff will have a chance to deliver a mortal
blow on them?

Why? As we refer it to the band’s external and internal strength and

weakness accordingly (SWOT analysis), its external factors is beyond
the control of Robin, he should focus first to the band’s internal factors, it
is good that the band is growing, as he believes that there is strength in
numbers, it is important that he should look into first on the band’s
internal weakness on how to handle its declining vigilance and
discipline, and on how he could increase the declining financial reserves
of the band.

2. Is the band’s traditional mission of robbing the rich and giving to

the poor becoming obsolete in light of events? Is a whole new
strategic direction (mission, objectives, strategy) needed? Why or
Why not?

The band’s traditional mission of robbing the rich and giving to the poor
is NOT becoming obsolete in light of events. As Robin thinks of
changing their policy of outright confiscation of goods to one of a fixed
transit tax, this whole new strategic direction is not needed, it will just
lead them away to band’s purpose and existence. His lieutenants
strongly resisted for the idea because they need to consider that the
farmers and townspeople are their most important allies, taxing them will
just create barrier and they will not be able to seek help from them in
their fight against the sheriff. What Robin needs is to create an
organizational structure that will fit his growing band as it continue to
perform their noble act for the poor.

3. What conceptual framework can help you solve the problem?

To help Robin focus and solve his problem, he needs to have a definite
goal for the band. Here, we will apply the McKinsey’s 7-S framework.

GOAL: How he (Robin) could handle the band to fulfil its mission
for the poor as it grows in number, before the Sheriff will have a
chance to deliver a mortal blow on them?
