Changes in adolescents

(Physical changes, Mental changes, Emotional changes, Social and Spiritual changes)

Physical Changes
Your body grows rapidly during adolescence. Your pituitary gland affects your growth
more than any other gland. This gland produces many kind of hormones and one them
is the GROWTH HORMONE. this hormone regulates the development of long bones and
muscles in the body. The testes produce the males sex hormone which is
TESTOSTERONE while the ovaries produces female sex hormones called ESTROGEN.
These hormones stimulate the many physical changes that adolescence go through
during puberty.

Physical Changes of Female


1. The breasts develop.
2. The hips become wider than the shoulder.
3. Hair grows on the underarm and pubic areas.
4. Menstruation cycle starts.
5. Weight increases due to fat development.

Physical Changes of Male


1. The voice become deeper.
2. The adam’s apple becomes bigger.
3. The shoulder becomes wider than the hips.
4. Hair grows on the face, body, and pubic areas.
5. The skin on the upper arms and the thighs become rough.

Mental Changes
 The adolescents make better decisions because they can evaluate risks
and rewards better.
 Adolescents are already capable of thinking deeply.
 Adolescents students can focus their attention on what they want to
listen to.
 They can also focus their attention to two or more things at the same
time.
 Adolescents are a good debater since they can immediately reason out.

Emotional Changes
 Adolescents are more responsive to rewards and stress.
 Adolescents are more emotional and this makes them open to being hurt
or in danger.
 Adolescents boys are more active than girls.
 Adolescents girls are more self-conscious because of the changes that
are happening to them.

Social Changes
 Adolescents consider seek the approval of friends and other adolescents.
 Adolescents enjoy being with friends, so they stay longer with them after
school.
 They also enjoy choosing clothes to wear.
 Young adolescents choose friends who share the same interest with
them.

Moral-Spiritual Changes
 Adolescents begin to distinguish between rules that are negotiable and
those that are non-negotiable. Non-negotiable rules like smoking are
imposed because they are for their own good.
 Paying respect to our elders is a good behavior.
 They try to find out what to believe in and what to doubt.
