World Champions Brazil travelled to France
with great expectations. Although Carlos
Parreira did not select stars such as Rob-
erto Carlos, Rivaldo or Ronaldo, the South
Americans were still one of the favourites.
They began the tournament with a mixture
of experienced players and young, hopeful
talents.
Dida excelled in goal and instructed
his defence well. Lucio and Juan were the
two central defenders, with support in the
full back positions provided by Kleber and
Belletti. Emerson was the linchpin of the
midfield, constantly trying to inject pace into
the game and bringing Kleberson, Ricardinho
and the other attackers into play. Ronaldinho
gave a solid display, his excellent technique
dazzling on numerous occasions. He formed
the attack with Adriano and Gil.

But the “ball jugglers” simply could not
turn their technical superiority into goals, and
were ultimately punished. They fashioned
excellent openings against Cameroon and
Turkey, but a lack of concentration saw the
chances go begging.
The Brazilians dominated possession
against Cameroon (626 touches of the ball),
but their ultimately unproductive short-pass-
ing game (41%) was not enough to defeat the
“Indomitable Lions”. Although they controlled
play, Brazil only fired eight shots at goal.
In the final group match against Turkey,
the Brazilians drove forward and created 18
excellent chances. Adriano had a wonderful
opportunity to make it 2-0 just before the
break, but he too failed to convert. And when
the Turks introduced Yilmaz, a second striker,
the game turned in Turkey’s favour.
On the international stage, any mistakes,
such as those made by the World Champions,
are ruthlessly exploited.
Les ambitions des champions du monde
n’étaient pas minces à leur arrivée en
France. Bien que Carlos Parreira ait renoncé
à plusieurs vedettes de sa formation comme
Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo ou Ronaldo, les Sud-
Américains faisaient néanmoins figure de
favoris. C’est une équipe composée de vieux
renards et de jeunes loups aux dents longues
qui s’est lancée dans la compétition.
Dida a été un gardien souverain et il a bien
su diriger sa défense. Lucio et Juan veillaient
sur la défense intérieure avec le soutien de
Kleber et de Belletti à l’extérieur. Au centre,
Emerson faisait office de pivot et de lien. Il
s’est toujours employé à accélérer le jeu, et
à lancer Kleberson, Ricardinho et les autres
attaquants. Ronaldinho s’est montré très per-
formant. Il a laissé transparaître sa brillante
technique à plusieurs reprises. Il constituait
l’attaque avec Adriano et Gil.
Mais ces magiciens du ballon ont payé
leur incapacité à utiliser leur supériorité
technique pour conclure. Après s’être créé
de magnifiques occasions aussi bien face
au Cameroun que face à la Turquie, ils les ont
gâchées par manque de concentration.
Face au Cameroun, les Brésiliens ont plus
souvent été en possession du ballon (626
contacts). Mais leur jeu de passes courtes
peu productif (41%) ne leur a pas permis de
vaincre les Lions indomptables. Malgré leur
nette domination sur le terrain, ils n’affichent
pas plus de huit tirs cadrés.
Dans le dernier match de groupes contre
la Turquie, les Brésiliens ont rigoureusement
poussé vers l’avant, se créant 18 occasions de
buts. Peu avant la mi-temps, Adriano a frôlé le
2-0 mais laissé le but lui échapper. Yilmaz a
inscrit le deuxième but, faisant ainsi basculer
le score en faveur de son équipe.
Au niveau international, des négligences
telles que celles que s’est permises le cham-
pion du monde ne pardonnent pas !
El campeón mundial Brasil viajó con enormes
ilusiones a Francia. A pesar de que Carlos
Parreira tuviera que prescindir de astros como
Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo y Ronaldo, la escua-
dra sudamericana era considerada una de las
favoritas, presentándose en el torneo con una
óptima mezcla de jugadores experimentados
y jóvenes esperanzas.
Dida fue un magnífico portero, con gran
capacidad para dirigir a su defensa. Lucio y
Juan formaban la defensa central, apoyados
por Kleber y Belletti en los laterales. Emerson,
punto de pivote en la línea central, intentaba
acelerar constantemente el juego para abrir
posibilidades a Kleberson, Ricardinho y los
demás atacantes. Ronaldinho cumplió una
tarea sobresaliente, sacando frecuentemente
a relucir su extraordinaria técnica. Formó la
falange ofensiva brasileña junto con Adriano.
Sin embargo, la escuadra brasileña no
supo transformar en goles su superioridad
técnica, y esta incapacidad goleadora les
costó la clasificación para la segunda ronda.
Tanto frente a Camerún como frente a Turquía,
la “seleçao” impuso una superioridad arro-
lladora, con magníficas posibilidades de gol
– desperdiciándolas todas.
Contra Camerún, los brasileños domi-
naron claramente el cotejo (¡626 toques de
balón!), pero no fueron capaces de “domar”
a los “leones indomables”, debido a sus
infecundas combinaciones de pases cortos
(41%). Pese a su superioridad numérica en
el campo contrario, únicamente consiguieron
rematar en ocho ocasiones contra la meta
adversaria.
En el último encuentro del grupo contra
Turquía, la escuadra auriverde salió a resolver
desde el primer minuto. Tuvo nada menos que
18 magníficas oportunidades de gol, siendo
la más clara la de Adriano poco antes de la
pausa. Sin embargo, no consiguió marcar el
2 a 0. Cuando los turcos incluyeron a Yilmaz,
un segundo atacante, en el segundo tiempo,
el partido se volcó en su favor.
¡En el ámbito internacional, ni siquiera
un campeón mundial puede darse el lujo de
derrochar tantas oportunidades sin sufrir las
consecuencias!

Erwartungen nach Frankreich. Obwohl Carlos
Parreira auf einige Stars wie Roberto Carlos,
Rivaldo oder Ronaldo verzichtete, zählten die
Südamerikaner dennoch zu den Favoriten. Mit
einer Mischung aus Routiniers und jungen,
hoffnungsvollen Spielern starteten sie ins
Turnier.
Dida war ein souveräner Torhüter und
guter Dirigent seiner Abwehr. Lucio und Juan
bildeten die Innenverteidigung, auf den Aus-
senpositionen unterstützt von Kleber und
Belletti. Im Mittelfeld war Emerson der Dreh-
und Angelpunkt. Immer wieder versuchte er
das Spiel zu beschleunigen, dazu Kleberson,
Ricardinho sowie die anderen Offensivkräfte
zu lancieren. Ronaldinho zeigte eine solide
Leistung. Mehrmals liess er seine glänzende
Technik aufblitzen. Zusammen mit Adriano
und Gil bildete er den Angriff.
Doch weil die Ballzauberer ihre technische
Überlegenheit nicht in Tore umzumünzen ver-
standen, wurden sie bestraft. Sowohl gegen
Kamerun als auch gegen die Türkei hatten sie
sich hervorragende Chancen herausgespielt
– mangels Konzentration vermochten sie
diese jedoch nicht zu nutzen.
Gegen Kamerun waren die Brasilianer
mehrheitlich im Ballbesitz (626 Ballberüh-
rungen!). Doch mit ihrem unproduktiven
Kurzpassspiel (41 %) konnten sie die
“unzähmbaren Löwen” nicht bezwingen. Trotz
grosser Feldüberlegenheit schossen sie nur
gerade achtmal aufs Tor.
Im letzten Gruppenspiel gegen die Türkei
spielten die Brasilianer dann konsequent nach
vorne und erarbeiteten sich 18 Torchancen.
Eine ganz grosse zum 2:0 hatte kurz vor der
Pause Adriano auf dem Fuss, doch er vergab
diese gute Möglichkeit. Und als die Türken mit
Yilmaz einen zweiten Stürmer brachten, dreh-
ten sie das Spiel zu ihren Gunsten.
International werden solche Nachlässig-
keiten, wie sie sich der Weltmeister leistete,
eben ganz brutal bestraft. 81

Cameroon
Cameroon wanted to use this tournament to
banish all memories of their disappointing
showing at the World Cup in Korea/Japan.
Winfried Schäfer’s team began the tourna-
ment with a high-energy display, defeating
World Champions Brazil 1-0.
Goalkeeper Kameni played a crucial role
in that win. The youngest player in the whole
tournament did not concede a goal until the
Final and was named in the FIFA All Star Team.
He is expected to have a sparkling interna-
tional career ahead of him. The two “athletes”
in the centre of defence, Song and Mettomo,
ensured that the defence was virtually
impregnable. In Tchato and Perrier Doumbe,
Cameroon also had two players with excellent
technique and tactical understanding in the
full back positions. They often took it in turns
to push forward when possible.
In the midfield, Mbami provided excellent
cover for the defence. He also constantly tried
to speed the game up. Geremi (right) and Foé
(left) were always looking for a route to goal.
With their pace, they were particularly danger-
ous in counter-attacks. The qualities of Eto’o
are well known. He is lethal in front of goal
and always ready to receive the ball. Idris-
sou improved with each game and began to
develop into the ideal strike partner for Eto’o.
Ndiefi was Cameroon’s wild card, always able
to bring fresh legs to the attack when required.
Job and Atouba gained a place in the team by
performing to a consistently high level.
The tragic death of Marc-Vivien Foé could
not stop Cameroon’s march to the Final,
becoming the first African team to do so.
Cameroon’s young team employed a modern,
simple yet athletic brand of football. The
“Indomitable Lions” continue to represent
African football around the world with great
honour.

Le Cameroun a trouvé en ses « athlètes »
Rigobert Song et Mettomo une défense quasi-
ment invincible. Les postes extérieurs étaient
occupés par Tchato et Perrier Doumbe, tous
deux forts d’une bonne formation technique
et tactique, qui poussaient à tour de rôle vers
l’avant.
Au milieu du terrain, Mbami assurait
souverainement la défense vers l’arrière. Ce
faisant, il s’employait toujours à accélérer le
jeu. Geremi dans le couloir droit et Foé sur la
gauche cherchaient le chemin direct des buts.
En contre-attaque surtout, leur rapidité les
rendait extrêmement dangereux. Les actions
d’Eto’o sont légendaires d’autant qu’il est
très dangereux et toujours libre. Idrissou s’est
amélioré de match en match, devenant de
plus en plus complémentaire d’Eto’o. Ndiefi
a donc investi la fonction de joker, donnant
une nouvelle inspiration à l’attaque lorsque
le besoin s’en faisait sentir. Job et Atouba se
sont taillé leur place dans l’équipe par des
performances constantes.
Même le décès tragique de Marc-Vivien
Foé n’a pas brisé l’envol de l’équipe, premier
représentant de l’Afrique – il faut le souligner
– vers la finale. La jeune équipe du Cameroun
a affiché un football moderne, athlétique et
sans accrocs. Les lions indomptables sont les
dignes représentants du football africain dans
le monde.

bildete Akteure auf den Aussenpositionen,
die abwechslungsweise immer wieder nach
vorne preschten.
Im Mittelfeld sicherte Mbami souverän
nach hinten ab. Dazu versuchte er, immer
wieder das Spiel schnell zu machen. Geremi
auf der rechten Seite und Foé auf der linken
suchten den direkten Weg zum Tor. Insbe-
sondere bei Gegenangriffen waren sie mit
ihrer Schnelligkeit enorm gefährlich. Eto’os
Antritte sind legendär. Zudem ist er sehr
torgefährlich und immer anspielbar. Idrissou
steigerte sich von Spiel zu Spiel und wurde
immer mehr zum idealen Partner Eto’os.
Ndiefi blieb somit die Jokerrolle, in der er

The South American Champions also had
great hopes for the tournament in France.
Coach Francisco Maturana was able to call
upon the dependable goalkeeper Óscar Cór-
doba.
The defence, marshalled by central
defenders Yepes and Iván Córdoba, linked
well together, with the two centre backs
always in the opposition penalty area for
set pieces. Gonzalo Martínez supported the
defence on the right flank, and took it in turns
with Bedoya (left) to boost the attack.
In the midfield, Velazquez (Diaz) and
López (Valentierra) shielded the attacking
talents of Hernández and Patiño. The latter
two players excelled in terms of technique,
tactics and athleticism. The Technical Study
Group also named Hernández in the All Star
Team.
Aristizábal and Becerra tried to create
opportunities up front, but Aristizábal cut a
forlorn figure and squandered a number of
chances. Arriaga, a magician with the ball at
88 his feet, often displayed his undoubted class
and pace, and kept the ball under control in
even the tightest of areas.
The South Americans relied upon a short-
passing game that is seldom seen in Europe.
These wonderful footballers find it easy to use
the short-passing game, even when under pres-
sure or pushed for time. The South Americans
excelled in terms of technique and tactics, and
also surprised the watching football world with
their extraordinary athleticism. In each of their
matches, they managed to grind down their
opponents by continuously closing them down.

Jacques Santini assumed control of the French
team in the wake of the disappointing show-
ing at the World Cup in Korea/Japan. In the
group matches, he used all of his players in an
attempt to build for the future. Of all the teams
in the tournament, only France used all three
goalkeepers during the course of the event.
The team experimented with a number
of variations and alternatives, giving the
coaching team ideas for the future. In central
defence, Desailly and Mexès linked well, as
did Desailly and Gallas. On the left flank,
Silvestre complemented Lizarazu perfectly,
while Thuram was a constant presence on the
right wing. In central midfield, Pedretti played
a pivotal role and received good support from
Dacourt. On the right wing, Wiltord always
impressed and his performances vindicated
his selection. Giuly, often a substitute, con-
stantly pressed for a goal. Pires showed his
class on the left side and was replaced by
Kapo when the French were forced to play
more defensively towards the end of matches.

France excelled in attack with their world-
class strikers such as Henry, now a firm crowd
favourite. Both Govou and Cissé battled gal-
lantly and showed that they are en route to the
elite levels of international football.
Jacques Santini and his coaching team
also worked tremendously hard. The French
team employs a modern brand of attacking
football that is built upon a solid defence.

du Monde Corée/Japon. Il a changé tous les
joueurs titulaires durant les matches de grou-
pes, essayant de trouver ainsi de nouvelles
solutions pour l’avenir. Les Français ont été
les seuls à utiliser leurs trois gardiens de but,
toutes les autres équipes ayant adopté une
autre stratégie.
Diverses variantes et alternatives ont
été testées, apportant les enseignements
suivants aux techniciens. Aussi bien Desailly
et Mexès que Desailly et Gallas forment une
défense intérieure harmonieuse. Sur l’ex-
térieur gauche, Silvestre était parfaitement
complémentaire de Lizarazu. Thuram est resté
sur le flanc droit. Au centre du terrain, où il
a bénéficié du soutien de Dacourt, Pedretti
a joué un rôle majeur. A droite au milieu du
terrain, Wiltord était une valeur sûre et il a
confirmé sa nomination tandis que Giuly,
remplaçant, s’approchait des cages avec
beaucoup d’entrain. Pires a laissé toute sa
virtuosité s’exprimer sur la gauche avant de
laisser la place à Kapo, lorsque les Français
se voyaient obligés d’adopter une tactique

Jacques Santini et ses techniciens ont

Japan
Following the World Cup in Korea/Japan, Bra-
zilian legend Zico took control of the Japanese
team and made changes in a number of posi-
tions. The team oozed self-confidence, which
showed in their play: a clear 4-4-2 system,
using zonal marking in defence with the man
in possession quickly closed down.
Zico also performed a masterstroke by
turning striker Santos into a defender. In the
midfield, Japan deployed two defensive play-
ers (Inamoto and Endo), while the offensive
trio of Nakata, Ogasawara and especially
Nakamura were virtually unstoppable. Naka-
mura was the playmaker and the FIFA Techni-
cal Study Group selected him for the All Star
Team. Okubo, a player with a bagful of tricks,
and the powerful striker Takahara worked
together perfectly. Both players have great
96 futures ahead of them.
But the Japanese appeared to be jaded
during their third, and crucial, game against
Colombia. They were caught cold by their
opponents and eliminated from the tourna-
ment. But Zico’s charges had, in a way, con-
tributed to their own downfall. While the team
played well in the matches against France and
Colombia, they also made serious errors at
the back and gave away unnecessary fouls.
Such errors are ruthlessly exploited in inter-
national football.
Having said that, the presence of the Japa-
nese was a bonus for the Confederations Cup.
Their enchanting brand of combination play
certainly enraptured the spectators.

rablement complétés. Tous deux sont promis
à un bel avenir.
Lors du troisième match, décisif, contre
la Colombie, les Japonais ont manqué de
fraîcheur mentale. Ils se sont fait dominer
sans réagir et sont sortis de la compétition.
Mais les protégés de Zico ont été les propres
artisans de leur défaite. Face à la France et
à la Colombie, ils ont très bien joué mais se
sont permis quelques mauvaises passes et
des fautes inutiles qui ne pardonnent pas au
niveau international.
Cela étant, les Japonais ont illuminé la
Coupe des Confédérations : leur football
attrayant fondé sur les enchaînements a
séduit le public français.

deckung und konsequentem Attackieren des

Die Umwandlung des Stürmers Santos
zum Verteidiger war ein geschickter Schach-
zug von Zico. Im Mittelfeld agierten die Japa-
ner mit zwei defensiven Spielern (Inamoto
und Endo), während das Offensiv-Dreieck mit
Nakata, Ogasawara und vor allem Nakamura
nicht zu halten war. Nakamura war der Spiel-
gestalter und wurde von der technischen Stu-
diengruppe der FIFA ins All-Star-Team berufen.
Okubo, der kleine Wirbelwind, und Sturmtank
Takahara ergänzten sich hervorragend. Beide
sind ein Versprechen für die Zukunft.
Im dritten und entscheidenden Spiel
gegen Kolumbien fehlte den Japanern dann
die “geistige Frische”. Eiskalt liessen sie
sich erwischen und schieden aus. Eigentlich
hatten sich Zicos Schützlinge aber selber
bezwungen. Gegen Frankreich und Kolum-
bien spielten sie sehr gut, leisteten sich aber
einige gravierende Abspielfehler und unnö-
tige Fouls. Auf internationaler Bühne werden
solche Fehler sofort bestraft.
Dennoch: Die Japaner waren ein Gewinn
für den Konföderationen-Pokal. Mit ihrem
attraktiven Kombinationsfussball begeister-

This was New Zealand’s second appearance
at the Confederations Cup and the team
travelled to France via the USA and Scotland.
Coach Mick Waitt wanted a positive start in the
opening match against Japan, but Zico’s team
was stronger than the Kiwis and won 3-0. New
Zealand’s confidence suffered as a result.
De Gregorio scored a wonderful goal
against Colombia, and the whole team played
wonderful football for an hour. The Kiwis tried
to launch quick counter-attacks from their
compact defence. But in the closing stages of
the match, they were again caught cold, and
their powers soon waned. Finally, they were
clearly outclassed by European Champions
France, with the team enduring a torrid time.
Tactically, New Zealand employed a
4-4-2 formation, with each player assigned a
pre-defined role. In central defence, captain
Zoricich and Nelsen combined well and con-
stantly tried to support their team-mates. In
midfield, Elliott tried to dictate play. Elliott
and Burton hoped that their technique would
shine through, but Burton and Killen did not
receive enough support to enable them to
reach their goals.
So, despite all of their efforts, the New
Zealanders still await their first victory in the
Confederations Cup.

milieu du terrain, Elliott s’est toujours efforcé

niquement avec Burton. Mais par manque de
soutien, Burton et Killen n’ont pu concrétiser
leurs efforts.
Malgré leurs bonnes résolutions, les Néo-
Zélandais devront donc patienter encore un
peu avant de remporter leur première victoire
en Coupe des Confédérations.

After a wonderful showing at the World Cup
in Korea/Japan, coach Senol Gunes wanted to
introduce some hopeful young players to the
squad. In France, the Turks used a refreshing
brand of technical, tactical attacking football.
In Rustu Recber, the Turks had a goal-
keeper of great international experience.
He was replaced after an injury by Catkic.
They used a four-man defence, marshalled
by Alpay, who was ably supported by the
strong-willed, experienced Bülent Korkmaz.
Depending on the situation and the opposi-
tion, either Penbe or Uzulmez closed down
the space on the left flank. The defenders only
encountered problems when they were not
compact or when they were surprised after
losing the ball.
Sahin Selcuk was the focal point of the
Turkish team. He either slowed down the pace
of the game or used intelligent balls to acceler-
ate play. On the right wing, Karadeniz, another
young player, gave solid performances, scor-
ing two highly impressive goals. Arslan or
Bastürk were forever trying to exploit space
and fashion an opportunity to shoot at goal.
But the major Turkish discovery was Tuncay
Sanli. A promising, powerful striker, Tuncay
Sanli’s pace, predatory instinct and extraor-
dinary energy levels impressed all observers.
Together with Yilmaz, he formed a dangerous
and unpredictable strike partnership.
During matches, Senol Gunes often gave
tactical instructions to his players, who imme-
diately implemented his ideas. Turkey have

The USA used a 4-4-1-1 formation that could
be transformed into a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 in the
closing stages of matches. Coach Bruce Arena
often changed his team line-up in an attempt
to find the perfect combination.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard excelled in terms
of instructing and organising his defence.
Arena fielded many different players in both
defence and the midfield, without changing
his tactical masterplan. The US team used
zonal marking and tried to apply pressure
to their opponents immediately. Each and
every player had defensive duties to perform.

However, this tactical plan allowed the techni-
cally superior teams room to exploit the extra
space behind. To provide extra support for
the strikers, the midfield was often bypassed
quickly. This tactic requires athletes in peak
condition, and players with excellent tactical
understanding. When attacking, the US pre-
ferred to launch rapid counter-attacks using
two or three men. Donovan and Beasley were
the players asked to launch these attacks
– mainly via the left hand side.
The future looks good for the Americans,
as they will be able to call upon players such
as Donovan, Beasley, Martino and Gibbs. For
Bruce Arena and his coaching team, this tour-
nament was not only a pointer for the future,
but also an opportunity to blood young, tal-
ented players.

juego de ataque con veloces contragolpes,
tocando y devolviendo balones. Donovan y
Beasley estaban predestinados para este tipo
de incursiones, particularmente por la banda

fer zu unterstützen. Diese Taktik verlangt von
den Spielern eine ausgezeichnete Kondition
und grosses taktisches Verständnis. In
der Offensive bevorzugten die Amerikaner
schnelle Gegenangriffe über zwei, drei Stati-
onen. Donovan und Beasley waren prädesti-
niert, solche Angriffe – insbesondere über die
linke Seite – auszulösen.
In Zukunft können die Amerikaner sicher
auf Talente wie Donovan, Beasley, Martino
und Gibbs zählen. Für Bruce Arena und seine
Techniker war dieses Turnier wegweisend und
gleichzeitig eine Chance, junge, talentierte
