Environment for learning

Learning environment is the condition or situation in which students learn. The teaching learning
process cannot take place in a vacuum. It is the classroom which provides the learning
environment for students. Learning environment consists of physical component and
psychosocial environment.

Physical components of learning environments:


1. Space 5. Noise
2. Lightening 6. Cleanliness
3. Furniture 7. Attractive display
4. Ventilation 8. Technology

Space
There must be adequate space for moving around comfortably. Student scan interact with each
other and teacher easily.

Lightening
Classroom should be well lighted. Board view should be clear. Board view should be suitable for
classroom activities.

Furniture
Desks should be arranged in order. Teacher should have direct interaction with each and every
student. For group activities desks may be arranged in groups. The furniture must be comfortable
for longtime use.

Attractive Display
Class must be decorated with appealing bulletins, notice boards, hangings and charts. The walls
must be of fresh colors for making students feel active.

Ventilation
There must be enough fans and they must function properly. Classroom should have airy
windows for proper ventilation.

Noise
Noise should be absent to enhance learning. Silence makes environment effective for learning.

Technology
Use of multimedia facilitates teaching-learning process. Save times and make lectures more
engaging.

Cleanliness
Classroom should be neat and clean. Resources should be properly arranged.

Psychosocial environment
It involves teacher-student interaction and student-student interaction. It consists of:
1. Diversity
2. Expectation
3. Rules and regulations
4. Behavior of teacher
5. Discussion
6. Activities

Diversity
Teacher should recognize the individual differences and capabilities of all students.

Expectation
Teacher should expect high from all students. Teacher knows the potential of each student and
treats them on their level.

Rules and regulations


Rules should be clear to make discipline and facilitate teaching-learning process.

Behavior of teacher
Teacher should encourage, inspire, and motivate students. Verbal and non-verbal skills of
teacher should be excellent for engaging for students in learning. Students should not feel
reluctant to ask questions or participate in class discussions.

Discussion
Teacher should be friendly to answer the questions of students.

Activities
Activities must be promoted for creating interaction in students.

Conclusion
Physical aspects and human aspects contribute to conducive and effective environment for
learning. An effective environment leads to good academic achievements.
