ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Before anything else, we would like to bow our head before the Almighty God who
is with us in our every endeavor. Through Him and with Him, our life have been filled with
His grace and blessings. He brought us to success in every activity, not just with the
fulfillment of it but also with the lessons and experiences that we have gathered. In our
strong faith, we do believe that He will guide us to more challenges to come and help us
overcome the trials of our every day dealings in life.

To the people who shows us no greater love and care thas any other in this world,
our beloved parents and family, there is no word that could deeply express our heartfelt
thanks. It is you who tapped our shoulders every morning and embrace our hearts
everytime we felt weak and lonely. It is you who is behind the support in all aspects of our
life, financial, morale, etc. Thank you very much for your very existence in our life since
we’re little boys and girls and as we grow old as fine ladies and gentlemen.

To our teachers, especially to Mr. Arnold S. Carbon, our very own R.E 111 teacher,
we want to extend our deepest sense of gratitude for imparting us the knowledge, wisdom
and values that we need to survive in the world of work industry. Your efforts and
sacrifices as our mentors will forever be appreciated from the bottom of our hearts and
will be reflected as to becoming the men and women you mold us to be in the future. It is
thanks to you that we have the opportunity to experience this Tree Planting Activity in our
community as part of the R.E Integration Activity. Also, thank you for strengthening our
faith in God by letting us realize and reflect with our beliefs, correcting our misconceptions
and introducing us to things that let us be amazed and wonder about the true meaning of
the Bible.

To our classmates, friends and more importantly to our groupmates, words aren’t
enough to show how grateful we are to have you around. The bond that we share together
as this semester gone by leads us to a happy, joyful and glowing friendship that would
further push our productivity in every endeavor that we are engaging. Thank you for all of
your efforts and trusts with each other especially in making this portfolio. I hope that we
could finish this semester worthwhile and satisfactory.

Once again, thank you very much and God bless us all!

I hope we are all having a nice day 

INTRODUCTION
Religious Education subject molds us in understanding of religion, religious
beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influence on individuals,
communities, societies and cultures. It also enables the students to consider and
respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development
which matters to the values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the
meaning and purpose of life wherein it is an essential component of a broad and
balanced education and concerned with the deep meaning that individuals and groups
make of their experiences and how this helps them give purpose to their lives. Thus,
it provides opportunities to explore, make and respond to the meanings of those
experiences in relation to the beliefs and experiences of others as well as to one's
own experiences.

The Notre Dame of Dadiangas University has objectively set a schedule for the
Community Integration: Planting Mangrove Trees. The activity was held last
September 14 which we had a wonderful connection with the creation of God. During
our RE Integration, we planted mangroves at Barangay Bula, Zone 6. With our tiny
steps towards a greener future, it will be a big change not only today but as we go
forth. It is also the day where we were able to build friendship and developed
appreciation and love to our environment. Having this kind of activity, as dameans we
got a chance to practice the core value Integrity of Creation wich entails showing
respect for human life. It is also to propagate seedlings and to plant trees as stewards
of the environment.

As students and as stewards of God’s creation, we are blessed enough to be

able to study in a school that offers Religious Education subject. Through this subject
offered by the school, we were given an opportunity to contribute help restore our
planet. It enables us to give hope for future generations that they will still have a
beautiful earth to live in. Although the integration lasted only for a couple of hours, but,
the memories we had and the reason why we participated in the mangrove planting
activity will always be in our hearts. The planting process may not took long, but the
fruit of our labor will remain until the next generations to come.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INTEGRATION

RATIONALE

Religious Education is an academic and systematic subject, in so far as it is

legitimate discipline taught in the school and is ordered toward a broader goal of integral
education. Essentially, Religious Education is Catechesis in school setting and it is
serving the goal of Catechesis, that is, “to bring people not only in tough but in
communion, in intimacy with the person of Jesus Christ”.
The thrust of NDDU is making Religious Education as the Core of the Curriculum.
Essentially, it means the bringing about of the integration of Faith and Life, the synthesis
of Faith and Culture.
In the hope to make Religious Education a potent means of evangelization to the
young people of today and to strengthen the thrust of NDDU, R.E. needs to provide our
students with more opportunities supplement their learning experience in the classroom
– opportunities for practical application of their study in actual life in the context of a
Christian community. Hence, a program is designed for this purpose. It is called
integration. This program will engage the students in an actual integration of the Gospel
message and life praxis and develop them as evangelizers in the Church. To quote Art.
650 of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines, “the greatest resource of the Church
for evangelization are the young people of the Philippines”.
The following are the Religious Education subjects and their corresponding
Integration:
R.E. 111 – Promotion of Integrity of Creation
R.E. 112 – Proclamation of the Good News
R.E. 113 – Integration with the Poor
R.E. 114 – Participation in the Life and Mission of the Local Church
R.E. 115 – Immersion in the Liturgical and Sacramental Life in the Parish
R.E. 116 – Human Promotion
R.E. 30 – Integration in the Worship Service/ Jumaat of the Local Churches /
Masjid
R.E. 40 – Integration to the Church / Masjid Ministries

R.E 111 Community Integration Program

Religious Education (R.E) is an essential component of a broad and balanced

education. It develops understanding, strengthen faith and deepens connection with
God and religion. It helps nourish and nurture the spiritual self of a student so that he
will be guided to the path of enlightenment and salvation. This subject also let us
reflect in our attitude and morale, connection to the nature as stewards of the
environment and approaches in dealing with the challenges and blessings of life. It
develops our understanding and embodiment of the different values in life especially
the core values taught to us by the school. Holistically, it helps us grow as a person
with good moral attitudes and strong faith in the Almighty.

R.E 111 Community Integration Program enables us students to connect to the

environment and be aware of the benefits of a healthy mother nature and the
disavantages of a devastated one. The activity conducted during this program was
the tree planting of mangroves in the coastal area of Brgy. Bula, General Santos City,
our very own community. This activity is specifically under one of the NDDU core
values, the integrity of creation. The actual participation in this activity gives us not
just the experience but also the awareness of the importance of the mangroves in our
coastal areas.

Mangroves are our primary and natural source of coastal defense. It is our first
line of defense for coastal communities because it stabilizes the shorelines by slowing
erosion and providing natural barriers that protects us from heavy and increased storm

23 | P a g e
surges, floods and hurricanes. Also, mangrove tree planting activities also alleviates
our problem in terms of the global warming and climate change. It can also give us
shade and a good source of oxygen that we breathe everyday.

The above-mentioned statements are my realizations as this semester gone by

and as we have participated in the said program. Engaging in community-based
activities like this helps me reflect that helping restore and aid our mother nature is
not easy but it is a fulfillment in our part as humans that we are not just keep leaving
carbon footprints that slowly destroying her, we made a step that would help us as we
grow. The activity that have been done last September 14, 2019 may be just a small
step towards a good future but it can be a start that would further result to good ones,
a big leap for humanity.

We must not keep a blind eye on what happening now in our society. We must
start moving and making change. What’s done is done and it is enough already, all
we have to do left is face it and solve it. Our environment is slowly depleting and is
almost depleted with its natural resource and will not be able to defend us against
calamities and disasters that would hunt us sooner or later. If not now, then when? If
not here, then where? Start making a change!

Religious education is the “core of the core in a curriculum” in a Catholic school.

As a Catholic school, Notre Dame of Dadiangas University places RE at the core of the
curriculum which helps the school to fulfill its mission to educate the whole person in
discerning the meaning of their existence, since RE is concerned not only with intellectual
knowledge but also includes emotional and affective learning. Furthermore, RE is an
essential element of the formation and personal development of the students. Students
are obliged to take RE subjects to be able to graduate. The RE subject lets the students
to develop their spirituality and values formation. Part of its activities are off campus to
help the community where the school belongs.

This years’ RE 111 promotes the Integrity of Creation which is about showing
respect and giving attention to all living matters created by God for the purpose of
preserving and protecting it for the future generations. It is a kind of calling to us, the
highest creation of God to do our duty as a steward of His creation. We as children of
God who created all we see and know, are called to care for this creation. To be good
stewards who promote well-being for all of God’s creatures. It is a call to live in balance
and harmony, a call to live with awareness and sensitivity, a call to speak and act out in
favor of the protection of God’s creation. Since we only have one planet to live on, we
need to start to invest in the environment and save it for all of our future generations to
come.

Last September 14, 2019, our class was assigned to plant mangrove seedlings in
Bula Zone VI, Sto. Nino Parish, General Santos City. The class is divided into groups to
be able to plant more trees effectively. Each student is obliged to plant two seedlings.
25 | P a g e
This activity is one of the requirement for the subject. To be able to plant effectively, each
member of the group should cooperate and help each other to do the assigned tasks
faster.

During my experience of planting trees, I felt relieved because I have done

something to help the environment that I am living in. the environment provide everything
that we need to survive yet we are taking more than what we are supposed to consume
because people just can’t be contented of what they own. But, we can still change. There
is still time to reflect and start doing the things that we are supposed to do.

Ever since I was young I really wanted to contribute help save our Mother Earth. It
is because I noticed how our planet have changed over the past years, and above all, I
love our nature and the animals living in it. Way back during my Junior High School years,
I have joined organizations like Earth Savers Club, and Solid Waste and Electricity
Management (SWEM) organization in my former school, in which I have experienced a
clean-up drive and tree planting activities. It is not every day that I get the chance to
participate in an eco-friendly activity because sometimes I don’t have access to
organizations that help our planet and sometimes I don’t have free time to attend those
activities. But, I am very fortunate to have a RE integration wherein we are tasked to have
a Mangrove Planting last 14th of September 2019 at Bula Sto. Nino, Zone 6, General
Santos City. Together with my friends and classmates, we planted mangrove and
contributed a little help for our mother earth and for the future generations.

The Mangrove Planting activity was a success. During the whole duration of our
activity, God granted us a fine weather so that we can all perform our tasks well. I enjoyed
our integration because it was my first time to participate in a mangrove planting activity
and to be at Bula. I can finally crossed out Mangrove Planting off my bucket list. My
groupmates makes the activity even more fun. We talk and throw jokes while we are
planting. It is one of the best way to take a break from all of our academic stress and be
able to relax while contributing to our planet. However, we didn’t just enjoy our integration,
we also developed cooperation and teamwork as a group. We finished planting 20
mangroves within a small amount of time only. It is because we all helped each other
especially in digging the soil because we lack of digging materials. Cooperation and unity

27 | P a g e
is what makes a task successful. For us, while we are performing the task we have one
goal in mind and it is to help save our planet and to make a difference. Despite the
circumstances we faced during the activity, such as the hazardous objects scattered
along the way, the muddy state of the soil and the lack of water supply for cleaning we
still performed our task well. This difference we have made can help give hope for future
generations and a healthy environment for them to live in.

We, humans, are powerful beings. But, we must not use our power to destroy our
planet and our future. Instead, we must use this power and authority to protect our
resources and fulfill our duty as stewards of God’s creation. We must practice the values
of Integrity of Creation and Family Spirit, and reflect on the life we are making for the
future generations. We should also observe the values of Presence and Participation and
grab every opportunity we can to help save our Mother Earth. We must not make it
happen that the future generations would go to a museum just to see a single tree. We
must act now, a small difference we make for our planet right now can be a big help for
the future generations. All we need is Perseverance and Gratitude. Because it will take a
lot of patience before we get to see the fruits of our labor, but great things do take time.

To start with, I was not expecting the destination to be that far. But still, the travel,
the time, sweat, and effort, all was worth it. I was not expecting that the place is very
beautiful. I have lived long in the city, it was the time that I was able to see the green
trees, the sea, fresh air, birds humming, and to be able to hear the nature’s water flowing.
Indeed it was the best! The true nature is where you could find a place where you could
unwind and relax, and that is the place. Well, it was my first time to be able to witness,
and experience planting a tree and I never felt more proud of myself. Proud, in a way that
I was able to help our mother earth with just a simple act, just by planting trees.
There’s a lot of things that I have learned, but these are the most important points
that I could never forget. While we were walking towards the location where we would
plant the mangroves, I saw a lot of trash on the shore. It saddened me because I knew
that those trash came from us, people. And there it hit me, what we are about to do that
day was really important to our mother earth and especially to us people. Also, I realized
how the core value Integrity of creation is really important, as damean I am proud to say
that our school really practice what we preach. I say, that we should do more of these
kinds of activities because our mother earth badly needs it, she needs our help, she needs
to restore for the future generations.
As a Roman Catholic, I have much to learn. I am still young, but I am thankful that I
was able to help our environment and save the wonderful creations of God.
Always remember, we should take care of the home that God has given to us, we should
love it and take care of it, before it’s too late. To sum it up, I am very thankful that I was
able to experience that kind of journey, I was able to share, and to learn more. RE:111
integration is the best experience I had with regards to religion. For now.

Trees give life. It is a vital part of our planet wherein it provides oxygen for all the
living bodies on earth. As we all know our planet had gone through much, such as soil
erosion, air pollution, and water pollution. What if one day we will lose our home? What
would happen to us and to the other living organisms? How does life cycle will continue?
Those are some of my realization while doing the RE 111 Integration as part of the
academic activity under our Religious Education that has the intention to preserve our
natural resources.

Mangrove trees are everywhere, but lately I have realized the purpose of planting
it. Our country is prone to typhoons, wherein it causes massive casualties. Thousands of
people are being affected just like what Typhoon Yolanda brought to people in Tacloban.
As it was also being reported here in our localities that there are some areas in General
Santos City that are affected of the deformation of our coastal areas. Mangroves in a
large scale helps to save our shorelines, with their thick roots and strong trunks and
branches it saves people, in a way that it prevents to cause coastal erosion, wherein it
also tend to create sink holes which is very scary for some reason. The place where we
plant is very abundant when it comes to mangroves. Wherein it is just a perfect place to
plant trees to save our shorelines.

Overall my experience on doing this activity was very fun and exciting because it
is my first time in my whole life to plant mangroves. We had given the chance to contribute
something in our community, and I am extremely proud of it, it may be small but I know
that it would be a big help for the majority. As we continue to live on earth we should
minimize those negative impacts that have been brought to our planet in order to ensure
the availability of our natural resources. We have our choice, but we choose to live an
abundant and healthy life. That is why as early as now we should be reflective of our own
future and the future generations it may leads.

Religious Education aims to provide opportunities for all students to learn and to
achieve something. It is also to promote students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural
development and to prepare all students for the opportunities, responsibilities and
experiences of the present and the future.

In Genesis the first humans are given responsibility to care for creation. But despite
of this, it hasn’t always been a strong theme of Christians thinking over the last 2000
years. Care for creation is even a latecomer to Catholic Social Teaching. Now the world’s
resources grow scarcer, caring responsibly for creation is being considered more of a
way to ensure respect for human dignity and peace than an end in itself.

Just being around trees makes us feel good. It had numerous social benefits which
embraces the beauty of nature, helps clean the environment from the moment of planting
forward, and sets one’s mind on the well-being of future generations.

While walking to the place that we where about to plant a Mangrove, there were
many trashes especially plastics we're still there and how muddy it was that time. But still
life must go on. And so do we. We continued walking. Till we reached the assigned area
where Mangrove must be planted. It was my first time planting a Mangrove and like any
other trees, it needs a lot of care in order to grow. It does have a process in planting it like
it must aligned with a bamboo stick tied on it and the plastic bag should be removed upon
reaching to the bottom part where you wished to plant the mangrove. It feels good when
we have done since we know that planting would help a lot to the people residing near
the bay. And also, the great thing is that, we, as human can play a vital role in planting
trees to help offset deforestation and urbanization.

32 | P a g e
As a person who lived in a modern technology age, which has given us a huge
amount of benefits that had helped us alleviate suffering and create new methods of
solidarity among people. At the same time, we can also see how it has made it easier for
us to become alienated from our environment, and it's given new and efficient ways to
plunder the world's natural resources as a whole. Care for Creation ensures that we don’t
neglect, but protect and respect the gift that God given to us, our natural environment.
Therefore, there is no doubt that if you plant trees in your community, people will see and
feel the difference. It has also made me aware that we need to take more care of our
environment in order for us to have a better future. It also made me realized that just a
little help from a lot of people can make a big difference. I hoped that the trees will grow,
stay still and become healthy.

RE 111 is a specialized subject for all the first year student of Notre Dame of
Dadiangas University. RE stands for Religious Education. It can help students to be more
responsible and to be a good role model to everyone especially to kids. RE helps us to
strengthen our Faith in God. It helps to develop the knowledge of the students in terms of
religion, religion beliefs, cultures, practices, languages and traditions. To understand what
is religion is. It helps to determine what is right and wrong in terms of decision making.
RE taught in a christian school, and this makes us different to the other school. It helps
to promotes cooperation, teamwork and unity. It helps the student to follow the core
values of NDDU and to be a good role model to inspire others.

RE 111 Integration is the action or process of restoring elements regarded as

disparate to unity. RE 111 Integration is memorable for me because I enjoyed it. As a
student of NDDU, I am happy to help our environment even in small things. We plant
mangrove trees. Each of us has a two mangrove tree to plant. My group mates and I are
very happy and overwhelmed to have this opportunity to help our environment despite it
was so hot and tiring. I am glad that I planted a mangrove trees because not all people
can have this opportunity to help. We rode a jeep from NDDU to Bula and vice versa and
all of us was happy. All of us want to help our environment. The most important thing in
RE 111 Integration is to ENJOY.

Therefore RE help us to develop ourselves. It helps us to become more

responsible. Religious Education is concerned with the deep meaning of individuals and
groups to make their experiences. RE helps us to strengthen our Faith in God. It helps us
to respect and to love others. It helps us to know what is good and bad. It helps to

38 | P a g e
understand other cultures, traditions, practices, religious beliefs and others need to be
taught. To help us encourage what is our purpose here on earth. It helps us to know more
ourselves. RE 111 Integration helps us to cooperate and have unity. It helps us to give
importance about our environment. It helps us to be a good role model. It helps us to
value everything. It helps us to improve our understanding to the things we didn’t know
yet.
