Catalog Description:
North Star (Basic/Low Intermediate Level) forms the core of this course. This
course is for learners of English as a Foreign Language. It uses integrated skills approach
which is divided into Listening and Speaking module and Reading and Writing
component. New structures are presented in a range of life like contexts. The resources
used are close to authentic materials and are diverse in nature.

Course Objectives:
After completing the course the learners are expected to have grasped form,
meaning and pronunciation of the contents contained in it. They will be able to expand
and reinforce the grammatical structures in meaningful context. They will be able to
expand and consolidate techniques of manipulating diverse materials learned in first
semester. They will have enhanced linguistic competence to deal with more complex
functions of language such as, organizing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from
listening. They will be able to correlate, compare and contrast readings. They will be able
to write coherent and correct paragraphs to express opinions and to give arguments.

Books’ Description:
The course is comprised of three student books; one each for Reading &Writing, Listening
& Speaking and Writing Activity Book. The books are written around the principles of
making meaning clear, integration of grammar with vocabulary building, active learning,
feedback on achievement level of students, and genuine interaction. The topics through
which the students are exposed to new language are fairly up-to-date and of general
interest for learners. Each unit is divided into four parts: Focus on the Topic, Focus on
Reading/listening, Focus on Vocabulary and Focus on Writing/Speaking. Both the strands
i.e. Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking are written about one theme which makes it
easy for the learners to remain focused on target language. They can get fairly thorough
practice which is essential for retention and understanding of language.

Supplementary Material for Science Students:


Science students will be taught supplementary material. The material is to be used
as a link between general English and technical material. Grammatical, lexical and
scientific writing elements are to be carefully interwoven to take students smoothly
through the transition from elementary school level to the advanced academic
pursuits.

Examinations:
There will be two midterm quizzes, one end term examination, two writing quizzes and
two oral presentations.

Examination Procedure:
 Apart from writing quizzes and oral presentations, students will take examination
comprising of multiple choice questions MCQs. They will be given four choices
for each test item.
 Students will be required to choose the best answer and encircle it.
 Students will not be allowed to bring edibles to the examination room.
 Students will be required to switch off their mobile phones before entering the
examination room.
 Cheating or attempt to cheat or misbehavior will be dealt with severely and such
cases will be sent to College Council for disciplinary action.
