Modern Educational System is Hindering Student’s Capabilities

Topic: Modern Educational System

Country: Philippines
School: Compostela Science and Technology High School

The system of today’s education impacts the students, less on positive effects and more on
negative effects. Students may have many learnings from the books, but they probably won’t
develop their skills and capabilities since they are just sticking to a certain guide to be followed.
The success of the students is measured in terms of what “I” achieved, wherein he/she will learn
to recognize his/her achievements that he/she has done by himself/herself, rather than what “We”
are up to, wherein everyone is opening up their ideas to generate some creative sense to attain
success in their group. Students were negatively affected by the modern education and created a
great impact on the moral, knowledge, and social responsibility.

Marks and ranks are really big deal in the school today. It seems like it is amust to win the
highest reward in every field of education, if not, you’re a loser. By that, students will think that
what really matters in school is the personal achievements. Furthermore, the process in learning of
students were often ignored because what really matters are the results in the end. Because of
competitiveness, students start copying contents from other sources, won’t share notes with others,
become selfish, and jealous.

There is a great negative psychological impact being made in every student, when parents,
teachers, and friends all look only at the scores in their report cards, and are not interested in their
actual understanding and knowledge about the lesson. Thus, the student will have a fixed mindset
to just study and read books under the lampshade in order to earn more knowledge which may the
student doesn’t like to do. By this, the students only have the knowledge of what is inside the
books, which results to a waste of talent. What we need to understand is that, human is meant to
understand, human is not a computer that needs to remember everything. Only fools become tools
of their tools. There are so many knowledges outside the book that are very useful than what is
inside the book. In addition, it is more enjoyable and fun if the students will experience the reality
of life wherein the students can get very useful understanding. The more you enjoy, the easier you
learn, the greater of chance of understanding, and the greater of depth of knowledge.

Ironically speaking, why is it that some of the highly educated individuals will just
underestimate the capabilities of the uneducated individuals? There are companies that will look
not the experience, skills, and capabilities, but they will look at the educational attainment of the
employee. There are some individuals, who didn’t finish school due to some particular reasons,
who are more skillful and talented than those who really finished college. A sense of social
responsibility and a thought process of thinking about the welfare of the society, and directing
one’s actions towards the social good will develop making the students social centered.

Sticking to the fixed curriculum of today’s educational system might create workers that
will just follow the steps in the manual, workers that will just stick to the fixed plan without any
improvements, and workers that doesn’t have trust in their co-workers. These negative effects of
current Modern Educational System can be turned to positive if the sectors of education will
generate a curriculum that will let the students develop more of their skills and talents, focusing
not on the short-term effect of education to the students which is the temporary happiness because
of the many merits attained by the students, but to the long-term effect of education which is the
understanding from the relatable experiences that can be brought up to the real workplace of the
future workers.
