EVERYONE IS TALKING IN A NEW LANGUAGE : ‘GREEN’

Green Building vs. conventional Building

 Externally : both look alike

 Building Use : both are same
 Differences
o Concern for human comfort & indoor environment
o Operational savings
What is a “Green Building”?
 “Whole Building” concept.
 Building designed to use more sustainable and
renewable methods and materials.
 Improved energy efficiency
 Minimize waste material
 Conservation of resources
 Creating a “healthy” building environment
Tangible Benefits

● Reduce operating costs

● Optimize life cycle economic performance
● Sustained savings

LEED 2.0 Certified Gold Ebensburg. PA

● Energy savings: 40-50%

● Water savings: 20-30%
● Reduction in initial investment
Intangible Benefits of Green Design

Environmental benefits
Reduce impact on the environment

Health and safety benefits

Enhance occupant comfort

Improve Productivity of occupants

Do Green Building Cost More?

Depends on green features already considered & level of rating

First cost Vs Life cycle cost

Operational savings offset incremental cost

Agencies and Certifications which help you
to be a sustainable Green Building
Why go “Green”?

Cost Savings
Healthier Workplace
Increased Property Value
Legislation
What is LEED?

 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

 USGBC’s “Green Building” rating system.

 Provides a design guideline.

 Establishes consistency on what “Green” means in

building design.
LEED was created to

 Define "Green Building" by establishing a common

standard of measurement
 Promote integrated, whole-building design practices

 Recognize environmental leadership in the building

industry
 Stimulate green competition

 Raise consumer awareness of green building benefits

 Transform the building market.

Who does it affect?

Owners
Architects
Engineers
Developers
City Planners
How does it work?
 Rating Point system
 (69) Possible points from (6) categories:
Sustainable Sites
Water Efficiency
Energy & Atmosphere
Materials & Resources
Indoor Environmental Quality
Innovation & Design Process
How does it work?
 Minimum (26) points needed for certification
 Various levels of certification
Certified 26-32 points
Silver 33-38 points
Gold 39-51 points
Platinum52-69 points

 (7) Prerequisite points must be met before

Green Star Green Building Rating System
Green Star is a comprehensive environmental rating system which rates a
building against eight criteria: environmental management, indoor
environment quality, energy efficiency, transport, water, materials of
construction, land use and ecology and greenhouse omissions. Points are
awarded in each category and a credit point threshold defines each ratings
level.
