Chapter 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the different components of the research. These are; The

Research Design, Research Environment, The Respondents, Instrumentation,

Statistical Treatment of Data, Scoring Scheme and Questionnaire.

This study uses descriptive-correlation method of research. This involves

description, recording analysis and interpretation of conditions that then exist. It’s

descriptive because the academic performance is described. The research attempts to

find out whether or not certain independent variables such as respondents educational

backgrounds, parents monthly income, mental ability, study habits, peer influence and

teachers competence are significantly related to the student’s academic performance.

Research Environment

The study will be conducted at Nothern Bukidnon Community College (NBCC).

This school is a Government school which implements a high learning to the students.

.This school is under the Local Government Unit of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, (LGU).

NBCC is a pet project of Dr. Nereus O. Acosta and Soccoro O. Acosta. It is the First

District of Bukidnon established in 2005 and duly recognized by the Commission on

Higher Education (CHED). Currently, the school offers Bachelor of General Education,

Bachelor of Elementary Education major in Pre-school, Bachelor of secondary

Education Major In English, Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics,

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Business

Administration. 13
The college is located at upper Kihare, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. NBCC is

conducive for learning, it has peaceful and tranquil environment.

Respondents

The Respondents of this study are the first year Local Government Unit Scholars

for the second semester school year 2014-2015. These are the 42 first year students

enrolled in the second semester.

Research Instrument

This study uses the questionnaire which will be accomplished by the

respondents. This instrument had two parts: Part 1 describes the profile of the

respondents. This includes name, age, gender and educational background of the

respondents, socio-economic status of the respondents in terms of family income,

parent’s educational background and parent’s occupation. Part 2 talks about the study

habits of the respondents. This part gives us information about the respondent’s time

management in terms of their study habits.

Scoring Scheme

To determine the respondents interest in studying in this research , the

questionnaire uses the following interpretations:

4 – Strongly agree

3 – Agree

2- Strongly disagree

1 – Disagree

Data Gathering Procedures

The researcher will ask the approval of the College Administrator, Rizaliana

B.Oliver Ph.D through their English 2 Professor Mrs. Teresita C. Ponio to conduct the
study in the school premise if the approval is granted, they will set time to meet the

respondents after their respected classes or during their vacant time to explain to them

the purpose of the study.

Statistical Analysis

The following statistical tools will be used.

1. Frequency (F). This will be used to summarized statistical counts and arrange

data in categories.

2. Percentage (%). This will determine the percent rate of the respondents answers

in different categories.

Where: f=frequency

n= number of respondents

3. Range (R). This will determine the difference of the higher score and the lower

score.
