Brain-Compatible Lesson Plan

Lesson Objective(s): We will be teaching Work. What is the definition of Work, how it is related to
applied Force, net force and distance. What is the mathematical representation of work and how does
one calculate Work based on applied force and the distance produced due to this applied force.

Assessment (Traditional/Authentic): Student will be able to orally define the concept of Work and
provide examples from everyday lives. I addition they will also be able to calculate Work done by an
applied force, and the distance produced by the applied force.

Ways to Gain/Maintain Attention (Primacy): How will you gain and maintain students’ attention?
Consider need, novelty, meaning, or emotion. If we start pushing on a brick wall as hard as we can for
one or two minutes we will be really tired, but in terms of Physics how much work have we done? If we
carry a 50 pound box up 2 flights up stairs we’ll be tired, how much work have we done in this case?
What is the difference between the two?

Content Chunks: How will you divide and teach the content to engage students’ brains?
Lesson Segment 1: Power Notes; taking notes from the text book.
Activities: Student will work in pairs and read from their text book the section on Work;
they will write in their composition notebooks a short definition of Work, a mathematical
representation of work, and provide a visual example of work. They will then share their
definition and examples with rest of the class.

Lesson Segment 2: Formal Definition of Work, common misconceptions on what is work and what
is not work.
Activities: Students will work independently writing definition of work, equation for work,
how it is related to force and distance, how do we represent work graphically, what are the units
of work, and what is one Joule of work equals. Students will be presented with a few examples of
teacher lead animations and will identify whether there is work being done or not.

Lesson Segment 3: Problem Solving: Station Problems.

Activities: Students will work in pairs solving 5 problems posted in the classroom.
