Parent Orientation
June 26, 2019 (Wednesday)

The Chiang Kai Shek College IB


Department held a Parent Orientation for
both PYP and MYP in the college
auditorium on June 26, 2019. PYP parents
were introduced to the years program by
PYP coordinator Mrs. Consuelo Ravago.
MYP parents were introduced/re-introduced
to the IB approaches to teaching and
learning by Mr. Patrick Ong, and were
informed of learning schedules for the year
as well as matters regarding future
promotion or retention. Guest speaker and
IB alumna Ms. Nicole Anne Mempin also
shared her thoughts and experiences of the
IB way of learning, and presented an
interesting slideshow that captured the
complete attention of her audience.

MYP Student Orientation


June 27, 2019 (Thursday)

An orientation for the incoming MYP


students was held in the college conference
room on June 27, 2019. Members of the IB
MYP faculty discussed with students the IB
way of learning, similar to what was taken
up during the parent orientation. The
students were introduced to the Statement
of Inquiry, and were asked to formulate
questions following the instructions given
by English B teacher Ms. Evee Raypon. The
students were also introduced to the topic
of ATL skills, and were given a tour of the
IB facilities after the discussion.

A Week in the IB
July 1-5, 2019 (Monday-Friday)

D e s p i t e t h e r a i n y w e a t h e r, a
Welcome Assembly was held for new MYP
students on July 1, 2019. As part of the
activities lined up for the first day of
school, homeroom meetings were
c o n d u c te d i n e a c h M Y P c l a s s a n d
homeroom teachers were given the task of
i n t r o d u c i n g t h e y e a r ’s e s s e n t i a l
agreements, personalized learning plans as
well as class schedule. Students were also
given a facilities tour to become better
oriented with their learning areas.

A Student Life Assembly was held by Mr. Ian Arevalo to discuss reminders and
policies that the office will be strictly implementing, including but not limited to
absences, social media usage and gift-giving. Students were then asked to form groups and
come up with a sustainable service action project that may be implemented in the later
months. Following this activity, students were given an ATL Skills workshop involving
communication in the Multi-purpose Hall.

The rest of the week was spent giving orientations and demonstrations to several
IB MYP classes simultaneously. Subject orientations, design demonstrations and guidance
and college counselling orientations were among the activities being done. This was
followed by an academic assembly on assessment policy held and students were asked to
create clothing made from newspaper within a given time. ATL workshops about self-
management and thinking were held in the afternoon and students participated in
activities that tested their time management and thinking skills.
An ATL workshop on Research was held in the college auditorium on July 5
focusing on the academic honesty policy of IB (plagiarism, collusion, copying), correct
citations using the APA style as well as the proper timing for citation usage.

Learning-to-Learn Week
July 1-12, 2019 (Monday to Friday)

The Primary Years Programme (PYP)


department had its Learning-to-Learn
Week from 1 July to 12, 2019. The first
weeks of the school year were utilized to
gauge prior knowledge of the students.
Relevant information gathered by the
teacher was reflected upon to support
students' strengths and weaknesses in the
best way possible. The Grade 3 students
participated in different hands-on and
interactive activities such as construction
challenge, debate, self reflection, and games
to assess their skills. These activities
allowed them to show cooperation in a
group, practice working independently,
accomplish tasks within a given time,
present their ideas orally and visually, and
solve real-life problems.
Aside from performing different
tasks, the students also reviewed the
meaning of each IB learner profile traits.
These will guide them throughout their
P Y P l i f e . Va r i o u s a c t i v i t i e s s u c h a s
operations drills, station work, and reading
tasks were also provided to gauge their
proficiency in literacy and numeracy.

Personal Project Topic


Proposal
July 16, 2019 (Tuesday)

The Grade 10 MYP students


presented proposals for their Personal
Projects on July 16, 2019. Amongst the
panel were IB Continuum Consultant
Patrick Ong, MYP Coordinator Diane
Lee and subject teachers Ace Amor and
Glicerio Manalo. Approved Personal
Project topics will be carefully studied
and carried out by the students for 10
DP Orientation months, to be presented for final
evaluation afterwards.
July 9, 2019 (Tuesday)

The DP Orientation for Grade


10 students was conducted on July 9,
2019 in the Mac Lab of Chiang Kai
Shek College. Mr. Patrick Ong, IB
Continuum Consultant, encourages
students to consider for the DP
Programme that may be offered by
the school in the following year. The
orientation included discussions
about the Theor y of Knowledge
(TOK), Creative Arts Service (CAS)
and Extended Essay (EE), subject
selections as well as the external
assessment and diploma acceptance.
The Grade 10 students displayed
eagerness in learning more about the
program and asked several questions
throughout the orientation.

Curriculum Day
July 26, 2019 (Friday)

Curriculum Day for CKSC’s IB-MYP community was held on July 26, 2019.
Parents of the current MYP batches were invited to attend this event and given the
experience of a day in the life of their children in the IB. A total of 6 subject groups led by
their respective teachers presented tasks for parents to do, and parents roamed from
room to room completing their tasks within the designated time frame. After the fun and
informative immersion, parents were asked to write down their thoughts and reflections
about the event on a piece of paper. The results showed an overwhelming amount of
positive responses from parents and reflected their well-wishes for a continuously
progressive IB community in the school.

PhiMUN

Motion to commend delegates!

Jovanna Tan, a student of IB MYP,


bagged the Rookie Award in the recently
held Philippine Model United Nations
(PhiMUN) 2019.

Model United Nations is a simulation of


U N co m m i t te e s w h i c h a l l o w s t h e
students develop their international
relations through diplomatic
competition. They play the role of a UN
delegate who is tasked to research on a
certain issue, and express their country's
stance towards it to be able to pass
favorable resolutions. The conference
requires main skills such as researching,
writing, public speaking, and debating.

The Phillippine Model United Nations


(PhiMUN) 2019 commenced at
University of the Philippines last June 14
to 16, 2019. Jovanna Tan of Grade 9 MYP
and Kaitlyn See of Grade 10 MYP were
a ssigned to be in the UN Women
Committee and represent the countries
Brazil and Australia respectively. Among
the more than a hundred of local and
international delegates, Jovanna Tan
(delegate of Brazil) was given the Rookie
Award, an award given to a first-timer
who has shown a great potential.

Jovanna and Kaitlyn are expected to lead


the Model UN of Chiang Kai Shek
College's IB Program that will start
r u n n i n g t h i s s c h o o l y e a r. T h e
organization aims to train more students
to join local and international MUNs.

Campaign Day for Clubs


August 7, 2019 (Wednesday)

On the morning of the 7th of


August, the MYP students participated
in Campaign Day for their clubs. Each
club was formed from the interest of a
proposing student, and several clubs lined
up for recruitment including but not
limited to the Arts Club, the Motion
Picture Club, Student Artists Club,
Boardgame Club, Chess Club and Visual
Rhythms Dance Club.

Hokkien Session
August 14, 2019 (Wednesday)

The IB MYP students as well as faculty attended their first Hokkien session on
August 14, 2019. Hokkien sessions shall be held once a month and serves as an activity
that will encourage students to brush up on the Hokkien language. Led by the Chinese
instruction teachers, this session tackled the topic of the Mooncake Festival. Students
participated in casual conversation about buying and eating mooncake, and a speaking
activity for both the students and faculty followed suit. Both parties were formed into
groups and given a set of words related to the mooncake festival. Each group had to come
up with a dialogue with every member (including faculty) having at least one line
delivered in Hokkien. Several volunteers performed their speeches in front of their
audience and both students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the performances.

Parent Workshop 1
August 24, 2019 (Saturday)

The first parent workshop for the


IB community commenced on Saturday,
the 24th of August 2019. Conducted in
the college conference room, IB-parent
Mrs. Lilliam So Yu-Hui introduced
various ways technology may influence
and affect the lives of the children of
current generations, whether or not IB-
taught. According to the mother of
three, learning current technological
trends like social media and online
gaming may prove to be beneficial to IB
parents because it not only helps in
keeping an eye out for the children, it
also provides an avenue for parents to
learn alongside their young. Ultimately,
keeping up with the generation’s
technological activities will create more
well-informed and digitall y sa vvy
parents whom will help contribute to
their children’s future welfare.

Filipino Week 2019


August 29-30, 2019 (Thursday & Friday)

Filipino Week for this year was celebrated on the 29th and 30th of August, and was
jam-packed with activities and performances honoring the Filipino language and heritage.
The MYP students participated in Literature Workshops by Alab and Sinag Collective
and eagerly listened to an author talk by Mr. Jayson Mondragon, writer of the popular
ABS-CBN show “Kadenang Ginto”. Aside from battling it out in a Quiz Bowl and
performing their hearts out in the Open Mic Session, students also enjoyed the
celebration through exciting games in a culminating activity of Palarong Pinoy.

The PYP Department celebrated


Buwan ng Wikang Filipino with the
theme: “Ang ating pagka-Filipino ay
naipakikita sa ating pananalita, kasuotan,
laro, sayaw, pagkain, at midya”. Students
e x p l o r e d a b o u t Fi l i p i n o c u l t u r e ,
traditions, and practices through
singing traditional songs, learning
different dialects, and kite (saranggola)
making. During the Culminating
activity, students of each grade level
showcased Filipino songs and cultural
p r e s e n t a t i o n s . Gr a d e 1 s t u d e n t s
performed an Ifugao chant entitled
Ragragsakan. Grade 2 students sang a
Visayan folk song Si Felimon while
Grade 3 students presented a cultural
ensemble Kapag-apir. The program also
included “Palarong Pinoy” which
included games such as Piko, Agawang
Panyo, Luksong-Tinik, and Tumbang Preso.
Ever yone enjoyed and actively
participated in different activities.

Multiple Intelligence (MI) Fair


September 4-6, 2019 (Wednesday to Friday)

Last September 4 - 6, the 3rd Grade


students of the Primary Years Program held a
Multiple Intelligences (MI) Fair as part of their
summative assessment for the first unit. The
a c t i v i t y a i m e d to s p r e a d a w a r e n e s s a n d
encoura ge the members of the school
community to practice ways to improve their
thinking and learning. Students formed eight
expert groups to represent each intelligence
based upon the Multiple Intelligences Theory of
Howard Gardner, which they prepared on trifold
presentations. Simulation activities were also
conducted in support of the eight stations for
the enjoyment of their audience.

Open House
September 5-6, 2019(Thursday to Friday)

Last September 5 and 6, the PYP


had its first Open House for the school
year. The aim of the two-day event was
to develop an open and involved
learning community not only for
students and teaching staff but also for
the parents and families. 

The event ga ve parents the


opportunity to observe the classes of
their children. Through these
observations, they became acquainted
with the routines in class, the activities
the children do in different subject
areas, and the use of an inquiry-based
approach in the classroom. The Grade
t h r e e s t u d e n t s h e l d a Mu l t i p l e
intelligences (MI) Fair wherein they
presented their learnings on the first
unit to their parents. As for the other
grade levels, some continued with their
summative assessments while others
accomplished reflection tasks. The
event was a success because of the
support and cooperation of both
parents and teachers.
