ABSTRACT

A filter press is a piece of equipment used in liquid/solid separation.

Specifically, the filter press separates the liquids and solids using pressure
filtration, wherein a slurry is pumped into the filter press and is dewatered
under pressure. Basically, each filter press is designed based on the volume
and type of slurry that needs to be dewatered. Micronics, Inc. is a trusted
expert in liquid/solid separation and offers a wide range of filter press types
and capacities to suit specific application needs for trouble-free, economical
dewatering. These include configurations such as sidebar automatic, manual
overhead, automatic dual overhead beam, stainless steel clad, explosion-
proof filter presses, vacuum filter presses, and hand filter presses.

INTRODUCTION

FIGURE 1 :- PARTS OF PLATE AND FRAME FILTER

PRESS
 CONSTRUCTION :-

 It consists of plates and frames arranged alternately and supported on a pair of rails.
The plate is a solid piece having a ribbed surface. The frame is hollow and provides
the space for the filter cake. The alternate arrangement of plates and frames results in
the formation of chambers. The plates and frames are square or rectangular in shape
and can be made of cast iron, stainless steel, nickel, aluminium, monel, hard rubber or
plastics (polypropylene). Coated materials are also used (rubber or lead or epoxy
resin covered)

 Filter cloths are placed over each plate to cover the plate surface on both sides so that
hollow frame is separated from the plate by the filter cloth. The plates and frames
have circular holes on the corners for feed and discharge. The filter cloths are also
having holes that match the holes on the plates and frames. The filter cloth
themselves act as gaskets.

 When the press is closed by means of a hand screw or hydraulically, a continuous
channel is formed along the whole length of the press out of the corner holes in the
plates, cloths, and frame. The frames have openings in the interior from the corner
holes so that the slurry channel opens into the interior of frame (i.e., in the chamber
formed between each pair of successive plates). At the bottom of the plates, holes are
cored which connect the faces of the plates to the outlet cocks

 WORKING :-

 Slurry to be filtered is pumped through the feed channel. It runs into the chambers
formed and fills the chamber completely (i.e., frames). As the feed pump continues to
supply the slurry to be filtered, the pressure goes on increasing. Because of this, the
filtrate passes through the cloth, runs down the faces of plates and finally leaves the
filter through discharge cocks. The solids are deposited on the filter cloth. The two
cakes are formed simultaneously in each chamber and these join when the frame is
full and no more slurry can enter into it. The press is then said to be jammed Wash
liquid may be introduced in the press to remove soluble impurities from the solids
and the cake is then blown with air to remove the residual liquid from it. The press is
then dismantled, and the cake of solids scrapped off from each plate

 In simple washing, the wash liquor is introduced through the feed channel and leaves
the filter through the outlet cocks (i.e., it follows the same path as the slurry and
filtrate). It is suited when the cake is uniform and permeable.

 In open discharge type, the filtrate is discharged through cocks into an open launder
so that the filtrate from each plate can be inspected and any plate can be isolated from
the service by shutting off the cock if it is not giving a clear filtrate. Hence, it is used
when absolutely clear filtrate is required. In closed discharge, the filtrate channel runs
the entire length of press into a discharge pipe at one end. The closed technique is
used when toxic or volatile materials are to be filtered.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

 Filter presses can be built in a wide range of sizes, from small, lab-scale 150 mm
presses, to those with much larger capacities, such as those with 1500 and 2000 mm
filter plates. Filter presses are used for liquid/solid separation in an extensive range of
industries and applications including:

 Food and beverage processing

 Chemical and pigments manufacturing
 Mining
 Power generation
 Aggregates, asphalt and cement production
 Steel mills
 Municipal plants
 Pharmaceutical & biotech
 Dyes intermediate

CUSTOMIZING A FILTER PRESS FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION NEEDS :-

 The industry, application and operational considerations will guide specifics such as
the overall design, filtration capacity, number of chambers, filter plate size, materials
of construction, as well as additional features/systems such as automatic plate shifters,
cloth washing system, drip trays, cake shields and safety light curtains. Design of a
filter press depends on a host of factors such as filtration cycle time, cake dryness
required, cloth life, whether manual or automated plate shifting is desired, and many
other factors.

CASE STUDY: LIME DEWATERING FILTER PRESS

 Among the solutions we offer, our 1500 mm, 250 cubic feet filter press has proven
successful for a municipal application: dewatering lime. Most recently, our team
worked with a drinking water facility in Ohio to address the filtration and disposal
needs for a large amount of lime used there. The results have been positive for all
involved, including the local farming community.

 LIME DEWATERING SOLUTION :-

 M.W. Watermark manufactured two 1500 mm, 250 cubic foot filter press systems
for Aqua America. Both units were set up in a major drinking water facility in
Massillon, Ohio. With local communities depending on the plant for their water
supply, it is critical that the facility have modern water treatment methods and a
responsible way to dispose of the byproducts caused by treatment.

 The water supply in Massillon, OH is naturally hard. It is softened through the
addition of lime (calcium hydroxide) which removes the calcium and magnesium
ions. Once the water has been softened, the lime solids must then must be removed
from the water. With the new equipment in place, the lime slurry is pumped through
this modern filtration system and dewatered using pressure filtration.

 The solid lime materials are ground up with an M.W. Watermark screw conveyor
and disposed of in a responsible way– they go to local farmers as a natural source
of fertilization for their soil. The filtrate, or liquid, that results from the process is
pumped back through to the head of the plant and re-used. The results have been
very positive, and the future looks bright for this hard-working processing plant.

CONCLUSION

 Filter presses are probably the most versatile dewatering device since they
can achieve excellent filtrate quality as well as cake washing for impurity
removal. Specifically, the filter press separates the liquids and solids using
pressure filtration, wherein a slurry is pumped into the filter press and is
dewatered under pressure. Basically, each filter press is designed based on
the volume and type of slurry that needs to be dewatered. Micronics, Inc.
is a trusted expert in liquid/solid separation and offers a wide range of
filter press types and capacities to suit specific application needs for
trouble-free, economical dewatering.
