Chapter I The Problem and Its Background

Introduction
This research was conducted to identify the effects of sleep deprivation on the

academic performance of the top 10 achievers of grade 10 students in Paso de Blas

National High School. The purpose of this study was to give information about the

effects of sleep deprivation to the beneficiaries of this research, which would better

inform the student to have enough sleep every night.

The researcher aimed to assess if sleep deprivation affects the academic

performance of the students.

The researcher used quantitative research to come up with the results by using a

statistical method. The data gathered in this study will be supported by the

conclusion. The researcher will also come up with the recommendation of the study.

Background of the Study

Sometimes we feel tired after we woke up in the morning without doing

something than we are going to bed after all of our responsibilities in school. This is

what we called Sleep Deprivation. Sleep Deprivation is commonly defined as a state

wherein students don't get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation could lead to poor

academic performance and mental health and behavioral issues. Lack of sleep also

reduces the efficacy of immune systems and that leaves students vulnerable to all the

illnesses they are exposed to at school. Can we say that those students who are sleep

deprived have poor academic performance? Harm their academic performance? But
this sleep deprivation can also give a positive effect especially to those students who

exerting efforts to have good grades. Some of you answer yes, but from this study,

you can explore your knowledge or perception that not all the times sleep deprivation

had negative effects, this study could give you prior knowledge that sleep deprivation

has a good effect in academic performance from top 10 students in grade 10.

Gaining enough sleep at night will improve the health, wellness, and quality of

life of every student. Poor sleepers usually lead to depressed, stressed, tired, without

energy, and irritable. "Many reasons are accounting for students sleep deprivation but

academic stress occasioned by academic workloads and social pressure were

considered among the factors attributing students engagement in sleep problems”

(Ginsberg & Gapen, 2008 et al). These sleep problem will not only affect the

studies of students such as being inactive and poor concentration inside the

classroom, but it will also lead to serious sleep disorders such as insomnia. A student

needs to get at least 8 hours of sleep to be at a higher level of productivity. A person

who can't get these sleep hours will prone to very fatigue and the cognitive

performance will worsen. At this point, the brain will start entering brief periods of

complete unconsciousness.

Statement of the Problem

Sleep Deprivation can cause is the inability to focus especially during in-class

discussions, which is the students having irregular sleeping patterns which may affect

the academic performance of students. Our goal with this study was to provide

information about the problem of this research that describes how schoolwork and

house chores affect the sleep patterns of the top 10 achievers of grade 10 students.

Chapter II Review of Related Literature and Studies

This review of related literature will give the readers more information about the

effects of sleep deprivation on the students. Some authors gave their opinions about

this topic and connect it to other studies.

Sleep is one of the most important parts of our life. Sleep plays a vital role in

good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the
right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, and quality of life.

Sleep deprivation is a general term to describe a state caused by inadequate quantity

or quality of sleep, including voluntary or involuntary sleeplessness and circadian

rhythm sleep disorders (Better Health Channel).

According to Aldahal and Hammaon ( 2011), sleep deprivation becomes one of

the most common issues in society today. It is the state where one person couldn't get

enough sleep at night. Having adequate sleep every night needs to ensure that they

have a proper maintenance bodily process to avoid fatigue. In another study

conducted by Anjun, Bajwa, and Saeed (2018), sleep plays an integral part in

students well-being because it assists in the process of learning and retaining

information. If the students are having enough sleep every night, they can maintain

their grades high.

Students are not being sleep-deprived without any reasons. Students are being

sleep-deprived because they have so many responsibilities. They are not only

focusing on their studies because they also have responsibilities aside from that,

which is hard for them to manage their time. They have duties in their home that also

need to do and they also spend their leisure time visiting social media. In the study

conducted by Peri (2010) some students are using technology for social media to

interact with someone. Students right now are almost depending on technology. They

cannot go to bed without looking at their phone. However, some students are also

spending their time doing paper works in the school. As supported by the study of

Norrington (2009), some students are being sleep-deprived because of this paper

works from school. A student is almost awake at night just to finish their school work

to have high grades. They do everything just to finish their task without knowing that

it affects their health. Because of the overloaded school works, students may feel
stress from it. But, this school works must do by the students to pass. In the study

conducted by Leonidas (2014) some of the students don't have enough sleep because

of school stress. Only 30% of the student have enough sleep which is 8 hours every

night, those are the average recommended amount of sleep for adolescent. And 20%

of students pull an all-nighter at least once a month. As supported by the study of

Britz and Pappas (2014), only 50% of the students reported high levels of stress that

was related to academic workload and time management. Aside from school stress,

students can be also sleep-deprived in terms of problems and distractions. Tornic and

Bloch (2009) stated that one condition that shapes sleep patterns is the distraction for

the student. One of the distraction that they been pertaining is the family problem. It

is hard for the student to focus in school if there is something that's bothering them at

the house.

Sleep deprivation has effects on students, not only in academic performance but

also on their health. In the study conducted by Gilbert and Weaver (2010), they found

out that sleep-deprived has negative effects on students academic performance. In the

previous studies similar to the present study, since they identified the effect of sleep

deprivation on academic performance, their study is distinctly relative cited that

sleep-deprived individuals can affect their communication in retrieving the words and

delivering because their brain can't function properly. If we have a lack of sleep, our

cognitive skills, memory, attention, alertness and our concentration don't work

properly. Furthermore, according to Mendez (2009), being sleep-deprived could

make students unable to focus especially during the class discussion, which is hard

for the students to listen because they become unstable that could lead to their poor

performance. If the students got low grades because of being sleep-deprived, there is

a possibility that the students will be depressed. Students may feel not content
because of their grades and may feel hopeless. Some possibilities you may encounter

while being sleep-deprived are the depression, anxiety, feeling of hopelessness, and

worthlessness that may result in suicide on the people (Vallido et.al 2009). Sleep

deprivation can also affect the interaction of students to one another. Students find it

hard to communicate with one another because their flexibility in thinking is getting

low due to the feeling of sleepy. According to Ming et.al (2010), the challenging task

that suffers from sleep deprivation is the flexibility of thinking and avoidance to

interact with others. Students cannot focus on what they are doing because their brain

is not functioning properly. As supported by the study conducted by Anderson et.al

(2012), sleep deprivation can affect the working memory and also the communication

skills on one people. Students can't think properly and hard for them to decide wisely.

Sleep deprivation might affect the decision making of the students because their brain

is not functioning properly (Huckethal 2013). Aside from that, sleep deprivation

could also increase the incidence of illness in students. Sleep complaints or poor

sleep quality could increase the mental symptoms of students (Lund 2010).

Sleep deprivation among the students should lessen up. It should be

prevented. People should get 8 hours of sleep every night to have a healthy lifestyle.

According to Porpova (2013), students should get 8 hours of sleep every night, to

avoid emotional issues like irritability and aggression. Students should have enough

sleep to make a decision wisely and can interact with everyone properly. Students at

the age of 13 above should get enough rest at night to have a healthy lifestyle

(Chokroverty 2010). Students who tend to do multi-tasking should know how to

manage their time. In the study conducted by Rintahaka (2016), the body of the

students requires more sleep to be able to physically develop. Students will be able to

focus inside the classroom if they get proper sleep at night. As supported by the study
conducted by Antino et.al (2012), students who have 8 hours of sleep per night are

more likely to maintain a regular academic pattern. The students need to have enough

sleep to maintain their good academic performance at school.

The doctor gave their statement on how to treat this sleep deprivation to one

person. One of the best treatments according to the studies of Marzano (2010), one

adjustment recommended by doctors is to practice daily relaxation techniques. One

popular relaxation techniques are meditation. Such techniques allow individuals to

relax both the mind and body. This is an excellent way to reduce stress and

encourage better sleeping habits. Doctors also strongly advise patients to practice

healthy diet and exercise routines. According to Ligoun (2011), exercise is very

important, it can help to release our muscle and nervous tension and avoid the side

effects of sleep deprivation.

principal and teacher affected the time period to give a little bit of time excuse the

selected students needed in this study to answer the questionnaire.

E. Each questionnaire included a cover title containing clear statement to answers the

respondents carefully.
F. The letter also included clear and specific directions to fill up the instrument of the

study.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

The responses that will be gathered from every respondents will use for primary

data collection it will be score to identify the mean and tabulate into a master sheet.

The researchers use the descriptive statistics as the statistical treatment of the data.

Descriptive statistics provide techniques of numerically and graphically shown the

information that gives an overall picture of the data collected.

From descriptive statistics, mean, and graphs will use to present the results from data

collected. The mean of every score of the respondents will show if sleep deprivation

has a positive and negative effects to the students.

The formula to find the mean of the score of every respondents is:

x̄=Σx/n
