2. A helical spring is made from a wire of 6 mm diameter and has outside diameter
of 75 mm. If the permissible shear stress is 350 MPa and modulus of rigidity 84
kN/mm2, find the axial load which the spring can carry and the deflection per

3. The following particulars of a single reduction spur gear are given :
Gear ratio = 10 : 1; Distance between centres = 660 mm approximately; Pinion
transmits 500kW at 1800 r.p.m.; Involute teeth of standard proportions
(addendum = m) with pressure angle of22.5°; Permissible normal pressure
between teeth = 175 N per mm of width.
Find :1. The nearest standard module if no interference is to occur;

4. A pair of helical gears is to transmit 15 kW. The teeth are 20° stub in diametral
plane and have a helix angle of 45°. The pinion runs at 10 000 r.p.m. and has 80
mm pitch diameter. The gear has 320 mm pitch diameter. If the gears are made of
cast steel having allowable static strength of 100 MPa; determine a suitable
module and face width from static strength considerations and check the gears

2. Design a close coiled helical compression spring for a service load ranging from 2250 N
to 2750 N. The axial deflection of the spring for the load range is 6 mm. Assume a spring
index of 5. The permissible shear stress intensity is 420 MPa and modulus of rigidity, G
= 84 kN/mm2. Neglect the effect of stress concentration. Draw a fully dimensioned
sketch of the spring, showing details of the finish of the end coils.

3. A helical cast steel gear with 30° helix angle has to transmit 35 kW at 1500r.p.m. If the
gear has 24 teeth, determine the necessary module, pitch diameter and face width for
20°full depth teeth. The static stress for cast steel may be taken as 56 MPa. The width of
face may be taken as 3 times the normal pitch. What would be the end thrust on the
gear? The tooth factor for 20°full depth involute gear may be taken as0.154 – 0.912 /TE ,
where TE represents the equivalent number of teeth.

4. A power screw having double start square threads of 25 mm nominal diameter and 5
mm pitch is acted upon by an axial load of 10 kN. The outer and inner diameters of
screw collar are 50 mm and 20 mm respectively. The coefficient of thread friction and
collar friction may be assumed as 0.2 and 0.15 respectively. The screw rotates at 12
r.p.m. Assuming uniform wear condition at the collar and allowable thread bearing
pressure of 5.8 N/mm2, find: 1. the torque required to rotate the screw; 2. the stress in
the screw; and 3. the number of threads of nut in engagement with screw.

5. A four stroke diesel engine has the following specifications :
Brake power = 5 kW ; Speed = 1200 r.p.m. ; Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.35
N/mm2 ; Mechanical efficiency = 80 %. Determine : 1. bore and length of the cylinder ; 2.
thickness of the cylinder head ; and 3. size of studs for the cylinder head.

2. Design and draw a valve spring of a petrol engine for the following operating conditions
: Spring load when the valve is open = 400 N Spring load when the valve is closed = 250
N Maximum inside diameter of spring = 25 mm Length of the spring when the valve is
open = 40 mm Length of the spring when the valve is closed = 50 mm Maximum

3. A gear drive is required to transmit a maximum power of 22.5 kW. The velocity ratio is
1:2 and r.p.m. of the pinion is 200. The approximate centre distance between the shafts
maybe taken as 600 mm. The teeth have 20° stub involute profiles. The static stress for
the gear material (which is cast iron) may be taken as 60 MPa and face width as 10
times the module. Find the module, face width and number of teeth on each gear. Check
the design for dynamic and wear loads. The deformation or dynamic factor in the
Buckingham equation may be taken as 80 and the material combination factor for the

4. Design a connecting rod for an I.C. engine running at 1800 r.p.m. and developing a
maximum pressure of 3.15 N/mm2. The diameter of the piston is 100 mm ; mass of the
reciprocating parts per cylinder 2.25 kg; length of connecting rod 380 mm; stroke of
piston 190 mm and compression ratio 6 : 1. Take a factor of safety of 6 for the design.
Take length to diameter ratio for big end bearing as 1.3 and small end bearing as 2 and
the corresponding bearing pressures as 10 N/mm2 and 15 N/mm2. The density of
material of the rod may be taken as 8000 kg/m3 and the allowable stress in the bolts as
60 N/mm2 and in cap as 80 N/mm2. The rod is to be of I-section for which you can
choose your own proportions. Draw a neat dimensioned sketch showing provision for
lubrication. Use Rankine formula for which the numerator constant may be taken as
320 N/mm2 and the denominator constant 1 / 7500

2. A semi-elliptical laminated vehicle spring to carry a load of 6000 N is to consist of seven
leaves 65 mm wide, two of the leaves extending the full length of the spring. The spring
is to be 1.1 m in length and attached to the axle by two U-bolts 80 mm apart. The bolts
hold the central portion of the spring so rigidly that they may be considered equivalent
to a band having a width equal to the distance between the bolts. Assume a design
stress for spring material as 350 MPa. Determine : 1. Thickness of leaves, 2. Deflection
of spring, 3. Diameter of eye, 4. Length of leaves, and 5. Radius to which leaves should be
initially bent. Sketch the semi-elliptical leaf-spring arrangement.
The standard thickness of leaves are : 5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 9, 10, 11 etc. in mm.

3. The mean diameter of the square threaded screw having pitch of 10 mm is 50 mm. A
load of 20 kN is lifted through a distance of 170 mm. Find the work done in lifting the
load and the efficiency of the screw, when
1. The load rotates with the screw, and
2. The load rests on the loose head which does not rotate with the screw.
The external and internal diameter of the bearing surface of the loose head is 60 mm
and 10 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction for the screw and the bearing surface

4. Design a cast iron piston for a single acting four stroke engine for the following
data: Cylinder bore = 100 mm ; Stroke = 125 mm ; Maximum gas pressure = 5 N/mm 2 ;
Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.75 N/mm2 ; Mechanical efficiency = 80% ; Fuel
consumption = 0.15 kg per brake power per hour ; Higher calorific value of fuel = 42 ×
103 kJ/kg ; Speed = 2000 r.p.m. Any other data required for the design may be assumed.
