Energy

I. Energy Transformation

Things to do:
1. Watch a video from youtube: ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS~Science For Fun
2. Do Energy Transformation Worksheet.

II. Heat energy

Heat (thermal) energy is created by the movement of particles (atoms) that
produces heat. Heat (thermal) energy increases as temperature increases because as
temperature increases, atoms move faster (have more kinetic energy).
Watch a video from youtube : Science for kids: Heat energy video (Turtlediary).
There are 3 ways that heat can move :
– Conduction
– Convection
– Radiation
a. Conduction
Conduction is the transfer of heat by direct contact. Conduction is a process by
which heat is transferred from the hot area of a solid object to the cool area of a solid
object.
Example A hand holds a metal rod
above a lit candle. The
molecules quickly heat up
at the point where the
flame touches the rod. The
heat then spreads across
the entire metal rod and
the heat is then able to be
felt by the hand.
b. Convection
Convection is the movement of heat in liquids and gases. It occurs when a fluid
physically moves into an area of different temperature and then heats this area up, or
cools it down.

c. Radiation
Radiation is heat transfer through space by electromagnetic waves. Unlike
Conduction and Convection, Radiation can occur in empty space. Waves such as
visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet light are examples of radiation.

Example Picture the Sun and the

Earth with arrows
traveling from the Sun to
the Earth through space.
The arrows represent the
energy that travels to the
Earth via radiation, which
does not require any
medium (atoms or
molecules) to do so.

III. Sound Energy

Things to do:
1. Watch a video on youtube : What is Sound? | The Dr. Binocs Show .
2. While watching the video answer some question given in the Worksheet
(Taking notes about sound energy).
IV. Alternative Energy
Alternative sources of energy are the ones which do not cause any undesirable
consequences to the environment, are renewable and are free.
Alternative Energy refers to energy sources other than fossil fuels, this includes
all renewable sources.
1. Solar Energy
Solar power is produced by collecting sunlight and converting it into electricity.
This is done by using solar panels, which are large flat panels made up of many
individual solar cells.

2. Wind Energy
Wind turbines are used to generate electricity from the kinetic power of the wind.
The wind turns the large blades and the blades turn a generator.

3. Water (Hydroelectric) Energy

Rivers and streams are re-directed through hydro generators to produce energy.
Flowing water is used to turn a turbine which generates electricity.
4. Biomass
Biomass is organic material that comes from plants and animals, and it is a
renewable source of energy. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb
the sun's energy in a process called photosynthesis. When biomass is burned, the
chemical energy in biomass is released as heat. Biomass can be burned directly or
converted to liquid biofuels or biogas that can be burned as fuels.
a. Biogas

b. Biofuel
Different biofuels are produced differently. For example :
– Ethanol is produced by fermenting corn or sugarcane (fuels).
– Biodiesel is produced by breaking down animal or plant fats in the presence of
methanol (for transportation).
V. Saving Energy (Energy Conservation)

Things to do:
1. Watch a video on youtube : How To Save Energy for School Teaching - 25SDA.
2. Making saving energy plans (Do Saving Energy Action Plan Worksheet). Please
write 5 plans how to save energy that you are going to do at home for 3 weeks. That
action will be started from tomorrow Thursday, 28 March 2019 – Thursday, April 18,
2019.
