C. Lesson Proper

“Brick/block Laying Tools and Equipment”

Masonry works requires tools for various

purposes i.e. handling of mortar, for dressing of
stone, for cutting of bricks to get required shape etc.
as it goes with tradition in existence since the days
of the ancient Indian and Egypt, masonry deals with
some common elements as crushed stones from the
earth and simple metal tools.

1. POINTED TROWEL. It is used to pick up

and spread mortar on bed and cross joints in
the brickwork. It is a hand trowel also used
in masonry for leveling, spreading and
shaping mortar or concrete. The trowel is
also used to tap bricks down on to the bed
and can be used for random cutting of soft
bricks.
2. WOODEN FLOAT. Which is traditional
wood working tools generally used when
making a wooden plane after plastering.
3. SPADE OR SHOVEL. use to dig soil for
foundation trenches and contained metal
plate at the end of long wooden handle.
They are used to mix mortar and used to
place cement, mortar, concrete in head pan.
4. CROW BAR. use for digging the ground
and to remove the roots of tress in the
ground, nails etc.

whether a surface is horizontal (level) or
vertical (plumb).
6. PLUMB BOB is a weight, usually with a
pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a
string and used as a vertical reference line,
or plumb line.
7. Framing square. It is used to set out right
angles at the corner of masonry wall. This is
very important and basic tool used in
masonry work. This tool has “L” shape. It is
made of flat steel having each arm about 0.5
m long.
8. HACKSAW. This Is a fine-toothed saw,
originally and mainly made for cutting
metal.
9. CROSS CUT SAW. A saw designed for
cutting wood perpendicular to/across the
wood grain.
10. SLEDGE HAMMER. use when the ground
is hard and contains rock layers. A large
weighted metal heads is provided at the
wooden with which hard layers can be
cracked which makes easy to be digging.
11. HAMMER DRILL. Also known as
percussion drill or impact drill, a power
tools used chiefly for drilling in hard
materials. It is a type of rotary drill with an
impact mechanism that generates
hammering motion and pulverize the
material to be bored.
12. CONCRETE MIXER. A machine
revolving drum that mix or combine cement,
sand gravel and water to make a concrete
and mortar.
