POWER TRIP!

a Presidential Simulation

Congratulations! You are our new president. We know you have worked
very hard to get to this point. You are not much of a partier, so you skip the formal
party night and get straight to work. After delivering your inaugural address, the
following issues require your attention:

 Presidential Veto 4pm: After replacing your adversary in office, you decided
to veto a bill that Congress tried to pass that you disagree with. You should
probably invite the press to show how you are backing up your promises to
the American people.
 Phone meeting at 5pm with the Turkish ambassador to the US: There was an
earthquake in Turkey last night that killed approximately 7,000 people. They
have requested relief assistance from the United States.
 Meeting at 5:30pm with the governor of Connecticut: There is a federal
prisoner who will be executed at midnight tonight. They were convicted of
killing several people around the tri-state area. The governor is concerned
you will pardon this person, and he has come to ask that you let the
execution be carried out.
 Meeting at 6pm with several senators from your party: They want to push
for an immigration reform bill to deal with the issues of illegal immigration.
 You have dinner with your spouse and children at 7pm: The press has
requested they take pictures at your first meal with the family as president.
 Meeting at 8:15pm with the several generals and political advisors: We need
to determine your best options with North Korea. North Korea just sank 5
South Korea war ships and is threatening to nuke South Korea. Should we
defend our allies (South Korea)?
 Meeting at 9pm with cabinet: The cabinet needs to inform you on what is
happening in each of their individual areas of expertise. You need to
prioritize which issues to talk about first and how to move forward.
 Meeting at 9:30pm with a few members of the Senate: Immediately after you
took office a Supreme Court Justice retired. You have to nominate a
replacement that will be approved by the Senate. The Senators are there to
meet with you to brainstorm some about some acceptable replacements.
 Social visit at 10pm with the Speaker of the House: The Speaker is not from
the same party as you and would like to sit down over drinks and discuss
other options on how to approach the immigration issues.
 Meeting at 10:30 with the presidential interior decorator: You must meet the
decorator in your oval office to discuss how you want it to look when you
deliver nationwide speeches from behind the desk.
 Meeting at 11pm with the director of the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA): The EPA would appreciate more strict sanctions against companies
polluting the atmosphere, ground, and water. He would like you to lower
acceptable level of pollutants allowed within the range provided by Congress.
All you need to do is let the director know what level to set the expectations
at within the legal range and they will enforce it.
 Meeting with press secretary at 12am: Since you have done such a great job
today, the press secretary would like you to go on television tomorrow in
front of the press to discuss all the wonderful things you did. He had a few
statements written up for you to choose from. You just have to pick one and
read it off the teleprompter.

Your first job is figure out what your role is in each of these meetings and events.
Using your Powers and Duties of the President Study Chart, categorize each one of
these events into one of the roles of the president by writing each event in the
proper part of the chart:

Chief of State

Chief Diplomat

Chief Executive

Commander in
Chief

Legislative Leader

Party Leader

Judicial Leader
Before you can carry out any of the things you wish to do, you must first
understand what powers you have as president. Below is a list of each appointment.
Write what powers you can use for each circumstance in the space chart.

Finally, with your knowledge of the roles and powers of the president, determine a
course of action for each issue. These answers should be 1-3 complete sentences.
You should consider what you have the power to do, what the right decision might
be, and how that decision will affect your popularity and the world.
