Facebook phenomenon
Facebook was originally named The Face Book and it was developed by Harvard student Mark
Zuckerberg. The first use of the Face Book was on the Harvard campus and it was limited only to
Harvard students. Soon the Face Book spread like wild fire around the other major U.S. Universities.
Mark Zuckerberg dropped the Harvard and pursued his facebook dream to become one of the 4th most-
trafficked websites in the world with more than 90 million active users.
Moving the company headquarters to Silicon Valley and becoming a billionaire on paper, Mark is
often compared with other Harvard college dropout entrepreneurs and innovators such as Bill Gates and
Steve Jobs. The spirits of Silicon Valley have taken notice, and lately Mr. Zuckerberg has been offered a
variety of deals.
Interesting fact is that the facebook.com domain was purchased for $200,000 and now the total
value of the company is worth more than $15 billion. As of 2007, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has
become an instant billionaire; according to some sources he owns approximately 30% of the company
and this equals more than $4 billion of total net worth. Forbes ranked him the youngest billionaire at 23
years old, and he is certainly one of the wealthiest 20-something of the world.
Facebook has eventually become everything more than a social network. It helps you not only
connect with your friends but also creates a huge knowledge pool and discussion forum using the vast
number of features it provides. There are over 250 million registered users on Facebook of which 125
million login for at least once almost daily. Over 1 billion photos and 10 million videos are uploaded to
Facebook each month.
Everyone is welcome to join social networking sites and can easily claim to be someone they are
not. Some individuals have expressed feeling 'rude' if they do not except a friend request, even if they do
not recognise the person. It is impossible to screen strangers on social networking sites, however it is
possible to report any inappropriate messaging, and any specific person that a member does not want
contacting them can block the intruder, rendering them unable of accessing the members’ profile.
By 2005, the use of Facebook had already become so ubiquitous that the generic verb "facebooking"
had come into use to describe the process of browsing others' profiles or updating one's own. In 2008,
Collins English Dictionary declared "Facebook" as their new Word of the Year. Books, movies, TV
shows and debates where created especially to present the “Facebook” phenomenon to the whole world.
Nowadays’ generation is caught in this unique and surreal space where, through things like
Facebook, we can explode the wonder of times past and freshen memories of friendships and social
relationships that aren't so far removed from our identities that we wouldn't find meaning in dredging
them up and restoring them.
