CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Tardiness is the state or quality of being tardy. It refers to the students who always

arrive late in class and act or move slow. A tardy student presents a lack of responsibility.

Being habitually late in class shows disrespect towards the teachers and the school’s rules

and regulations. Being on time is not only a must do or duty for students, but also a part of

respect, good manners, and being responsible. The tardiness of a student also disturbs other

students and the teacher, distracting the flow of the discussion of the whole class. All in

all, the tardiness of a student has a lot of disadvantages that’s why students should eliminate

the cause regarding tardiness.

The purpose of this study is to identify the reasons and explanations to have further

understanding about student’s tardiness because this kind of problem affects the academic

performance of students in school. And that’s why the researchers came up and decided to

conduct a research to pin-point the tardiness of Grade 11 Senior High School students.

Statement of the Problem

The main focus of this study is to identify and deepen the researcher’s knowledge

about the reasons, results and how to prevent the tardiness of Grade 11 Senior High School

students as well as to answer the following questions:

1. What are the reasons in student’s tardiness?

2. How tardiness affects the student’s academic performances?

3. How will students prevent being tardy in class?

2

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the tardiness among MNCHS students. The center of this

study is to find out the reasons, results, of being tardy and also how to prevent tardiness.

The researchers will observe the behavior of the students and also conduct a survey and an

interview in order to get the data and the information needed. The respondents will be

randomly selected and the information that will be gathered will only be related to the main

purpose of the study.

Significance of the Study

The Masbate National Comprehensive High School has the reputation of being a

school of responsible and comprehensive students. This could be altered if tardiness of the

students abounds.

This research will help students realize the effects of being tardy on themselves

and to their studies itself. The results of this study may also help them understand their

usual reasons of tardiness.

Moreover, this study may also be a help to the teachers that have a problem to their

students who are always tardy in class. They could also learn why their students are tardy

in class most of the time and will help them on how to motivate their students so they could

go to school on time.

It is important that this study should be conducted in order for the students to avoid

tardiness and be more competitive in school and not be tardy anymore. This could also help

the school to maintain the reputation.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This study focuses on the tardiness among the Grade 11 students. The researchers

are trying to figure out the reasons and results of tardiness among students, and how will

students prevent this condition. In the following studies, the behavior of the students are

the basis to identify the causes of this problem. The literature becomes the link between

the research proposed and the studies already done.

According to Scott (2016), Disrupted Routines is one of the factors that affects the

student’s tardiness. He said that one of the most important aspects of school is that it is

organized, scheduled, and predictable. The main purpose for being in school is to learn and

that routines are in place precisely to help them focus on that learning. When students are

repeatedly tardy, these routines are disrupted. Children who are often late have trouble

settling in and mastering routines. He said that social criticism has a powerful impact on a

child's feelings about school and his or her ability to be academically successful. When a

child continuously shows up late to class, other students are distracted. Attention is drawn

away from the teacher or assignment and toward the child who has just arrived. Over time,

classmates may begin to criticize this child, affecting how they feel about themselves in

school. During adolescence, children are especially conscious of fitting in and being

accepted by peers. In addition, students who are routinely late at the primary and middle

school levels are more likely to fail in senior school. In many classrooms, particularly at

the primary level, morning routines are critical to daily lessons. Warm-up activities may

introduce topics that will be learned later in the day, or review work offers students an

opportunity to review previously learned skills. And he also said that responsibility, part

of your child's education is learning to be responsible.

They learn to follow schedules, obey rules, complete assignments and keep track of their

materials. Learning responsibility in school is a precursor to functioning in the working

world and attendance is one of the ways children show they can meet their obligations. In

many cases, a child's attendance depends on his parents' ability to help him be on time.

Parents can teach their children organizational techniques that will help them get out of the

house faster, such as packing their bags and laying out their clothes the night before school.

But parents who drive their children must also remember to be punctual and responsible.

According to Lovett, Brooks, (2015), a student may find it difficult to make it to

class on time because of the physical distance between sequential classes. This may be

particularly true of students with a class prior to teacher that meets off-campus. Students

may also experience either chronic or temporary physical impairments that make getting

from class to class challenging. Moloji (2016) said that the emotional status of the child

can be one of the reasons why he is late in school. In relation, supports that missing

academic activities early in the morning affects a child's learning process for the whole

day. Tardiness may also be the result of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and

depression and affects your health Greenwood (2017). Many people sleep deprivation and

it is a real drag on someone’s happiness and health as what Rubin (2014) mentioned in her

article. On the other hand, Helpman (2017) said that the causes of tardiness are ineffective

planning, risking lateness, going off-plan, and lack of motivations for punctuality. Based

on Greenwood (2017) enumerated the causes of lateness namely family demands,

deadlines and overbooking, and culture. He added that tardiness may be a result of another

factor which is simply being disorganized.

5

Another study conducted by Paren (2016) determined the factors affecting students

in their daily routine during school days. The study suggests that always and oftentimes

being tardy in the flag ceremony, in attending classes after recess time in the morning and

afternoon class sessions and during the first period in the afternoon class session are one

of the, most common causes of tardiness. There was an indication that students had disliked

the subject Math and Science. The problem is not about the teacher but about the subject

of the students. Bataineh (2014), also conducted a review study that aimed to review studies

that investigate reasons that are related to lateness behavior and how the students deal with

it. He examined 24 papers and reports reviewed regarding lateness behavior. The related

journal papers and reports on factor associated with students’ lateness behavior and dealing

strategies were downloaded with cut off limit from 1991 to 2013. However, the results of

the study that there were evidence from the reviewed literature in focus with students

lateness behavior. He concluded that dealing with disruptive behavior within the classroom

is listed as one of the most challenging aspects of being a professor. The importance of this

studies is to serve as a guide, give additional information, support and get a possible

answers as to what is the reasons of student’s tardiness.

The researchers conclude that the following studies has its own ideas and important

information about the reasons and results of student’s tardiness. This studies really help the

researchers gather further information about the said topic.
