Katamo Hair Salon is a

Greenwave accredited Business –
Melbourne Council

SU STA IN A BILITY
Salons consume significant amounts of water and electricity in addition to discarding waste
such as metals from colour tubes and used foil, chemicals from leftover hair colour and
product packaging each day. With each visit you are supporting a salon that is committed to
sustainable practices without compromising on the quality of products and service we
provide.

GREEN SELECT
ACCREDITED
As a Salon Select Gold member we meet and exceed the standards of
the Australian Hairdressing Council. In addition to meeting these standards,
we have implemented sustainable practices without compromising the quality of our service or
the products we recommend.
Our efforts are recognised with the Green Select accreditation awarded by the Australian
Hairdressing Council for excellence in green initiatives in the salon environment. Green Select
salons undertake an accreditation process that review processes in recycling, water usage,
energy consumption, environmentally sustainable product usage, composting and
environmental policies.
Our use and association with the organisations below provides insight into why our efforts have
been recognised and accredited

SUSTAINABLE SALONS AUSTRALIA

Sustainable Salons Australia is a comprehensive resource
recovery service designed specifically for the salon environment
to maximise every opportunity to reduce waste.
 This revolutionary resource recovery program is
designed to achieve zero waste, reduce carbon footprint and
implement sustainable work practices that benefit the local
community.
 Your cut off hair will support charitable causes such as
oil spill clean up projects, local community gardens and
charitable wig making services.
 All the proceeds gained from recycling the salon’s metals such as foils, colour tubes, cans etc
will be donated to not for profit community based organisations that do an amazing job helping
people every day.
 Any leftover hair colour will be recycled into new liquids.
 Once our tools reach their end of life they will be broken down and all valuable parts will be re-
purposed.

REFOIL
Refoil is committed to sustainable product development. Their
lifecycle approach ensures the best quality foil with the least impact
on the environment. The technology and infrastructure to make salon
foil solely from recycled aluminium is unfortunately still lacking,
however the benefits below are still achieved by using mainly
recycled aluminium sources.
 Water savings. Recycling saves up to 97% of the water used in refineries to process ore into
alumina. Recycling one kilogram of aluminium saves approximately 233 litres of water.
 Energy savings. Smelting alumina into pure aluminium is an energy-intensive process.
Recycling on the other hand uses only 5% of the energy needed to smelt alumina into pure
aluminium. Recycling one kilogram of aluminium saves approximately 14 kilowatts of energy.
That’s the equivalent to powering a TV for 204 hours.
 Preserves landscapes. Reducing the need to extract bauxite (ore) out of the ground. Recycling
conserves soil integrity, wildlife habitats that are otherwise destroyed in the aluminium
extraction process.
 No landfill. Valuable aluminium is diverted from landfill and stays in the loop for the
manufacture of new products.
 Recycling creates jobs in the collecting and sorting of recyclables.
 Recycling conserves precious natural resources for future generations.

WHO GIVES A CRAP

Funny name with a fantastic humanitarian and environmental mission.
By purchasing the salon toilet tissue from Who Gives a Crap we are
supporting an organisation that manufacture their products from 100% recycled fibres.
To date their environmental efforts have not only reduced the number of freshly cut trees
(30,797) and use of energy (5,922 tonnes) and water (74 million litres), their humanitarian
efforts also see 50% of their profits donated ($428,500 to date) to help sanitation and hygiene
projects to assist the 2.3 billion people across the globe who don’t have access to a toilet.
Poor sanitation causes diarrhoea related diseases that fill over half of the sub-Saharan African
hospital beds and kill 900 children under 5 every day.
Toilets are proven to be a great solution—they provide dignity, health and an improved
quality of life. And in case that wasn’t enough, it’s been shown that a dollar invested in
sanitation yields $5.50 in increased economic prosperity. You too can show support by
purchasing the products here.
