Exercise 5.

3 Offsite vs Onsite

1. Your organization has approximately 10 tb of data and you need to decide if your
organization should have on-site or offsite tape storage
2. Your organization must be able to easily recover data no older than one month, as an
operational requirement
3. Your organization’s further requirement is that recovery operations must resu,e at
minimal levels for all systems within two weeks of a total catastrophe at the data center
4. Decide how your organization should house its backups

Regardless of the size of the business, every business needs a backup system to make sure
they keep their business data secure. This requires a backup strategy to keep all data your
business created or creates in a safe environment. So your business can avoid the loss of
important information in the event of a disaster.

Businesses typically have two choices: onsite and remote (offsite) backup. Onsite backup
requires storing data on a local storage such as hard disk, CDs, tapes, or hard drives. Remote
(off-site) backup is more about storing data on an offsite server that can be accessed via the
internet on the go. This is a mobile option as you can access to data from wherever you are.

If there is a need of storing 10 TB, this would be better to restore with onsite back up and here is
why:

Advantages:

● Quick Access to Data: Onsite backup allows for quicker access to the stored data
without requiring you to have a strong internet/Wi-Fi connection.
● Low Cost: As hard drives are not as expensive as off-site storage units, this would be a
more affordable option.
● Installation: There is no need for installation support for hard drives which makes them
very easy to install and use.

On the other hand, there are some downsides of using on-site storage options such as:

● Security: As onsite storage options are vulnerable to theft or personal damage, they
obtain security concerns. If these storage devices fall into wrong hands, this might cause
a big damage for the users of the company and the reputation of the company overall
(Chan, 2016).

As the further requirement is to keep operational processes as easy and short as possible,
looks like to have on-site storage options rather than using off-site storage options which
requires installation support and involvement of 3rd party data storage providers.
