RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In order to come up with the study results, findings and conclusions, the

following methods and procedures were accurately conducted in order to collect

and gather reliable valid and consisted data’s.

Participants of the study:

The participants of the study are the second year Computer Engineering

students of KALINGA STATE UNIVERSITY. There was one class of second

year COE with 13 girls and 12 boys. In order to get data for the study; all of them

were chosen to answer the questionnaires we prepared.

Instrument:

The research instruments employed to collect data for this study were

questionnaires and class observation while they are answering, and while the

questionnaires were delivered to the twenty five second year COE students, we

start to observe their behavior toward English matters.

Data gathered:

The research was conducted in the classroom of the second year COE

students with the supervision of their instructor at that time during their Technical

and Research Writing subject. While the students answering the questionnaires

some of us ask the question on why they prefer to learn speak English by

Reading, Listening, writing or speaking, and we also asks their own reasons.

Twenty five respondents were given sensory questionnaires to fill up as

they read each item. The data gathered from them through questionnaire were

Analyzed using the descriptive method. The overall evaluated data were carefully

counted by us to determine each student problem toward learning English by

speaking.

Confidence in speaking questionnaire

Griffee (1997) designed “confidence in speaking questionnaire” for

typically universities students. It is one of the first published questionnaires

specific to L2 confidence. Griffee’s91997) confidence construct is the product of

his in-depth inquiry into the self-confidence variables. He shows that his

questionnaire has satisfactory validity and reliability. Griffee (1997) hypothesized

three aspects underlying confidence in speaking English: ability, assurance, and

willing engagement. He defined ability as a “a command grammar, vocabulary,

and pronunciation,” assurance as “a feeling of security and comfort in speaking

English,” and willing engagement as one who is “glad to speak English with

native speakers of English”. His questionnaire is based on these three aspects of

confidence and it fits our research inquiry well, in that it has allowed us

to broadly examine my students’ sense of confidence.
