CONTENTS
1.0.0 Introduction
This manual is written as a general overview of the P S Analytical Sir Galahad II
Software.
It has been designed and written to work with the P S Analytical 10.525 Sir
Galahad II and specific information on the particular instrument being used can
be found in the appropriate User Manual.
Area 2
Area 3
Area 1 Shows the tabs accessible to the user. The main tabs are listed
below:
Minimise Application.
Maximise Application.
Area 3 Is the status bar. This is displayed on all screens of the software
and contains the following information:
Software Status Bar – This is displayed on all screens and contains the
following information:
A B C D E F G
A Date and Time – This displays the current date and time as defined by the computer
B Status – This displays the current status of the software e.g. method being
executed.
C Timer – Used to count down when analysing samples
D Maximise and Minimise Diagnostic Screen – Only used for diagnostics
E Software Information
F Help – Press this button to access the help facility. (If Installed)
G Exit software
If the user presses the Register button the following dialogue box will be
displayed:
Shows how long the user haves left to evaluate the software.
Enter the user’s company name and registration number. This needs to appear
exactly as it does on your licence. Once this information has been accepted the
software is licensed.
This tab is the main tab, it is envisaged that users will mainly be looking at this
screen.
This diagram mimics the status of the Sir Galahad II instrument. From this the
user can see the state of the valves, detector signal, as well as the heating
and cooling cycles.
This section displays graphically the detector signal from the Sir Galahad II
instrument. Here the user can see the peak when a sample is analysed. This
section also shows the instrument gain as well as the baseline and signal
height.
Type – This defines the type of analysis that has been undertaken.
These are summarised below:
Calibration – The result relates to a calibration point.
Sample Volume – The user analysed a sample by using the
sample volume method.
Remote – The user analysed a sample by using the Remote
Method.
Flow Time – The user analysed a sample by using the flow time
method.
Volume – The total sample volume for the sample or calibration point. For
samples this is in litres, for calibration points this is in l.
Units – The units the user has selected to display the results.
Note: Internally the software calculates all the results in pg. absolute.
(pgl -1 = ngm -3)
Date/Time – The date and time that the sample was analysed.
This can be printed by pressing the button or you can view the previous or
next result by pressing the and buttons respectively.
This dialogue box enables the user to enter various sample details.
Name – The name of the sample for example, air, gas etc.
(Free text field)
I.D. – The sample number you have assigned to this sample. This
can be alpha numeric. (Free text field)
Repeat – How many times you want to run this individual sample
(max 10).
The 5 modes of operation are:
1. Flow Time – The user specifies the sample flow rate and how long they
wish to collect the sample for. After the analyse button is pressed the
software counts down from the time specified to zero and then starts the
analysis sequence. The sample volume is calculated from flow rate
multiplied by time.
2. Sample Volume – The user passes a known volume of gas over the
sample trap of the analyser and tells the software the volume of sample
collected.
3. Remote – A gold trap is inserted into the remote port of the analyser. The
user then tells the software the volume of sample that has passed through
the gold trap.
4. 10.515 – Used to run samples when the Sir Galahad II is coupled with a
PSA 10.515 Mercury Pre-concentrator. The user enters volume injected
into 10.515 and mass of blank in picograms.
10.515 Timings:
These timings are only used when coupled to a PSA 10.515 Mercury pre-
concentrator.
These timings should match the timings of the 10.515 pre-concentrator. If timings
do not match the analysis sequence may/could start at the wrong time.
5. Remote Clean – Runs remote mode three times to clean the trap in the
remote port.
The user can use the memo field to write notes on the particular sample.

Analyse in Series – User can use this feature when two sample traps
have been used to collect a sample in series mode. See section 2.2.1
This feature is used to analyse two traps that have been used to sample in
Series Mode using the PSA 10.537D or 10.547 Offline Sampling System.
First Tube Details – User defined, enter Tube ID, Tube Blank mass in
picograms and the number of times the tube will be run. Default is 3 runs.
Second Tube Details – User defined, enter Tube ID, Tube Blank mass in
picograms and the number of times the tube will be run. Default is 3 runs.
User Defined – Enter the date and time of the start and finish of the sampling
period.
User Defined – This is the file name the report will be saved as. (.pdf)
When all fields have been entered click on this Icon to start analysis.
Insert first tube into the remote port then click on to start analysis or
to abort the analysis.
A second prompt asking you to insert the second tube will appear when the
analysis of the first tube is complete. Insert second tube then click on ‘OK’.
A report (.pdf) will be generated and displayed after the second tube has finished
analysis. (Saved reports can be opened by Adobe Acrobat Reader®)
Peak Height – The peak height measured for the Mercury Vapour
injected.
Date/Time – The date and time the calibration point was added.
Here the user inputs the volume (µl) of Mercury vapour they are going to inject
and also the temperature (oC) of the Mercury vapour.
The software then calculates the mass of Mercury in the volume injected:
The user can now inject the Mercury vapour into the analyser and then Click on
the ‘OK’ button. The calibration standard will be run and the point added to the
calibration slope
Note: For more information on calibrating the PSA Sir Galahad II, consult the Sir
Galahad User Manual User (manual part number G525M050).
Deletes the current point from the calibration. The cal point cannot be
recovered.
The method setup page is used to modify the conditions used to run the
individual samples. (The timings on this tab have been factory set and
should not be altered under normal analysis conditions).
Note: When you load a method you will be prompted to ask if you wish to load
the associated calibration. (The associated calibration is the calibration saved
when the method was created).
Save Method – Saves the current method to disk with the name you
specify.
Note: When saving a method you will be prompted to ask if you wish to save an
associated calibration with the method. (The associated calibration is the current
calibration).
Last Modified – The time and date the file was last
modified*.
*Note: These are automatically saved when you click on the ‘save button’.
Method Setup Notes – A text field used to describe the method and its uses.
Note: Gain 1 is the least sensitive, gain 100 is the most sensitive.
Measurement Mode –
i. None – The software will not check the baseline value before analysing
the next sample.
ii. % Signal – The software will wait until baseline returns to within the set %
of the last analysed sample.
iii. Units – The software will wait until the baseline is within xxx units of the
value measured before the peak.
The signal can be smoothed by using the Box Car integration to DAMP the
displayed signal. The number set is the number of points averaged to plot a
single point on the screen. Once an average has been taken, and new readings
are accepted into the integration and the first reading is erased.
Note: Imagine a stream of data entering the software from the detector like so:
10,11,12,13,14,18,30
Continuous mode
Remote mode
Note: The ‘include’ column of the data section will now show “no”.
Note: The include column of the data section will now show “YES”.
Note: This will delete all the results. If you want to save the results follow 3.3.5
“saving results”.
