Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

“Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High School curriculum (SHS) and refers
to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation which Grades
11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the
competencies provided by the school under the supervision of the School Head and the
designated personnel of the Partner. Work Immersion is the counterpart of the internship
programs in the tertiary level.”, (Marilou B. Lozada, 2017). Work Immersion establishes the
appropriate job to the students who gained benefits in the said program. “In the K to 12 basic
education curriculum, a Senior High School student has to undergo Work Immersion in an
industry that directly relates to the student’s postsecondary goal. Through this, the students are
exposed to become familiar with work-related environment of their field of specialization in
order to enhance their competence and to prepare them to meet the needs and challenges of
employment.” (Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. V, 2018)

According to The Asia Foundation (2018), “In the Philippines, youth unemployment
hampers meaningful economic development. The sector’s lack of knowledge, skills, and work
experience puts them at a disadvantage. One way to address this is through the Department of
Education’s Senior High School (SHS) program, ushered by the K-12 education reform. One of
its components, the work immersion program, provides students “real workplace” experience,
giving students a set of technical-vocational and livelihood skills that can help them make more
informed career choices and improve their employment prospects.” The work immersion is made
to train the Grade 12 students to their possible jobs in their chosen fields.

Nowadays, lacking knowledge and experience about their chosen field will affect their
performance in their future jobs. Being well-trained is essential and a helpful way to prevent
mistakes and be able to properly execute tasks entrusted to an individual that’s why it is very
important to undergo work immersion. Many of the students are not familiar to the consequences
of their chosen tracks. Some students wanted to graduate Senior High School to get a job, some
are willing to take the risk – to experience a new chapter of their lives – work immersion.
Students are too attached to the technologies that they forget to face the real world, to experience
the real work of an individual.

This qualitative research aims to provide a deep understanding about the importance and
benefits of work immersion not only for the grade 12 students who are going to experience it but
also for the future researchers, for the parents of the students who will experience work
immersion and especially in the community. It also aims to give emphasis to the importance of
work immersion in different aspects.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The type of approach used in this research is qualitative approach that enables the
researchers to make more detailed investigation on individuals’ experienced phenomenon cases.
This qualitative research is a phenomenological type that is exclusive for grade 12 students of
Bulacan Standard Academy, batch 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. The research sample is composed
of twenty-nine (29) respondents from grade 12 students and former grade 12 students who
graduated in Bulacan Standard Academy. The primary data gathering method used was interview
to determine how work immersion molds them through engaging to a particular work. The
interview questions only tackle how work immersion familiarized and trained grade 12 students.
One of the ways used in this study is observation which also includes taking down notes based
on what the researchers discover and notice during the work immersion of the grade 12 students.

Since that work immersion started last 2017, the references in the related literature are
few and the gathered information in chapter 2 are the strongest that would support the study. In
foreign literature, the researchers looked for something that is almost the same with work
immersion which is the work-based experience that is a requirement in some foreign countries in
order to move up.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

This chapter primarily presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-
depth search done by the researchers. The literature and studies cited in this chapter tackle the
significance and benefits of work immersion to all grade 12 students from both local and foreign.
Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and
similar to the present study.

Local

Filipinos have been looking for a job whether it will suit to them or not. Nowadays, it is
not easy for some Filipino’s to find a decent and stable job due to lack of knowledge and skills in
connection with the jobs they are about to take. However, students can easily find a job because
they undergone work immersion.

Grade 12 Senior High School graduates are job-ready due to the work immersion
program included in their curriculum, the Department of Education (DepEd) said. The first batch
of Grade 12 students are expected to graduate in March, completing the K to 12 Basic Education
Program. The department made the statement following the concern of the Philippine Chamber
of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) on the minimum number of training hours required from SHS
graduates. (Republic of the Philippine News Agency, 2018)

Senior High School (SHS) students are now given the chance to enhance their skills in
their respective academic track through the K to 12 Work Immersion Program as a means to

are just fresh graduates from high school. (retrieved, https://www.pressreader.com/, 2018)

All Work Immersion Program exposures shall observe strict compliance of all Philippine
Laws and other Guidelines and Orders issued by proper government agencies to ensure that the
exposure program would protect the interest and welfare of the students engaged in Immersion
Work Program. (Mrs. Melanie I. Carlos, 2018)

Based on DepEd Order (2018) no. 30 series 2017 or the Guidelines for Work Immersion,
students are required a minimum of 80 hours of work immersion. The agency also pointed out
that under the law, someone below 18 but older than 15 years old must spend maximum of 40
hours per week and no more than 8 hours per day during work immersion.

Generally, work immersion is advantageous to students who want to experience and learn
more about the life of being employed. It prepares them to the bigger world after graduation and
makes them equipped with relevant skills. It also teaches a lot of valuable lessons that they
cannot get inside the classroom. One example is having to work in a team and interacting with
real managers and bosses. This experience can help the trainability level of a student. It can also
give a little push on the assertiveness and confidence of an individual. Accomplishing a task that
they know has a real impact on the company will boost their self-esteem as a team player. There

are a lot of advantages in work immersion, but some people also have reservations on this
program. One major point is safety. (retrieved, https;//www.brainly.ph/)

In addition to the statement above, one of the advantages of work immersion is that this
serves as the internship program of the students who are soon will be stepping up in college.
Internship program is considered to be one of the most effective ways to enhance students’ skills
in their chosen field of specialization. The said learning experience that the students can get from
it which can range from 80-320 hours will surely enable and help students as they familiarize
themselves with the workplace thus experience workplace simulation and apply their
competencies in areas of specialization. (retrieved, https://www.pressreader.com/, 2018)

According to Ivy A. Lopez (2018), Administrative Assistant II, the importance of work
immersion must be seen as vital point of giving students a venue to improve them through
experiencing the real stuff on-hand. This is the very highlight of the senior high school
program; it helps students to acquire knowledge and experience that can help them grow as
professional individuals.

“This work immersion provides learners with opportunities to learn about the workplace,
as well as the authentic work environment. Work Immersion is a key feature in the Senior High
School program. Guidelines have been formulated based on the experiences of techvoc schools,”
said Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Bianito Dagatan (2018).

In addition, the researchers said that students could enhance their skills and experience
once they undergo Work Immersion. It will also develop their behaviour and attitude particularly
their confidence. With the help of Work Immersion, the student can also identify which track or
career should she or he will take. They can also experience their possible jobs in the future in
their chosen field. This program orients every grade 12 students about their possible jobs when
they get a job on their own.

“Work immersion may be conducted in different ways and time frame as needed by the
students. This provides them the opportunity to be familiar with the work environment, and
enable them to apply their competencies in areas of specialization in these environments,”
DepEd said (2018).

Moreover, work immersion aims to expose the students to the harsh realities of
environment in a workplace. This exposure also aims to develop and enhance the work ethics
and habits of senior high school students. It would also serve as an assessment tool on the
affectivity of the module designed for the purpose.

According to Resty C. Samosa, a grade 12 student, state that work immersion isn’t just
work at all. It is patience; to wait for the task that will be given to a student, to resist the
temptation to put out their phone, to render themselves from being naughty during the hours of
work, to stay focused throughout the day, to be receptive in the circulation of work, to be willing
to work with enthusiasm and to also make themselves busy when they have nothing to do. This
program offered a multitude of values for them students like in real offices they’ve also formed
relationship together as they say a team can propagate more when they stand close to each other.

Work Immersion helps students develop their deep understanding about the abilities and
skills of a person once he or she enters the real workplace. This program serves as the training
ground for every grade 12 students. They can also develop their expertise that would help them
as they face the new chapter of their lives after undergoing work immersion – being a college
student.

Foreign

Work immersion is one of the best training methods since it well organized and
conducted in a place where students will become productive and we'll developed. It exposes
them to the actual work related to their course. It is very beneficial to those students who can't
finish college. Work immersion gives students an opportunity to expose themselves to real life
work and get to be a part of it and know what it is like in their field of work.

According to Morgan State University, recent surveys indicate that more and more public
and private organizations are recognizing the long-term advantages of supporting work
experiences for college students. Organizations find that such programs offer an excellent
opportunity to evaluate candidates for potential full-time positions while these candidates
accomplish valuable tasks that might otherwise go undone. Additionally, organizations have
found that these programs enhance their corporate image on the college campus and decrease
recruiting expenses while yielding more productive and dedicated employees. Educational
institutions find that students with career-related work experiences perform better academically,
have higher retention rates, and compete better for jobs after graduation.

The statement above clearly states that work-based experience was really beneficial to all
students. Work-based experience is similar to work immersion because they both provide “real-
work” experience to students.

Work-based learning experiences is an educational approach or instructional

methodology that uses the workplace or real work to provide students with the knowledge and
skills that will help them connect school experiences to real-life work activities and future career
opportunities. It is essential that direct employer or community involvement be a component of
the WBL to ensure in-depth student engagement. These opportunities are meant to engage,
motivate and augment the learning process. These WBL opportunities can be done in
conjunction with private, for-profit, public or non-profit businesses in your community and/or
through web-based resources. In addition, work-based learning requires in-depth engagement of
youth and an evaluation of acquired work relevant skills. (retrieved, http://www.wintac.org)

Human resource development and training as the process of facilitating organizational

learning and performance is no longer luxury but a necessity since it is used to tap the innate
ability and potential of human resources. Training is used as a tool by management to improve
performance by reducing the gap between expectation and achievement. (Anonymous, 2014)

The apt definition for a ‘work experience‘ is it is a period of work done in a particular
organization or anything own from which learning can be achieved. There are different types of
work experience resume according to the various factors like time period, the role you played.
Most common work experience categories are:

Vacation work experience:

This type of work experience is where most students get to have during the vacation.
Here the person would be employed for a short span of a few months. Most of the freshers are
expected to these type of work experience.

Voluntary work experience:

This type of work experience is where the person might not get paid for the job role
player but he gets to know the work. This type of work experience is generally common between
students as they do it as a part of project or internships.

This is an added advantage to list in the work experience. (retrieved,

Having a work experience is a big advantage not only to the job seeker but also to the
recruiter in many ways possible. In the present scenario, having a good degree, many
certifications will not help as much a work experience can do to you. Nowadays, all employers
have started to seek a person who has an on-hand experience for the job role. They believe a
person becomes more skilled once he is exposed to real-life work. Work experience provides job
seeker many benefits, giving you skills and a good exposure that will allow a person to stand out
to potential employers as well as guiding them to choose the right sector to work in. Be it a part-
time or a full-time work immersion, an experience can gain you many benefits and make you
more exposed to the good talented opportunities around you. (retrieved,

Research Design

The type of Qualitative Research used is Phenomenological Study. Phenomenology is a

qualitative research method that is used to describe how human beings experience a certain
phenomenon. A phenomenological study attempts to set aside biases and preconceived
assumptions about human experiences, feelings, and responses to a particular situation (Center
for Innovation in Research and Teaching). The researchers are looking for the commonalities
that were experienced by the samples or the respondents who undergone work immersion.

In Phenomenological Study, it helps the researchers to answer the research problem

through gathering data. Since the questions are given to the students, the researchers are able to
know their point of view since they shared the same phenomenon happens in work immersion.

Interview is one of the characteristics that the researcher used in the study. The
researchers had a face-to-face interview with the respondents and observe on how they behave
during their work immersion that makes it clear to the researchers on what are the aspects and
attributes that the respondents shared and the things that they are the same with.

Data Collection Techniques

Data collection is a process in gathering information that is composed of interview,

observation, information and audio visual materials to find answers to the problem, test the
assumption and evaluate the outcomes.

In an interview, the researchers conduct a conversation together with the students that
aims to know their experience and discuss on what they have done in participating work
immersion. It also gives a high personalize data by determining the factors that they might
encounter in their work immersion. The purpose of an interview is to formulate answers for the
questions and give a complete description analysis to the study.

In an observation, the collection of data is done by approaching the students and observe
them on how they accomplish and participate in work immersion. It directly gathers the data
according to what the students experienced in their work immersion.

In an audio visual, the researcher collects the data and information through the use of
video and voice records which are part of the interview to the respondents. It is important for the
researchers because it serves as an evidence that supports the study.

In documentation, the pictures and photos that the researcher gathered from the
respondents are proofs or the evidences that they undergone wok immersion. It also helps the
researchers to know the actions of the respondents during their work immersion.

Research Instrumentation

The type of questionnaires used is a researcher-made questionnaire that is based on the

personal views of grade 12 and first year college students about their experience in work
immersion. The researchers conducted interviews to know the experience of the grade 12 and
graduate students who undergone work immersion, an observation that helps to evaluate the

skills and characteristics developed in their work immersion and a documentation that deals with
informative basis to the research.

The questionnaires are formulated in semi-structured that proposed the experience of

those Grade 12 students who undergone work immersion. Allowing the questionnaire to gather
data and establish explanations regarding with work immersion. It states the collection of data
that aim to recognize the impact of work immersion to Grade 12 students and on how it
developed their characteristics as students that serve as their reference before entering college.
The draft of questionnaire was drawn out based on the researchers, previous study about work
immersion and related literature in the study.

In addition, the instrument is authorized to obtain valid responses of the students. In

semi-structured question, it allows the respondents to answer by their own perspective and it was
related to the topic. In the end, the instrument was validated by the consultant and also by the
researchers.

Research Informants/Samples

In gathering the data, the respondents are exactly twenty-nine persons composed of nine
students from Grade 12-ABM, six students from Grade 12-ICT, and fourteen first-year college
students graduated in Bulacan Standard Academy batch 2017-2018 who experienced work
immersion. 21 of the respondents are female and the remaining 7 are male. 9 of the informants
are 17 years of age from the respondents of the Grade 12 students, 12 are the 18 years old, and 8
are the 19 year-old respondents who graduated Senior High School in Bulacan Standard
Academy. The selected students already had their work immersion. They can discuss the
happenings during work immersion and also have the capability of answering the survey form
questionnaires according to their personal and direct experience on working together with their
classmates, facilitators, and employers. In starting formal consultation, the researchers inform
first the teachers and give a permission letters for the respondents. The formulated questions are

the basis of the researchers to gather information and aim data throughout what they have
experienced during work immersion. This study aims to know their interaction with other people
and deep involvement in the working environment. This will be an advantage for a researchers
on getting them.

The researchers divided the students from both strands which are the Grade 12-ABM and
Grade 12-ICT into halves, each group would ask as a whole but they have to answer
individually. The researchers also interview the former students of Bulacan Standard Academy
through meeting them personally or set a place to answer the survey questionnaires and also for
the interview. All the interviewees have to be videoed also includes recording of voices and
taking pictures compiled as a documentation to make the evidence valid.

Pilot Test

In the first trial of getting information, the researchers are tasked to give a survey form
questionnaire to the Grade 12 and first year college students, then after they answered the survey
form, the researcher told each of the respondents that they have to be interviewed because this
will serve as an additional information in the study. The grade 12 students are divided into two
groups composing of five students in each group and their answers are considered as a whole
while the first year college students was individually interviewed. The questions given from both
levels were quite different and somehow connected because these questions pertains on what
they have experience and encounter during the first run of work immersion. The most important
question is about their personal opinion on how work immersion becomes more beneficial to
them.

As the researchers kept on looking for an answer, the respondents gave their honest
response to the researchers. As the questions get personal, the respondents answers
wholeheartedly, without hesitation. The respondents keep on answering what the researchers ask
to them.

Data Analysis

The researchers used four methods to gather data. These methods are observation,
interviews, documentation, and audio-visuals. These methods help the researchers to gather
information in order to answer the research problem. The collected data were analysed.

The analysed data states that work immersion is beneficial to some students particularly
to graduate students who are now in college. The work immersion is beneficial to them
especially when it comes to interacting with the people around them. It enhance their
communication skills which helps them to have a good relationship towards others. It also helps
them to improve their skills through performing different task. Some of the respondents says that
they are not able to use their experience in work immersion in college because their experience is
not totally related to the courses they took.

Most of the students state that they become well-rounded because they undergone work
immersion. Work immersion also helps them to build their confidence and become self-
dependent. Through the help of different instruments, the researchers are able to gather
information that will help them to determine how work immersion molds Grade 12 students.

Ethical Consideration

In conducting an interview, the researchers made a letter for the respondents showing the
phenomenological study about their experience as they undergone their work immersion. The

researchers make sure that the gathered information will be safe and confidential between the
researcher and the respondents. The researcher chose the samples that fit to the study. The
samples are being informed by the researchers. The researchers gave a letter to the respondents
with formality as the researchers approached them. After giving the letter, the researchers made
sure that the chosen respondents are able to cooperate in the study. The researchers made sure
that the gathered data is secured through keeping the information by not opening the topic and
evidences to the people who are not involved in the study. The evidences such as letters, survey
form questionnaires, videos and voice records are securely compiled in a device and case
storage.

The researchers are also hoping for the positive response from the participants regarding
to this matter. It also stated that their time and effort would be much appreciated by the
researchers.

Researchers’ Position

Based on the collection of data, the researchers aim to know the events happened to the
work immersion with the participation of the respondents which is the Grade 12 students. The
researchers are able to know the concrete experience of those Grade 12 students who undergone
in work immersion. The data that the researcher gathered has been clarified by some instruments
used. It is composed of observation, interview, audio-visual materials, and documentation. The
researchers formulated the concepts on which the researcher can explore to know the
characteristics of each students who experienced work immersion. The researchers observe the
students in their work immersion and noticed that every one of them is assigned to do different
tasks according to their manager or head officers. Before the students undergone work

things they learned in their work immersion can be applied in the real life situation and their
daily life basis.

Experience

One of the factors the respondents have the same is the experience. Experience is “The
process of getting knowledge or skill that is obtained from doing, seeing, feeling things, or
something that happens.”(Cambridge University Press 2019). The Grade 12 students who

build up their characteristics especially their self-confidence and socializing with others. And
also it will help them to know how to handle the situation once they encounter problems in their
work place. For every experience, there is always a lesson. Experience is one of the processes in
application of the things they learned in terms of what they have been through in their work
immersion.

Based to the data gathered, experience can boost the person’s confidence because they
had an interaction with other people and they can face them alone especially that they experience
work immersion. Experience can be learned in every situation they are in.

Skills

Skills is the main aspect that every senior student must develop through work immersion.
The work immersion assists them as they continuously grow in the working field which is part of
the examination training which is done by the means of working. Working is the process by
which not only the skills are enhanced but to build the character by knowing yourself and to
involve yourself with others. Skills need a deep involvement with the environment so that skills
are acquired in the process of application and hands-on activity.

According to sample no. 7, “Characteristics is one of the skills developed during work
immersion but still it depends to the person if he or she is able to build her characteristics. Work
immersion helps me to not just only relax in the working hours and look on what is everybody
doing. If the people around me are working, then, I must be working too. On the last day of our
immersion, we are starting to pack up our things together with some of my classmates and
decided to go home. One of the staffs of the company reproach us because of the task assigned to
us which is not yet done. It is the reason why we must take the immersion seriously. We don’t
have to be chilled where you stay in one place, looking around, and hiding from anybody who
might be discouraged you to do the same thing.”

The researchers agree that the Grade 12 students are responsible for building up his
characteristics but their training ground also influences on how Grade 12 students are totally
being molded during work immersion.

Based on sample no. 10, she stated that “In order to become the good version of yourself,

assigned to me.” It indicates that this sample’s work immersion is aligned to her chosen course in
college that’s why it is helpful for her to face the real work situation.

According to sample no. 10, “My course is related to what I experienced in work immersion,
until now, the professors are teaching us about the tax, laws, so we can apply it in our work.
They also give us an idea to what we will experience in our work to the future.” The sample
stated that the course she took is related to her course in college in term of subjects.

In contrary to the given statement above, sample no. 12 stated that, “My work immersion is not
related to the course I have taken in college. Since I took BS Marine Transportation, our school
coordinators did not find an immersion for the students who wants to be a Seaman, instead, they
made us choose what kind of work immersion we want to be in. Beddings is what I experienced
in my work immersion since it is somehow related to my course.” It states that the respondent’s
experience is not related to what he had taken in college. Additional to what sample no. 12 said,
sample no. 13 stated that, “I worked at Pizza Hut as a barker, my task is to let the customers
come to our store. But the course I took in college is BS Psychology so it is not related to the
work immersion I experienced.”

The work immersion of the graduated respondents is related to what they have taken in
their college, since it will also help them to be familiar to the work place and the job they are
about to face in the near future. There are only few who stated that their work immersion is not
related to what they have taken in their college.

Patience

any task to do. In addition to the statements above, sample no. 10 stated that, “For me, work
immersion develop my patience when it comes to work because there comes a time that tasks are
full blown up or overload so in order to make it done, you should patiently do and be
responsible. Because not all things are easy to achieve or to be done, there must be a
determination.” This sample indicates that was tested in terms of many task that was given to
her, but she had enough patience and determination to accept those tasks and finish all of them
on time.

According to sample no. 11 “It develops my patience for those patients who reject me and also
have a bad attitude.” The sample indicates that her patience was tested because of the
experiences she had in her work place because of the people that surrounds her. “Work
immersion developed my patience by waiting to learn because it is not so fast to learn, we should
wait for it. We should wait to learn more,” stated by sample no. 26. It shows that in able to learn
new things about the work they are going to do, there must be patience in waiting because it take
a lot of time to learn.

Patience plays a big role in every respondent’s life because all the challenges are being
thrown to them and there must be patience in each and every one of them to be able to finish
their task in their work place on time. All the tasks were a test on how they are going to handle
the situation when their schedule is full and they need to have patience and accept those task
without negativities in their mind because it won’t be done on time if they are going to complain
about their tasks. Patience is showing a good moral in every situation that may be good or not.

Responsibility

Responsibilities are the things that every people keep. They are being accountable with it.
Most of them are students who are obligated to set an accomplishment in all their task,
commands, and duties assigned to them. Responsibility is not just to do something, as a
researcher, student, children, or what position do you stand, as a person you must learn from
what you are doing because taking responsibility of being responsible with everything.

In an interview, Sample no. 7 states that “Yes we have a lot of responsibility out their
including time management because we have to follow through on what we missed in school
during our work immersion. Yes some of our teacher give us incentives like for example we are
exempted to this and so and so forth but we still need to pass all the activities that we have to
finish.”

According to Sample 10, “It is really hard for me to accomplish all my responsibilities
because I have to think about my task at home, at school, and especially in work immersion. I
have to balance my time and eliminate my free time on my time schedule because I also have to
follow through all what I’ve missed in school. Relaxing is highly avoided because I may not
accomplish something if I sit there, daydreaming or even sleep.”

Time is the twin sister of responsibility because time takes it place for accomplishing all
those. If a student needs to be careful on doing his-in general responsibility he must also be
careful and watch out of his time. Balance is the middle sister of responsibility because if a
student needs to be careful and watch out for the time, he must also be equal or fair with all his
task and duties. If a student accomplishes one he must need to accomplish others. And lastly
their younger sister, organized. A student must be organized where he must put all his task in his
daily schedule to remind him that he must be able to make things done.

ways, a person or a student may significantly boost the level of one's confidence in facing the
challenges that may arrive.

Confidence is vital to everyone. If the level of this falls down, one may become aloof.
But if the level goes up, one may do greater things than before. Keeping this up will surely make

must continuously work without getting interrupted in such contrary which can result to their
downfall. Having persistence while working is an advantage for the students that molds their
character to work, move, or even communicate appropriately without being disturb in such
hardships.

As the researcher seeks for an answer, the answer itself are already given to the
