HOMEOSTASIS IN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

(ROLEPLAY)

Thrixie: Loveeeee!

Angel: I want you to take a minute to think about the last thing you eat, what made you decide to eat it? It was likely your hunger but what was it that
caused your hunger in the first place?

Thrixie: There are 2 parts of the hypothalamus in your brain that control your hunger: APPETITE CENTER AND SATIETY CENTER.

Appetite center- controlled by our two hunger hormones: LEPTIN and GHRELIN.

Leptin- made up of fat cells and decreased your appetite.

Ghrelin- increases your appetite and helps control your body weight.

 If you weigh less, your leptin levels will be higher as your body tries to support itself but if you weigh more, your leptin levels will be lower
as your body tries to balance itself out.
 Once your leptin levels have determined your desire for food and the food has entered your body, that’s where the digestive system really
comes into play.

ANGEL (food): Wazzap fellas! I am the rice you eat everyday but just call me “Foody-lami”. Today, I am going to have an educational trip. Muadto ko
sa sulod sa lawas sa tawo to explore kung maunsa ang mga pagkaon like me pag kan-on na sa tawo, wanna try? (Grrrr HAHAHA). Naa tay 9 stations
na agian. So, fasten your seatbelts coz we are about to take off! Chooo! Chooo! Chaga-chaga chooo chooo!

THRIXIE (mouth): Welcome to Station 1, the MOUTH. (Raaaawr HAHAHA!). And I want you to meet my kaberks namely: Teeth, Tongue (taste buds)
and Saliva. Ako kang kan on, be ready kay medyo sakit sakit ni. (AAAAAAHHHHH GULP!)

*nakaon nako, while chewing* Makita nimo ang mu-grind nimo which is ang mga teeth together with the saliva, an enzyme nga makapahumok nimo
ug mutabang sa pag chew nako nimo and since carbohydrate man ka, Amylase na enzyme muy mukuyog ug mutabang nimo. Before I forgot, I’ve got
something in my tongue and these are my taste buds na maoy muhelp ug identify kung unsay lami nimo, lami ba ka? pait baka? aslom paba kas ilok
sa akong amiga? Or parat pas dagat? (HAHAHAHA) daghang salamat sa pag bisita. Goodluck! Let the peristalsis push you to your next station.

ANGEL: Thank youuuuu! Choooo! Choooo!

Interesting fact: Some people have difficulty in chewing and swallowing food because of the poor state of their teeth or because they have a
very dry mouth that doesn’t produce saliva. Some people gave difficulty in swallowing because of problems at the back of the mouth cavity
such as weakness of the swallowing muscles.

ANGEL: Announcement to all the passengers in Foody-lami trip to please stay awake to see the beauty of the process and we are about to
passthrough in the esophagus, enjoooy! Chooo! Chooo!

MARRIAH (esophagus): Helloooo Fellas! The tube that connects the mouth to the stomach and it is where muscle contractions in this part of the
digestive system push food gently down to the stomach with no enzyme involved is meeeee, the Oesophagus! Thanks for passing by, Bon Voyage!

Interesting Fact: There is a little valve between the oesophagus and the stomach called the “lower oesophageal valve”. It prevents reflux
(backwards movement) of acid and food back up into the oesophagus.

ANGEL: Choooo! Choooo!

JURRY (the stomach): Welcome to your next stop pasaheros! I am the stomach and I love warm hugs. (halog halog) diri sa stomach mahitabo ang
second digestion. I can produce acids that can kill bacteria which can be swallowed in the food or saliva. My thick muscular walls contract to break
up solid food and mix solids, liquids, stomach acid and saliva in order to aid digestion. I also make substances which help absorb ion and vitamins.
How amazing I am, right?

Interesting fact: The stomach has gastric gland which produces gastric juice and these juice contains two enzymes. One of these enzymes known as
pepsin or pepsinogen which breakdown proteins into peptides and the other enzyme secreted is gastric lipase which is used to break down certain
lipids although it does not break all the lipids the food that is now present.

MARRIAH: Fun facts! The food that is present in the stomach in now called Kind. Hi Kind!

ANGEL: WOAH, SANA ALL AMAZING. Thank you Mr, stomach. And now were heading to next station which is the duodenum. Wew! Feeling nako
rocky road ni sya dire kaya good luck sa akoa. Choooo! Choooo!.

JAH (Duodenum): Psssst! Hello thereeee Fellas! I am the Duodenum, the first part of the small intestines. I received two digestive enzymes, bile
from the liver and enzymes from the pancreas through small ducts or tubes.

MARRIAH: Welcome to the liver!
bile through bile duct. Continue exploring pasaheros! Yipeeee diyaaaap!

Interesting fact: After the bile duct happen pancreatic juice is secreted from the pancreas.

ANGEL: wow! How truly amazing! Let’s go to the next station which is the Pancreas.
THRIXIE: Bonjour mi Amigos and Amigas! Pancreas here and welcome to my place! Ako diay may gahimo ug mga enzymes in which mag produce ko
ug PANCREATIC AMYLASE which breaks the food down into digestible particles.
blood sugar. Naa pud koy pancreatic lipase nga mag-digest sa mga lipids like triglycerides. Nag contain pud siya ug enzyme named trypsin agende.

JAH: fun fact! 1 didn’t you know nga ang trypsin agenda mupunta sa small intestine mahimo siyang trypsin which acts on protein converting them
into polypeptides? Now you know.

ANGEL: Sit back, relax and chill pasaheros, the journey isn’t over yet. Stay awake! Choooo! Chooo!

MARRIAH: I am the small intestine. Mag secrete ko ug enzymes nga peptidase which digest the peptides ug amylase nga mag break down sa circo’s
maltose and lactose into monosaccharides . ako pud may mag break down sa lipids into fatty acids and glycerol with intestinal lipase neutron.
Tanang mga food nga unwanted goes to the large intestine.

ANGEL: thank you. Hala ka katunga nalay mahabilin nako. Muadto nako sa next station which is the large intestine.

THRIXIE: hi ako si large intestine, ang mudawat sa mga unwanted waste where water is absorbed and the remaining waste will be secreted in the
colon (or also known as the large intestines)

JURRY: (turned into feces) I am now the product of the digestive system.

HOMEOSTASIS IN PLANTS

 Didn’t you know na magremove ug waste ang mga plants as a part of their homeostasis? Just like us humans na mag release tag waste kay
Karon among
 Magremove sila ug waste pigments by accumulating it in the vacuoles of aging leaf cells. The leaves nga nahulog, eventually mani nato ang
pagremove sa waste material through abscission.
 Another example is kanang sticky fluid that oozed out from the bark of the trees, Tagok gihapon na siya.
 Plants also stored their waste in their fruits like in the apple malic acid is the waste and in lemon citric acid is also the waste.
 Out from those stated waste there are also some waste released by the plants that are useful to humans like latex and resins. Resins is for
painting varnishing and latex is for clothing or making gloves.
