INDONESIAN LANGUAGE FOR BEGINNERS:


AN INTENSIVE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM
60 hours of class instruction

I. THE PROGRAM

1. In-class Indonesian Language Program


The Indonesian Language for Beginners program involves two hours
instruction per day, four meetings per week for 7.5 weeks. The course
constitutes 60 hours of Indonesian language training in total.
2. Excursions
Assisted by two BIPA instructors, the participants will have the opportunity to
be more familiar with Indonesian cultures and to interact with the locals. The
excursions are scheduled on Saturdays to the following sites:
a. Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (transportation provided by BIPA Program).
b. Pelabuhan Sunda Kelapa, Museum Wayang (transportation provided by
BIPA Program).
c. Sindang Barang, Bogor (by public train and car).
d. Saung Ujo, Bandung (transportation provided by BIPA Program).

II. COURSE COMPONENTS AND DISTRIBUTION

The course emphasizes productive skills, but also includes entry-level written
Indonesian instruction. The reading skills enhancement is integrated within the
speaking, listening and writing skills. The sixty teacher-contact-hours are divided
as follows:

Writing 10 hours

Total 60 hours

III. COURSE OBJECTIVES

This Indonesian Language Program is designed for beginners to prepare them to


be able to communicate well in formal Indonesian in simple conversations within
common topics. The authentic material used in the course will expose the
participants to daily situation commonly happen within Indonesian environment. In
addition to language learning, the participants will be introduced to some cultural
aspects of Indonesian society through an excursion program.

By the end of the program, the participants are expected to have acquired a basic
competence in the following language skills:

Speaking
The participants should be able to communicate orally, that is to understand and
respond to questions within common daily topics and to participate in simple
conversations.

Listening
ƒ The participants should be able to extract specific information from short listening
passages;
ƒ The participants should be able to understand conversations with native speakers
of Indonesian, especially those of Jakarta residents, talking about daily matters.

Writing
The participants should be able to write simple written messages.

In addition to the language skills, the participants will also be introduced to cultural
matters, such as courtesy in asking and giving instruction, as well as the routines
and lifestyle of Indonesian society.

The following is the suggested topic to be discussed in the class:


ƒ Introductions, greetings, and leave-takings
ƒ Personal Information: finding and giving information about one’s and other
people’s personal information;
ƒ Going Shopping: asking for prices, asking questions about products, bargaining;
ƒ Asking and Giving Directions to Public Places;
ƒ Going to the Doctor: registering, talking about body parts and illnesses and
symptoms, asking for advice.

IV. METHODOLOGY

BIPA Program encourages the use of direct approach so that the participants will be
able to immediately use the Indonesian language and promptly develop their
competence in the language. The class instructions are given through simulation of
situations, supported by authentic visual aids to specially design to facilitate
beginning learners.

V. INSTRUCTORS

The instructors of the program consist of tutors with significant experience in teaching
Indonesian language to non-native speakers at the Faculty of Humanities, the
University of Indonesia.

VI. MATERIALS

The course materials are developed and written by the material development
department of BIPA Program, the Faculty of Humanities, the University of Indonesia.
