The Teacher and the Community

I. Introduction

"Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what

counts is best.”
~ Bob Talber

The teacher teaches to fulfill the needs of the learners and help
them to become better member of the community. Teacher will learn and
explore more things so that they will be able to teach this to the learner.
The teacher must be aware of the problem in the school so that they will
be able to share their ideas and effort on how they will help.

The role of the teacher in the community is very important. They

should lead the parent on how they will solve the problem inside and
outside of the school. There should be a parent meeting, so that can share
their suggestions or opinion on the problem. Parent must be aware of this
problem so that they will give the needs of every learner and for the
improvement of the school. So that it will be conducive for learning.

The barangay officers, especially the barangay captain should do

something to solve these problems. And help it to implement some
projects for the improvement. They can ask for donations for the people in
the community to support the implementation of the said project.

The principal must cooperate on this problem, by giving meetings to

the teachers and the other school staff and talk on how they can solve the
problems. And fulfill the needs of the school, for the learners to use and
have a well conducive school.

There should be a cooperation and unity between inside and

outside of the community to help the community be a better place and
make the give satisfaction to all the members of the community. Meetings,
donations and cooperation are the best thing to do to have a better
community.

I. Results of the Interview

In my interview in Clemendes Elementary School I realized that

parents, school staff and barangay officers have participate for the
improvement of their community. They were conducting a meeting among
parents and teachers to solve the problem. The principal were asking for
donations, so that all the learners will be able to have their books and
computers in helping for their learning.

I had interview three parents, and I ask them what are their
participation in doing thing for the improvement of the school like facilities
and others. Rowena Manabat, Marianne Tanglaw and Lorena Reyes were
parents in the school, they said that they were joining the parents
meetings and share if they were ask to pay for making a new projects like
having a cabinet for the room of their children. They also help in cleaning
the rooms instead of the learners so that the time will not be wasted and
continue for the discussion inside the classroom.

I also interview two teachers they are Mrs. Erlinda Herrera and Mr.
Jose Timbol. Mrs. Herrera said that they were, ask to conduct different
meetings for the improvement of the school and implement some projects
outside the community such as trash cans, so that they will prevent
cleanliness outside the school. Meetings for the parents, on how they will
improve the classroom, such as repairing or making some tables and
chairs, build cabinets for the books of the learners, and others.

She said that this is very helpful in making classroom more

conducive for learning. For Mr. Timbol he also answer the same as what
Mrs. Herrera said, but he added that all the teachers were required to
attend meeting for the improvement for the facilities of the school or
something that they can add like books and computers. They were asking
for donation to fulfill this.

II. Analysis

In my analysis for the three parents, it is good thing to know that

they were participating for the improvement of the school. Because some
parents don’t have time to go to the school and don’t have any concern.
For me parents are one the most important member of the community.
They can give opinions and share their ideas on the implementation for
the plan. They will do anything to make learning more interesting for their
children.

For the Mrs. Herrera statement she said that she conducts parents
meeting for the improvement of the classroom. I think there the teacher
and parents must be aware of their status, because some of the parents in
that school don’t have much many to contribute for the funds, they should
be aware and give importance on it. In my suggestion, they should talk not
force other parents to pay for the funds.
There should be volunteers on other parents. For Mr. Timbol’s
statement, he said that donations are being asks for the fulfillment of the
needs of the school. It good to know that they were asking for donations
outside the school, parents are not force to pay for this. Because most of
the parents in the school are not well of.

III. Conclusion

The role of the school in the community is to help people fulfill their
basic needs. The basic academic needs of children’s and teen-agers.
Much of the experiences strengthen performance and accomplishments in
academics areas of learning. Adults participate in many learning activities
during school day and obtain service through the schools that helps them
fulfill their needs. It also takes the lead in involving children, youth, and
adults in programs that help to solve community problems. When
individual learning needs of all age groups are fulfilled and when through
united effort community problems are solved, community development will
take place on many fronts.

And the role of the community is helping schools find ways to

collaborate with their communities to provide services and educate youth.
Students working alongside adults, have opportunities to engage in
meaningful community-based learning that both serves the community
and addresses their learning needs. By building on the social present in
youth and schools, the community helps to develop responsible citizens
for today and skilled leaders for tomorrow.
The Global Teacher

I. Introduction

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where

his influence stops.
-- Henry Brooks Adams

I choose this quotation of Henry because when we say

teacher, they don’t stop learning for the sake of the learners. They are the
one who influence or motivate the learner to learn on their own, they guide
and make learning enjoyable and easier for the learners.

A global teacher is the one who is armed enough to teach

his/her learners with the modern technologies for education. This teacher
also teaches their discipline from a global perspective. I think that global
teacher is the one has professional and have special skills to share and
learn and can also brings the world into their classroom, school and
community. And someone who is prepared or trained to teach
internationally not just in their country. This would mean that they could
teach in diverse situations. They could do this in person or via satellite
networks.

Teachers need "global" knowledge about the world in

general as well as content specific to the subjects they teach. So that
teachers will be able to know what are the changes or improvement to do
for the subject. They will be given to prepare more for their subjects, and
learners will be able to follow the changes for it. Teachers should search
more information to apply this in class.

Global education develops the knowledge, skills, and

attitudes that are the basis for decision making and participation in
economic competition and able to prepare the learners to become better
citizen.

II. Results of the Interview

I had interviewed 3 teachers; the first teacher is Mrs. Maricar

Pineda a 3rd year high school teacher, she teaches biology in Holy Cross
College. Next is Mrs. Manaloto , a physics teacher in high school, she also
teaches in H. C. C and the last is Mrs. Maricel Aguas she is a grade 2
teacher in Sapang Bato Elementary School.

For Mrs. Pineda she said that a global teacher is someone who
thinks and acts both logically and globally, and someone embraces the
world’s rich variety of ways of life. For Mrs. Manaloto a global teacher for
her is someone who is committed to making the world a more equitable
place and be able to apply this for the learners who will need changes and
improvement. And lastly for Mrs. Aguas can inspire others to act as Global
Teacher.

OBJECIVES:

1. To identify the meaningful leaning experiences derived from previous FS

class/ es;
2. To write a reflection on the significant insights gained

TASKS:

1. Narrate experiences from previous FS class taken.

From all the previous FS that I have taken I observe different

teaching strategies that the teacher uses. How well that the have
maintain a good classroom management. In FS1 I had been
assign to the mentally handicap children. I observed how the
teacher uses different instructional materials and they motivate
the child to perform on it. In our FS 2 and 3, I observe how the
teacher make a lesson plan and how she able to deliver it in the
class and effective it is. I also observe the assessment tool used
to measure the strengths and weaknesses of the learners. I
observes that they have a good classroom environment (painted
classroom, air-conditioned classroom, clean comfort room, chairs
and table are new and cabinets).the teacher uses different kind
of instructional materials for every lesson and its effectiveness
because the learner focus themselves in the lesson and they
participate each time the teacher raise a question.
2. List down learning insights dawn and verified from the narrated
experiences.

I learned that learning is through discovery and experience, so

there a need for a teacher to guide the learners very well.
Classrooms environment plays an important ole in learning, this
motivates the learners and teachers to share ideas in class and
learn both. Using different teaching strategies can motivate
learners by participating in the classroom discussion and help
them understand the lesson very well. Classroom management is
also important for smooth learning transition and help to
maintain positive behavior.

3. Write a reflection on the learning insights gained.

I realized that giving a good motivation like giving energizes, doing

a game, raising questions before discussing will help the learners motivate
to listen with the teacher. Using a lot of teaching strategies can make
discussion lively or fruitful and this can encourage learners to think very
well. Giving an appropriate assessment tool can help them to master each
lesson well. In my observation, a good classroom management has also
give a big impact for both teacher and learner. As much as possible the do
not start until the classroom is clean and organized. It’s a good routine so
that they will be motivated to go to the school and lean comfortably.

4. Expectations on recent field study.

I’m expecting to my next observations is that my critic teacher will

have more time to teach her pupils so that I can observe more of he
teaching styles. I expect that I can handle my observe class so that I have
the chance to practice my profession.
The Teacher as a Professional

I. Introduction

"You must do the things you think you cannot do."

- Eleanor Roosevelt

Teaching is a very challenging job you have to learn all the things
related to the subjects you are teaching, plus learning to take control your
pupils, learning to do teaching strategies, learn to motivate the learners
and most especially you need to have dedication to your job. You have to
love teaching because it is a novel profession that needs patience.

A professional teacher needs to be confident without being

arrogant. Nobody can expect to have all the answers, the professional
teacher should be able to admit defeat but offer to find out more for the
learners. When the teacher enters the classroom s/he should have all the
required materials and the lesson plan ready. Interaction with the group
needs professional standards of behavior like being polite, firm and fair
just about sum it up.

Teacher must give everyone their chance to contribute and should

be flexible enough to modify lessons if they are obviously not going to
plan. It stands to reason also that teacher must observe punctuality and
appropriate tidiness and dress: it is not possible to demand such behavior
from students if the teacher doesn’t set the standards. If a teacher has a
problem class or learner then the school should have procedures for
handling the difficulties. The teacher should not have to feel alone and
vulnerable if a difficult situation arises.

This are the qualities of a teacher to be professional, but you need

to be yourself, do your teaching very well and help the learners to learn
and be part of their everyday learning.

II. Results of the interview

According to one of the faculty of E.P. P. of Clemendes Elementary

School, who is Mrs. Erlinda Herrera the qualities of a good teacher should
be PROFESSIONAL, thoroughly so, and above all other qualities. A
teacher can be sympathetic, funny, dashing, hip, and cool and all of the
other great things we wish all teachers would be. But at the end of
everything, like any other person in charge of forming young people in the
right direction, they must be PROFESSIONAL.

Just think, what if you had a teacher who was so nice that nobody
flunked, even those who truly deserve to. That would be a monumental
injustice to the students who worked hard to pass, and even more so to
the student who deserved to fail but was passed anyway because that guy
will think he can get away with mediocrity or substandard performance.

Same thing with teachers who consort too much with students, who
hang out with students during breaks, blurring the line between a person
in authority and the wards under their charge. How will students learn to
conduct themselves properly if the teacher acts like a teenager too?
Worst of all, what if a teacher starts getting too personally involved with
particular student. This goes beyond merely playing favorites to outright
close personal relationships

III. Analysis

As what Mrs. Herrera said about the professional teacher, the

teacher should also deal with the learner but there should be limited. Because
some learners lose their respect to their teachers because they think that they
can control them. And as much as possible avoid favoritism in class this will
lead to conflict and some may lose their interest in class. A good relationship
to the school staff is also a good quality, without any competition instead
cooperation to each other for the improvement of their school or teaching.
And teacher also understands the learner’s capacity and there’s no pressure
on the part of the learners to study there’s grade. These are the things that
Mrs. Herrera follows to be able to be professional.

III. Conclusion

The teacher as professional needed good qualities such as manages learner-

teacher relationship, collaboration with school staff, being knowledgeable to the
profession, etc.
Introduction

Conceptually speaking, the Learning Environment refers to the whole

range of components and activities within which learning happens. A
classroom environment should be one that is safe and positive in promoting
learning.. A student will best learn in a safe environment. It is up to the
teacher to make the environment of a classroom into that of a learning
environment In addition to this, students respond best in a classroom that is
positive and rewards learning and achievement.

Classroom management and rules are the foundation of a positive

learning environment. In Foundation and Principles of Teaching I learned
various discipline strategies and approaches about positive and negative
forms of punishment and reinforcement. I have seen teachers who subscribe
to this philosophy have only a few rules but are very thorough and consistent
with rule enforcement. Each rule within this plan has consequences
increasing in severity with each additional infraction. There is also a rationale
for each rule as well as reinforcement for good behavior as well.

Good behavior or performance should be rewarded in the classroom.

If a student once misbehaved but now demonstrates a good behavior, it
should be noted and praised. Similarly if students perform well do complete
an assigned task they should also be praised. This motivates the student and
makes them feel good. This will make them want to repeat this good behavior
in order to receive more praise. The environment that we create in our
classrooms sets the tone for learning. Students are most successful in safe
and positive classrooms that promote learning. I plan to have a very
constructive and learning-centered environment in my future classroom.
Observations

Classroom Climate:

The atmosphere being created by the teacher in this classroom was very
light and comfortable. The relationship between the teacher and the student was
quite open and free. It was shown on how students were able to voice out their
feelings and emotions, by asking straight questions which they have in mind and
by how students share their stories of experiences to their teacher. The
conversations inside the classroom shows that students were already
comfortable on how they act and move inside the class, maybe because the
people in their environment were known to them.

Physical Environment:

The setting of the classroom is traditional. The maintenance of the

classroom’s cleanliness was being monitored by the cleaners who were
assigned by the teacher during the start of the class. There were two groups
assigned to clean the classroom for each day. The morning cleaners who
cleans the room before the class starts and the afternoon cleaners who
cleans the room after class hours.

In terms of bulletin boards and displays, everything was put in their proper
places. The big board which contains displays of different learning materials
was placed at the back portion of the room and the small ones were in front at
the side of the blackboards. The windows are wide open where fresh air could
free goes into the room. The room was well-lighted. One last thing was that
the size of the tables and chairs were just enough for the students to work
and study very well.
Management of Classroom:

The teacher’s daily routine goes this way; As she enters the room, she
checks on the cleanliness of the entire room. This includes the proper
arrangement of the chairs, if the garbage basket was empty, if the erasers where
off chalk-dust, and lastly if the floors were swept thoroughly. She will check if
each member of the cleaning group participated or has contributed some help at
each other. Then she will ask the students to settle down because she will be
checking their attendance with her record book. After that she will proceed with
lecturing then discusses.

Discipline:

The teacher has a very nice relationship with her students. She is very
approachable and accommodating. She is very patient and sincere with what she
does for the class. But her students never lose respect for their teacher even if
she is kind there is integrity in her actions. She never tends to lose the poise and
the figure of authority as a teacher.

III. Analyses

I was able to observed the grade 6 pupils which were being handled by
Mrs. Erlinda Herrera a teacher from Dr. Clemendes Dayrit Elementary School.
In the observation I had in terms of the climate they have in side the classroom.
I may say that their teacher Mrs. Herrera was a very kind, open, and most of all
a respective teacher. She had created an atmosphere where her students could
feel comfortable and hassle-free for learning.

It is because of the treatment she shows to them. Each student also

contributed to the light aura they have in the class, where each individual can
move freely. The management the teacher has inside the classroom clearly
shows how organized were her routines and activities being implemented inside
the class. With the patterns she had set, everything becomes procedural. This
made her students initiates to do the tasks assigned to them without being told.
That inculcates values and teaches them to accept responsibilities and
obligations.

With how the teacher disciplines her students, She kept on telling them to do
good things and to always practice respect in every aspect and situations.
Sometimes she tends to deliver it to the students nicely but at times teachers
should be like monsters if some students are crossing the boundary of being a
students above the teacher.

My Reflection

Classroom climate is defined as the type of environment that is created for

students by the school, teachers, and peers. Teachers are continually looking to
create a "positive" classroom climate in which student learning is maximized.
According to Julie Crotty, author of Seizing the Days: Engaging All Learners,
having an environment where students feel safe, nurtured, and intellectually
stimulated is a must for students to learn to their potential.

This type of positive classroom climate allows for students to meet their
basic needs of physical and mental health. While there is no specific definition of
what creates a negative classroom climate, it is considered to be one in which
students feel uncomfortable, whether physically, emotionally, or academically, for
any reason.

As I have observed the teacher as a classroom climate modulator plays a

big role in order for the students to feel comfortable while inside the classroom as
they obtain knowledge from the lesson which were discussed among them. The
teacher’s attitudes and approaches among the students were huge factors that
will create an open and gap free atmosphere inside the class. I have learned the
different things that it should take into considerations in planning and managing a
classroom routines and the like. I have realized the importance of implementing
classroom management in order to create an environment which is conducive to
learning.

V. Conclusion

In the experiences I had on this observation, I’ve come to realize how

classroom environment affects student’s growth and development. I have come
to realize the importance of implementing classroom management in the class in
order to have a well- organized procedures and routines in facilitating classroom
lessons and activities.

With these, I therefore conclude that student’s learning could be greatly

affected by what occurs and can be seen in their environment. Students were
send by their parents to school in order for them to learn, and if certain stimulus
in the classroom surroundings may have a negative effect on their acquisition of
knowledge, learning would never take place.

It is very important that teachers should implement classroom management

procedures in order to create a conducive learning habitat for young habitat.
