Filipino Reading Comprehension
Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?
Ni Lualhati Bautista
Unang Kabanata

“Ladies and gentlemen, here comes kindergarten class, section one, handled by Mrs. Erlinda Macasaya! Please
give them a big hand!”
Palakpakan.
Klik! Itinulak ito ng kasunod. Hinarap ni
Maya’t tinampal ang kamay ng kaklase. Pinandilatan sila ni Mrs. Macasaya.
“Coming next is kindergarten class, section two, led by their adviser, Miss Elvira Sagun. Ladies and gentlemen,
please give them a big hand!”
Martsa papasok ang section two.
“Tser, may I go out!”
Napahindig ang titser. “Mamaya!”
“Iihi ako!”
“Mamaya sabi!”
Nagbanta ang bata. “Ba’la kayo!”
“Ssh!”
isang batang naka make-up at lipstick.
To differentiate, sagot niya. Dahil meron siyang Tatay Raffy.

Siyempre araw-araw me praktis, kayo.”
“S’yempre!”
“Baka mamaya, iiyak ka?”
“Baka ikaw ang iiyak, Nanay?”
“Bakit ako?”
“Bibili mo ‘kong toga saka gown saka bikini. Maraming perang kailangan do’n!”
Ano man
“Oh Captain, my captain!” banat ng ikatlong bata.
May kasama pang malakas
na tawanan.
Pero hindi pumalakpak ang prinsipal. Hindi natawa. Kundi napahindig:
“Sino pa!” at nagmamalaki pa!
Tumalim ang tingin ni Ding kay Lea. “Talagang wala kang turong mabuti!”
Third Princess!
Second Princess!
At nahihiya.
Miss Kinder, ’83. Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Kinder ’82 Dolores Villafuerte! Let’s give her a big hand, please!
“And now, Miss Kinder ’83, ladies and gentlemen... because of her simplicity, her freshness, poise and total
personality...” pause. Birada ng tugtog. Mga nakabiting hininga. “Maria Natalia Gascon!”
Pati puso yata niya’y tumalon at
Klik! Lumalabo ang lens sa
mga mata niya. Ano ‘to, umiiyak ba siya? Klik!
Klik! Maya, naririnig mo ba, anak? Si Raffy ang naging katumbas mo! Alam mo ba kung sino si Raffy? Iyon ang
pinakamalaking pag-ibig ko!
Klik! Klik!
“Ding, ‘yong film! Sagad na ‘to, Ding ‘yong film!”
“Eto, eto!”
“Diyos ko, matagal pa ba bago malagay ‘yan! Mae-expose ‘tong nauna!”

paninindigan bilang isang mamamayan.

May
nangalugmok at nangahandusay. Ang iba nama’y sugatang nagsipanakbuhan. O! Kasuklam-suklam na
panoorin…

Bakit kayo nangingiti? Bakit nga? Bakit ninyo ako pinagmamasdan mula paa hanggang ulo?
Mula ulo hanggang paa? Bakit?

tumakbo!
