PersonalNetworkingGadgetPackage´),whichis nothing butthenew
discoverywhichis underdevelopingstagebyNEC Corporation.Itis
simplyanewinventionin computeranditis associated with
communicationfield.Surelythis willhavea greatimpactionthecomputer field.P-
ISMis agadgetpackageincludingfivefunctions :apen-style cellular phone with a
handwriting data input function,virtual keyboard, a very small projector, camera
scanner,andpersonal ID key with cashlesspass function.P-ISMs are connected
with one another through short-range wireless technology.The whole set is also
connected to theInternet through thecellular phone
function.Thispersonalgadgetinaminimalistpenstyleenablestheultimate ubiquitous
computing.

INTRODUCTION

Computer affectsour life in a muchbiggerwaythenmostofusmighthavethought.

Ithasbecomeacompulsoryrequirementinmostprofessionstobeabletousecomputersof
tware.
Moderncomputerswhicharebasedonintegratedcircuitsaresmallenoughtofitintomobi
le devices butimaginehavingacomputerthatwillfitintoapen.

ImagineaworldwhereeverybodycanusemodemITwithoutbeinganexpert.
Imagineusingonlypenandpapertosende-mailsandSMS.Pen-
stylePersonalNetworkingGadgetarecomputersintheshapeofdifferentpenseachhaving
afunctionofitsownandwhencombinedtogethergiveustheusageofafull-
blowncomputerItisacomputerbrokenapartintopieces,
eachthesizeofapen.Thescreenandkeyboardareprojectedontosurfaces.

The P-ISM (Pen-stylePersonal Networking Gadget Package)is only a prototype

underdeveloping stage by NECCorporation.In 2003,Genev a held the ITU telecom
Word exhibition which exhibited a conceptual $30,000 prototype of a P-ISM
designedbytheTokyo-basedNECCorporation.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

 Acomputerthatutilizes anelectronicpen(calledastylus)ratherthanakeyboardfor
input.

 Pencomputers generallyrequirespecialoperating systems thatsupport

handwritingrecognitionsothatuserscanwriteonthescreenoronatabletinsteadoftypin
gonakeyboard.

 Mostpencomputersarehand-helddevices,whicharetoosmallforafull-sizekeyboard

 TheP-ISM (Pen-stylePersonalNetworkingGadgetPackage)consists
ofapackageof5pens that
allhaveuniquefunctions,combiningtogethertocreatevirtualcomputingexperienceby
producingbothmonitorandkeyboardonanyflatsurfacesfromwhereyoucancarryout
 functions thatyouwouldnormallydoonyourdesktopcomputer. P-ISM’s
areconnectedwith
 Oneanotherviaashort-range
(Bluetooth)wirelesstechnology.Thewholesetisconnectedtothe
 Internetthroughthecellularphonefunction.

HOW DOES EACH COMPONENT WORK
1.CPUpen:

ThefunctionalityofCPUisdonebyoneofthepens.Itisalsocalledcomputingengine.

2.Communicationpen:

P-ISMs areconnectedwithoneanotherthroughshort-rangewirelesstechnology.Thewholesetis
alsoconnectedtotheInternetthroughthecellularphonefunction.Theyareconnectedthrough
Tri-
wirelessmodes(Bluetooth,802.11B/G,andCellular)whicharemadesmallandkeptinasmal
lpenlikedevice.

3.Virtualkeyboard:

The virtual key board works on any flat surface which usesa camera to track the
fingermovements.Onthisspecific keyboard,thisis done by a 3D IR sensor technology with
lasertechnologytogetafullsizekeyboard.Youcanalsochangethelanguageinputandthelayoutof
thekeyboard.
Thisismoreefficientthannormalkeyboardsbecauseyoudon’thavetobuyanewkeyboardforever
ylanguage.Theyarealsoeasytomaintainastheyarepronetodamagebyspills,dropsandothermalf
unctions.
4.LEDprojectors
Therole of the monitor istaken by the LED projector.LEDprojectorsuse LCD technologies
forimage creation with a difference asthey use an array of LightEmittingDiodesas the
lightsource, negating the need for lamp replacement.Alsoit would not needs

Wehaddigitalcameraintheshapeofpen.Itisusefulinvideorecording,

videoconferencing;simplyitiscalledaswebcam.Itisalsoconnectedwithotherdevicethr

oughBluetooth.Themajoradvantageitissmallwhichiseasilyportable.Itis a360-Degree
VisualCommunicationDevice.Wehaveseenvideophoneshundredsoftimesinmovies.
Conventionalvisualcommunicationsatadistancehavebeenlimitedduetothedisplaydevicesand
 terminals.Thisterminalenablesshowingofthesurroundingatmosphereandgroup-to-group
communicationwitharounddisplayandacentralsuper-wide-anglecamera.

BatteryofP-ISM gadget:

Themostimportantpartintheportabletypeofcomputerisitsbattery.Usuallybatteriesmustbe
smallinsizeandworkforlongertime.Itcomeswithabatterylifeof6+.Fornormaluseitcan
beusedfor2weeks.

Bluetoothconnectivity:

Bluetoothiswidelyusedbecausewecanabletotransferdataormakeconnectionswithout
wires.Thisis veryeffectivebecausewecanabletoconnectwheneverweneedwithouthaving
wires.Theyareusedatthefrequencybandof2.4GHzISMthemostefficientandcomprehensivesoluti
onforthemostserious problems canbeaccomplishedbysiliconvendors.
TheycanimplementinformationexchangecapabilitieswithinthedesignsoftheBluetooth

Existingusageofthis technology:
Even though clientscannot yet purchase"pen" computers like the P-ISM,allof the parts
of thiscomputer already exist.Forexample the virtual projected keyboard isalready
available fromvarious companies includingLumioandVirtualDevice.
HOW IT TAKES INPUT

Ithas twomethodsforinput

1. Withthevirtualkeyboard.
2. Withdigitalcamera.

WHY IT WORKS WITH WINDOWS ONLY?

Itconsistsofdualcoreprocessorembeddedinitandthatiswhyitworksonlywith
WINDOWSoperationsystem.

APPLICATIONS
  Manyresearcheshasbeenmadebutthereisnoclearresultsofar.

 OnlyOnethatusesitisE-fingerprintingthegadgetwillbemoresecure,whichallowsonly
ownertoactivatethe Pc.

 Soevenifwelooseit,nooneelsecan accessthegadget

ADVANTAGES OF P-ISM
1.WhatmakestheP-ISM differentfromalloftheexistingpartsis
thatit’sshapelikepens.Pensareverycommonobjectsthatwecarryaroundoneverydaybasis;byc
arryingjustfourpensyou cancreatea PC. So, its portableandcanbecarriedeasily.

2.As thepenislessvisibleandit’seasiertotakeitoutwithyou,thesizeandweightwillbealotless
anditcanpotentiallycostlessasitwilluselessmaterial.

3.Usingthistechnologywecancarryoutfunctionsthatweusuallycarryoutonadesktopco
mputereasilyandquickly.So, ubiquitous computingcanbedone.

DISADVANTAGES OF P-ISM
1.TheP-ISM ismadefrom5loosepens
whichwillmovearoundwithanychangeinthemovementofsurfacearea.Inatrainjourneytherei
salotofmovementwhich willshakethe pens
aroundandshaketheprojectionofthekeyboardandscreen.So,thiscan’tbeasstableandefficient
asalaptop.

2.Alsothesepens areverysmallandfragileso
theycanbedamagedeasilywhilehandlingthemorcarryingthemaround.Onepenitselfcosts
quitealatsoyoucannotriskdamagingorlosingthem.

3.As thepensaresmallyoucouldlosethemeasilywhichwouldcostyoualot.

4.AlsoKeyboardconceptis notnew.

Theadvantagesoutweighthedisadvantagesas 5-PenPC
technologyisveryuniqueandtherewouldbeagreatdemandinthemarketfortheproductliketh
is.

CONCLUSION
Thecommunicationdevicesarebecomingsmallerandcompact.Thisisonlyanexamplef
orthestartofthisnewtechnology.Wecanexpectmoresuchdevelopmentsinfuture
