What happens if your result is ‘Not Yet Competent’ for one or more assessment tasks?
Our assessment process is designed to answer the question “has the desired learning outcome been
achieved yet?” If the answer is “Not yet”, then we work with you to see how we can get there.
In the case that one or more of your assessments has been marked ‘NYC’, your trainer will provide you
with the necessary feedback and guidance, in order for you to resubmit your responses.
Assessor Responsibilities
Assessors need to be aware of their responsibilities and carry them out appropriately. To do this they
need to:
Ensure that participants are assessed fairly based on the outcome of the language, literacy and
numeracy review completed at enrolment.
Ensure that all documentation is signed by the student, trainer, workplace supervisor and assessor
when units and certificates are complete, to ensure that there is no follow-up required from an
administration perspective.
Ensure that their own qualifications are current.
When required, request the manager or supervisor to determine that the student is ‘satisfactorily’
demonstrating the requirements for each unit. ‘Satisfactorily’ means consistently meeting the standard
expected from an experienced operator.
When required, ensure supervisors and students sign off on third party assessment forms or third-party
report.
Follow the recommendations from moderation and validation meetings.

ASSESSMENT 1A – REPORT
Use the list in the Candidate task checklist provided when submitting your assessments. Do not submit
your work until you have completed all parts of the checklist.
Go to your ‘Unit overview’ screen and select ‘Course files’. Select the Assessment 1A Sustainability policy
template and save to your personal files on your computer. This will become your submission for
Assessment 1A which you will compile as directed, over the duration of the unit.
You will be expected to conduct research to help with this task. All sources should be cited in text and included
in the reference list. Refer to the Didasko Institute of Business student induction book for help in the format
of a reference list if required.
Background
Rather than assessing data for the entire Kingfisher business, this task requires you to collate and interpret
data for the Kingfisher Garden Centre’s head office.
Kingfisher’s head office is located in Fairfield, Victoria, 3078. It takes up 220 square metres of office space
and the building is cooled via three ducted air conditioners. Unlike the garden centres, the office hasn’t been
designed with sustainability in focus.
Ensure you are familiar with the company Kingfisher Garden Centre. Revise the company overview located

You conduct an audit of paper waste in the office and are surprised by the results. Although staff
are aware of recycling and reducing the need for printing, you find that 95% of waste in office bins
is paper.

The following data was gathered by examining six months of electricity bills. A rough benchmark
for energy use for 12 people was based upon information gained from the Energy Made Easy
website and the energy provider.

1. Policy scope
Write a brief statement (one to two paragraphs) about the purpose of this policy. Include a definition of sustainability.
Sustainability can be effectively defined as the ability to meet the demands of the current generation
without compromising the needs for the future generation (Low et al., 2016). A sustainability policy can
be highlighted through a document that defines an organization’s commitment to sustainable initiatives
for the betterment of the firm. The policy scope outlines the objectives of the policy to clarify the
sustainable approach of the organization.
Key stakeholders
Who does the policy affect? Explain the importance of stakeholder management and list your key stakeholders.
The policy affects the key stakeholders of the organization. It is important to identify the level of
involvement with the stakeholders and their decision in sustainability planning (Marinova et al., 2019). The

The EPBC Act developed by the Australian government states the sustainable approaches taken by the organizations in

2. Overview of current situation
Describe Kingfisher’s (using the information provided in Assessment 1A: Report) current
performance in key areas of waste management, energy and water consumption, emissions and
procurement. You may also wish to comment on broader sustainability issues like social and
financial sustainability.

Based on a review of the above, summarise the key areas for improvement.
Kingfisher Garden Centre has conducted an audit of waste related to the paper waste observed in their office. It was found
that staffs were aware of the reducing and recycling trends in printing. However, more than 95% of the waste generated by the
office bin was paper. Additionally, the data gathered from witnessing the electricity bills was huge. The results were obtained
from an average of 12 people through energy provider websites and Energy Made Easy website (Courvisanos and Boavida,
2017). The energy provider Fossil Fuel Inc. suggests that in October about 41 kWh was consumed on an average basis. This
suggested more than 2.1 tonnes of greenhouse gas emission for October month. The benchmark set was for about 12 people.
However, December witnessed a significant increase in the energy consumption ad more than 2.31 tonnes of green house
emission was observed. Additionally, the water provider Wiley Waters Ways provided an estimation of water bills by
considering 12 months bills (Kusakabe et al., 2015). It was found that water usage was round 29kL from November to
January, whereas, the usage was reduced to about 26 kL, as observed from August to October. The benchmark set without
cooling towers was observed to be around 0.40 kL/m 2/year. Additionally, the efficient rating was estimated to be around 0.47
kL/m2/year (Moore and Doyon, 2018).

The graph here states the energy usage by Kingfisher Garden Centre. It is evident from the graph that December witnessed
more than $510 expenses in the energy usage (Nursey-Bray et al., 2015). From the above observation, it can be said that
Kingfisher Garden Centre has cut down the water usage and water wastage. However, the energy efficiency is witnessing an
up-down graph and the energy consumption has increased significantly in the last year. This has led to significant
consciousness among the stakeholders of the organization that states effective sustainable practices must be implemented. It
can therefore, be inferred that energy consumption must be reduced so that the organization can contribute to sustainable
practices effectively and efficiently (Marsh et al., 2017). This will create an impact on the consumers’ platform and they will be
focused on buying innovative gardening products from Kingfisher Garden Centre. This will enhance the revenue flow of the
company and will help them to earn a brand value so that they can open new stores in different regions of Australia.

Improve WHS by ….
Kingfisher Garden Centre has adopted SMART goals to reach its target within the assigned time. Their primary target is to
reduce the energy and water usage, as well as decrease in the waste production. The paper waste is significant in the office bins and
the prime focus of the organization is to reduce paper wastage in the organization. The organization has target to reduce the paper
waste by 21,000 kWh by the end of 2020. Additionally, they have targeted their stores across Australia to reduce energy usage by

Compliance is necessary as it helps Kingfisher Garden Centre to enhance the sustainability practices to
establish a secured position in the Australian market. The sustainability plan can be reviewed either
yearly or quarterly by analyzing the progress made in the sustainable practices. Additionally, a
responsibility matrix can be used to analyze the duties and responsibilities that can be beneficial for the
organization (Tapsuwan et al., 2018). Continuous improvement is required in the sustainability
approaches so that the organization can attract new and potential customers to uplift their business
processes. Moreover, to maintain the standards of accreditation certificate, it is necessary that Kingfisher
Garden Centre prove its compliance with the necessary codes and legislation. Thus, an auditing system
is implemented so that continuous improvement in the sustainable approach can be monitored. The
compliance is set by the organization so that it aligns with the ISO standards set by the government.
Thus, continuous improvement is needed to eradicate the root cause of any issues rising during the
application of compliance strategy. It will help Kingfisher Garden Centre to enhance the prevention Action

Formal monitoring process can be implemented involving quantitative data analysis. This helps the company to evaluate its
performance in the competitive market. This monitoring can be applied either on a daily or monthly basis. It is evident that
Kingfisher Garden Centre has developed an audit system that helps the organization to review on a quarterly status their
sustainable performances (McFarlane et al., 2018). The energy consumption can be quantitatively monitored by implementing
the indicator of Total Greenhouse gas emission. This can be effectively measured by supplier bills or Smart meters. The
acquired data can be measured with the help of spreadsheets or Smart meter data. The environment coordinator is asked the
survey questions that were reported in Annual Sustainability Report of Kingfisher Garden Centre and the Quarterly Energy
report. The paper waste can be measured using photocopier data usage report and Team leader of the sustainable project
was questioned regarding this. Besides this, the water use can be measured using Supplier bills and Sub meters that can
monitor the peak of water utilization. The success of the policy initiative can be measured by the surveyors provide a positive
response to the survey questionnaires.
