Dear Chris,
Thanks for your email and I am happy to know that you liked the images that were featured in the issue.
This is a relatively unknown festival across the country, but it is celebrated in the West region in a big way.
It is colourful and full of action and one of the reasons for us to feature it in the Festivals of India section
was to ensure that photographers like you know the beauty and the opportunity it provides to shoot. This
is an annual feature and may be you can see it next year. But in the meanwhile, the month of September
will also provide you with a great opportunity to shoot Ganesh Chaturthi.
As for featuring your work. Sure you can send us the images to have a look and we can see if we can
publish it in any of our sections.

Dear J,
The 18-SSmm is a good basic lens and it is used
by amateurs a lot. It is a good lens to start with, but
usually it isn't used to shoot videos. If you have an
option to use some other lens then that might be
better. But otherwise 18-SSmm lens can also be
used.

SSD SHOOTOUT
The technology in the flash memory industry has been moving at rampant speeds.
While there is continuous effort to pack more memory in a smaller size, manufacturers
are also ensuring that consumers get faster speeds with the increase in data sizes. With
hard drives with movable parts becoming more and more outdated, Solid-State Drives
(SSDs) that feature no moving parts have become popular amongst photographers.
The reason for their popularity is negligible start-up time and faster speeds and with
the increase in the storage capacity in the past year, these portable SSD drives are the
way for the future.
And since photographers use external storage devices during shoots and also to
store and backup their data, this year we decided to extend our memory shootout to

Mirrorless cameras have taken the world by storm in the last few years and have proven
to be a tough competition for DSLRs. The primary reason that has attracted DSLR
users to switch to mirrorless cameras is the smaller and lighter sizes while providing
similar quiality and performance for both photos and videos. With more and more
photographers buying these cameras, manufacturers have started concentrating
on increasing the lens portfolios for them. Among all the lenses in use, full-frame
mirrorless camera users also sometimes feel the need to use standard zoom lenses
like the ones that DSLRs have. The standard zoom lens is a great lens giving the best
of both worlds, wide as well as zoom. This month, we take the Standard Zoom lenses
from manufacturers, made for mirrorless cameras and pit them against each other to
test their performance.

Chromatic Aberration
The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM was tested for
chromatic aberration on an industry standard application and
the lens exhibitted a CA of 0.58 pixels which is the highest of

the least value of 0.29 pixels and sandwiched in between,
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di Ill RXD exhibited a value of 0.40

Distortion
After extensively shooting with the three lenses and
comparing them, all the three lenses exhibited perspective
distortion as the building captured looks tilted slightly towards
the left. Canon exhibited a considerable amount of distortion
compared to the other two, while Tamron had the lowest in
all three of them and Nikon was somewhere in between both
the lenses. All the three lenses exhibited a negligible barrel

Even the best photographs on display are only as good as the printer they're printed on.
With technology growing at a fast speed in the printing industry as well, choosing the
perfect product according to the needs of photographers have become more difficult
than ever. Like every year, to make your decision easier, we asked the manufacturers
to send us their best All-in-One printers to test under various parameters, and find the
best one to buy.
Parameters
With the constant technological
developments, it has become
necessary to evolve in terms of
testing parameters. Our parameters
last year were stringent, and this
year too we will adhere to the same.

Overview
Epson L850
The EPSON L850 is an all-in-one printer featuring EPSON's proprietary ink tank system prints media with a maximum
resolution of 5760 x 1 440 dpi. In addition to this, the unit has 90 nozzles for black and a further 90 nozzles for each colour. The
printer is also capable of variable size droplets for better accuracy. The unit is capable of printing roughly 3000 pages of black
text and 1800 pages of colour photos.
Set-up Time
Epson L850
The Epson printer took a total
of 5 minutes and 21 seconds to set
up. The Epson L850 is quite easy to
set-up. The ink-tank system which
is incorporated in the design of the
printer makes it easier to handle and
also saves some space on the desk.
Overall, the Epson L850 seems to be
built for the purpose.

Colour A4 Photo
For this test, we picked a colourful photograph, which also included extremely small details. The test follows the same process
of the earlier template tests, and each of the printers' output is gauged for reproduction of colours and details, as well as the time
taken to print. The Epson L850 took 2 minutes 1 5 seconds to print the image, whereas the Canon TS8270 took 2 minutes 1 2
seconds to print the picture. All the images were printed on a glossy media of A4 size. The outputs from both the printers were not
completely accurate, The Epson L850 output was oversaturated, and was not close to the original but the output from the Canon
TS8270 was the closest in terms of true colour reproduction, colour saturation, sharpness and overall print quality.

Images Per Minute (I PM) Test
WHAT IS IPM?
IPM is calculated through either of the three different methods which are Estimated SAturated Throughput (ESAT), First Set
Out Time (FSOT) and Effective ThroughPut (EFTP}. Each of these three methods use different sized jobs to print and have
different ways to time them. These are :
• FSOT for the short job.
• EFTP for the short, medium, and long jobs.
• ESAT for the medium job.
Short Job entails printing one 4-page file and timing it. Medium Job is printing one 4-page file, then repeatedly printing
that for 30 seconds more. And Long Job is printing one 4-page file, then repeatedly printing that for another 4 minutes. The
average results are the same for all three methods. We are using the FSOT method wherein we calculated the time taken for
completion of a Short Job, which means the time taken to print 4 pages from clicking the Print button on the PC to the last
page of the 4 page document being printed in full.
Epson L850
The Epson printer fared well but was slightly slower than Canon. It recorded an IPM of 1 .00.15.
Copy Test
For the copy test, we used the text template we designed earlier, and
tested the printers on how quickly they were able to copy it in colour
as well as black and white.
Epson L850
In the copy test, the Epson printer clocked a time of 31 .68
seconds in black and white copy, and 27.94 seconds in colour copy
coming second in the copy test.
Canon Pixma TS8270
The Canon printer recorded 14.36 seconds in the black and white
copy and 27.51 seconds in the colour copy. The Canon was the
fastest of the lot.
36 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
Scan Test
This test was conducted by recording
time taken to scan one sheet of size A4
in colour.
Epson L850
The Epson printer took 23.34
seconds to scan.
Conclusion
Overall both the printers performed well barring a few challenges in their tests.
Epson L850
Setting up the L850 was a breeze with the printer
doing all the work after connecting it. Although the
printing time for Epson in most tests seemed slightly
behind Canon, the overall quality of the output was
pretty good. The colours seemed well saturated and
accurate in most cases. Overall, it seemed to be a good
performer, however it lost some points when it came to
pricing. At 29,099 the L850 was more expensive than
the competition which nudged the favour towards the
competition.

Buying a DSLR/Mirrorless camera is just the first step in your video journey. Part of
the fun is going out, step by step adding an accessory here and there over the years,
and learning the ins and outs of video making along the way. Whether you are just
jumping into the world of video for the first time, or already have a few years under
your belt and are ready to take it to the next level. Shooting video with your DSLR/
Mirrorless camera is easy. You just switch over to video mode and move your camera
at something beautiful or interesting. But, if you want to get serious about shooting
motion, having the right gear will really help you out. Here is a list of accessories that
will make your movie making more enjoyable and more amazing.

You are going to do the of your
composing and focussing using the
screen on the back of your camera, and
that can cause some issues. Reflection
on screen can be a big problem if you
are shooting in harsh light, and a Ioupe
will help you prevent that. You will also
be focussing manually using the screen,
so having more expansion on your
screen will give you a better look at your
subject for focussing.
Audio Recorder
Having an audio recorder offers a bit more
skillfulness than an on-camera microphone
because you can literally drop it wherever you
want and let it record. If you're going to be
shooting video of a function or event, you can
drop it in an audio sweet spot and shoot from
wherever you want to. They are also usually a
bit more customisable and easier to monitor.
On the downside, you will have to sync the
audio up with the video in post processing,
which adds time to your editing.
Shotgun Microphone
Shotgun microphone typically sits on a hot
shoe and records audio directly into the
camera. These can be good for outdoor
interviews and it offers a definite transformation
over your camera's built in recorder. They can
be very directional, though, so you will likely
only get a good audio signal out of things
happening directly in front of you. They also
need to stay bound to your camera, so the
sound might change as the camera moves
around.
Lavalier Microphone
A must have microphone if you are going to do
a lot of documentary style interviews. These
mics are attached directly to a person's collar
and provides great quality when it comes
to recording someone's voice. Until you get
far along in your video making career, you
probably won't need one.

Shutter speed can be a difficult thing when shooting
video. You are limited on the slow end by the frame
rate at which you're shooting. When your shutter
speed gets too fast, your footage starts to look
shaky and unnatural. A neutral density filter will help
you keep that in check. It serves the same function
as it would in a photography scenario, letting you
use a wider aperture in harsh light situations. But,
it also lets you slow down your shutter speed
under similarly bright lights to keep things looking
smooth. You can get variable neutral density filters
that change strength as you rotate them, but they
are very expensive. You can also get a few different
strengths and stack them if you need to cut more
light before it hits the sensor.

Camera movement is important for making video, but it's also one of
the hard parts for still photographers when making the transition. Rails
help a camera move smoothly in ways that a panning tripod head can
not assist. They are good for tracking subjects as they pass, adding
movement to otherwise static scenes, they can also be used to get
tighter or wider on a subject without zooming. You can get a basic set
of rails on which you actually need to slide the camera, or you can go
for a set-up where the camera actually slides automatically. They are
very. Unless you are shooting at a high level, you will not use it much,
so look into renting to try before you get one.

Gimbals are great for free motion. Steadicams allows camera operators to move
around freely before gimbals came along, but thanks to the fact that they are
lightweight and compact, operators can take their camera to any place or through
anything and still get a smooth output. You can capture fabulous videos from various
angles with great stability by shooting with a gimbal. You can rotate your camera
smoothly in different directions by attaching your DSLR/Mirrorless to gimbals. It will
provide you with three axes to rotate on your handheld video camera.

TIPS AND TECHS
The biggest problem with cameras and lenses are that they are fragile and expensive.
So let's look at some of the tips and accessories to protect your camera and lenses
from bumps, bangs, and everyday wear and tear.
58 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
UPGRADE YOUR CAMERA STRAP
The secret to protecting your camera from falling
is pretty simple: You r camera should never fall
directly onto the ground from a height that can
damage it. Instead, it should be attached to your
body at all times with a camera strap. As soon
as your camera comes out of your bag, put your
strap on. Once the strap comes off, your camera
goes back in your bag.
USE A BLOWER
If your gear does get a bit dusty or gets covered in sand, air can go a long way towards fixing any potential problems.
If your gear is a little wet from the rain, rather than leaving it sitting in your bag until you get home, put it somewhere safe
to air out. The water will evaporate and all will be well. Even entry level cameras are designed to deal with the occasional
splash.
On the other hand, if dust or sand is the problem, don't use a lens cloth to wipe it off. You will either rub the particles in
further or basically just sandpaper your gear. Instead, use a blower to remove it.
There are many blowers available in market like FOTGA Professional Rocket Cleaning Air Blower, LS Photography Rocket
Air Blaster Blower and Giottos Rocket-Air Blower AA1 900
September 2019 59
-
PROTECT YOUR LENS FROM
SCRATCHES AND DUST
While UV filters don't do much to
protect your lenses from falls, they can
protect them from scratches and keep
dust away from the front element. Also,
some lenses are not weather sealed
unless there is a filter attached. For this
reason, it is a good idea to keep a UV
filter, if not permanently on your lens,
then at least in your camera bag.
Cheap UV filters will noticeably affect
your images. So, don't buy UV filters
with no name brands instead you can
go for brands like Hoya, Goja, Tiffen,
B+W etc.
LCD
While shooting try to avoid
touching the LCD or lens. Oil
from your skin might smudge
the lens and LC D, which affect
your images or how you view
them. Clean the lens and LCD
with a microfiber cloth to avoid
scratches anytime you see the
smudge or fingerprints.
60 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
HANDS-FREE UMBRELLA
A newer type in rain
protection, a hands-tree
umbrella keeps away the
rain while leaving your hands
unoccupied. These solutions
work best on rainy days
without much wind. There
are chances that the wind
could push some of the rain
towards the gear. To prevent
that you can add-an umbrella
holder that attaches an
umbrella to a monopod or
tripod.

TIPS AND TECHS
The recent years have observed the evolution of photography from film cameras
to mirrorless. From an activity with a primary function of getting photos for official
documents, photography has become a hobby for many, and a profession for others.
Along with a camera and all the other equipment, tripods have become one of the
most used accessories helping photographers in clicking great pictures.
ripods are mainly used by photographers for the stability and their construction limits their ability to support a full-fledged
of the camera when clicking in low light situations and DSLR. However, they are ideal for small mirrorless cameras.
when using slow shutter speeds. Physical instability of the
body while photographing in such conditions can lead to blurry Travel Tripod
images. They are also used to support the heavy camera and If you are a nature lover and love going out on hikes or trips/

tripods for smartphones so that people can record good quality just the thing for you. Travel tripods are great when it comes to
videos from the phone itself. With the wide choice of tripods portability and can support heavy DSLRs to help you get the
available in the market, not being able to choose the right one best of photos. Though they square up a bit on functionality
according to your requirements can lead you to difficulty and as an exchange to portability, they might be unable to support
waste of money. A number of variables must be kept in mind cameras with an additional zoom lens which are heavy. As is
while considering buying a tripod. pretty obvious from the name, these are beneficial to travellers.
CATEGORIES OF TRIPOD
Pocket Tripod
62 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
Studio tripods are heavy tripods meant for professional use and
handling a large front camera. They are generally big and heavy
as compared to the others and not recommended for travelling
with. You ought to buy a studio tripod if either you wish to use
it for motionless use during video or if you wish to put it to
specific professional use. Otherwise, a travel tripod will do, to
fulfill all your outdoor and indoor needs.
Mono pod
Monopods are modified tripods with only one leg. They are
useful as they wipe out camera shake to zero. Needless to
say, with just one leg they stand lighter and easier to carry
and handle as compared to the standard tripod. Though they
limit the photographer's movement to a large extent, they are
still helpful to wildlife and sports photographers who find easy
support for weight of the camera.
Studio Tripod
Specialised Tripod
Specialised tripods are special purpose tripods to supply
you with more choice in terms of placement of the tripods to
capture photographs from different angles or at various places.
These are generally used for custom uses or highly customised
and specific applications. Some of the types are Suction Cup
Tripods and Flexible leg tripods.
Now that you have gathered a fair idea of the tripod type
choices that you can buy, you need to give consideration to
the various aspects that decide what makes a tripod fit for your
use. As a prospective buyer of a tripod, you must weigh the
following elements in order to arrive at the one that you will be
bringing home.
September 2019 63

TRIPOD BUYER'S GUIDE
Here is a list of a few specifications that the buyer should keep in mind while looking to buy a tripod.
• Collapsing Size
Collapsing size is the size of the tripod when it is closed. This is an important factor as it decides which of the
categories your tripod falls into. With this information, you can easily choose one which fits your requirements.
• Weight
The weight of the tripod that you will be using should be to your comfort, and the only driving factor while
considering the weight. For example, if you would be traveling a lot, it is better to choose a lighter one. If you are
to be using it in your studio, you might go for a heavier model with better features. Tripods made of carbon fiber
are lighter as compared to those of aluminum, though the tripods are considerably expensive.
• Load Rating
The tripod must be able to support the weight of the camera equipment. You must be careful to choose that, it
can support a weight that is fairly larger (approximately 1 .25 times -1.75 times) as compared to what you plan to
use. This is to keep a margin of safety. While you shoot you place your hands over the camera and apply some
extra force that the tripod has to support. This should be taken into account. Moreover, you might add some extra
equipment such as a battery grip or use a heavier camera or lens in the future and a slightly higher rating will take
care of that
• Tripod Head
A tripod head does not come with the tripod and has to be bought separately, specially for expensive tripods. The
head secures the camera to the tripod and controls its movement. The head and the tripod should have the same
load ratings so that you don't face any problems after buying. The tripod heads come in different forms, pan-tilt,
ball-head, gimbal head and many more. The pan-tilt head has a single control or a dual one depending on allowing
movement in one direction (horizontal), or both directions (horizontal and vertical). The ball-head is better than
pan-tilt as it is flexible and has a better operation with better security for the camera. The gimbal head is a special
head to be used for heavier lenses.
• Construction Material
Keep in mind that the material is important for deciding the strength and the weight of the tripod. Tripods are
specifically made of aluminium, carbon fiber, and titanium, though wood might also be used in larger tripods.
Pocket tripods are made up of plastic too in addition to the other materials that have been mentioned. Aluminum
and Titanium tripods are, needless to mention, heavier and cheaper as compared to the carbon fiber tripods. It
should be noted that when it comes to sturdiness, aluminium beats carbon fiber.

Lights

Tripods
Table top tripods are inexpensive, light and tiny tripods that lets you fix your
phone on any flat surface and take completely sturdy shots so you never have
to be concerned about blurry images. A secondary choice to table top tripod
is the Gorilla Pod Stand. The Gorilla Pod comes with a universal clamp for
any smartphone and is configured to work not only as a stand, but to secure
to any bar or pole with its wrap-able rubber legs. Group the legs collectively
and it works as a grip mount just like the standard table top tripod. Frequently
you can find multi functional grip sticks that combines desktop tripod, grip
handler, monopod and mini tripod all in one. Joby GripTight PRO TelePod
and Tripod iKiip Grip Pro Multifunction Camera Stand are good examples of
multifunction tripods.
The Joby GripTight PRO TelePod Tripod is four accessories coiled into
one. It looks like a table top tripod, but widen the mount and you have an
elevated tripod. You can close the legs and use it as a handle with the mount
prolonged and it becomes a selfie stick. Close both the legs and extend the
mount and you acquire a hand grip for taking close shots. Compact full size
tripods are a great add-on to your phone photography equipment. Tripods are
important to help you take better photos when you are travelling. It's perfect
for capturing landscape photos and videos using the telephoto lens. Just get
a smartphone mount if one is not included with the tripod.

Storage
When you go for a long trip or take lots of photos and videos on your smartphone, it pays to have backup during travel and a
way to add more storage to your smartphone. You should not be dependent on the internal memory of your phone. Continue to
do what you love without thinking about running out of space with a mobile storage solution. Having an external mobile storage
option means you are not held back by the lack of space on your phone. For most Android smartphones, it is as simple as adding a
MicroSD storage card to a a microSD card slot or second SIM slots that expands the storage. Not all microSD cards have the same
read/write speed. Some cards are faster at reading and writing than others and are more suitable for saving high quality images and
Full HD or 4K video footage. SanDisk Ultra is one such card. But, before you get your microSD card, do check the maximum size
readable on your smartphone. What if your phone does not support microSD cards like iPhones or some Android smartphones?
For smartphone with no extermal storage, get a flash drive with lightning, USB Type-C or MicroUSB to USB interface. Such a
device lets you plug into the smartphone's charging and data port adding more storage to your phone. You can then backup your
photos and free up the space on the internal memory or take photos and videos and save them straight to the flash drive.

After buying Camera and lenses, next comes the accessories. From Camera Flashes
and photog raphy backdrop to portrait lighting and light reflectors. There is a wide
range of accessories out there to help you create best photog raphs possible.
So, if you are looking to complete your epic portrait lighting setup or getting ready to
work on your your first portrait session, here are some accessories you should consider
for your portrait photography.
Camera Flashes
Camera flash is one of the most important
equipment when it comes to portrait
photography. Portrait photography also involves
a wide variety of lighting equipment, such as on
camera flash and off camera flash.
On camera flash
While branded on-camera flashes from
companies like Canon and Nikon usually offer
the most features, the problem with that is that
they are not cheap. The good news is if you are
on a budget, a great on-camera flash doesn't
have to cost you that much.
Off-Camera Flashes
On-camera flashes can also be used off-camera.
However, dedicated off-camera flashes, such as
a set of studio lights, can provide even more
flexibility in creating the lighting effects you want.

Lens and camera sensors are extremely delecate.
Being made from glass and semiconductors, these
important parts can get damaged if not taken care of.
The camera lens is opened frequently, specially if you
have more than one lens. This causes dirt and dust
to fall on the inner glass lenses and also the camera
mirror. Sometimes, for mirrorless cameras mostly, dust
can fall directly on the sensor. While the sensor should
not be cleaned by a user and should only be handled
by a professional camera repair agent, the lens can
be cleaned and the camera body can be cleaned too.
Buying a lens and camera cleaner kit can help you
in this. The kit consists of microfiber cloths, blowers,
brushes and cleaning liquids that can clean dust and
grime off of your camera and lenses.

The 50mm lens is an absolute pocket rocket. It is a prime lens, with extremely good
low light shooting capabilities and is quite pocket friendly as well! These lenses are
available for a nominal price of 6000-8000 range and can be used to shoot street,
portrait and much more! Due to these lenses going as low as f/1 .8 (for the cheapest
version), they can be used in low light situations as well. Canon also has a 40mm
2.8 pancake lens that is extremely small and handy.

TIPS AND TECHS
Cameras and lenses have always and will always be i n a photog rapher's mind - 24/7.
But what is i m porta nt here is that photog raphers tend to forget another i m portant
component that can increasingly alter your quality of photog raphy - Accessories.
We as photog raphers are always chasing the perfect moment, the perfect light, the
perfect shot. But what seperates professional photog raphers from amateurs is that
tiny bit of accessory that he or she may have used, and of course a lot of hard work!
So let's discuss some such accessories that might be extremely i m portant for your
photog raphy and how you can use them to your advantage.

TIPS AND TECHS
Camera bags are an integral part of a photog rapher's life. Each photog rapher carries
equipment that costs lakhs of rupees on shoots. So naturally, bags are very i mportant
to make sure that the equipment is safe, secured and can be transported from one
point to another without any problem. These bags range from simple sling bags to
more elaborate rolling cases.
MESSENGER BAGS
CAMERA POUCHES
Camera pouches are small bags that can store just one
camera with a lens. These were widely used when point
and shoot cameras were in vogue but has fallen from
preference since then. The pouches are great to protect
your camera during family vacations but they generally
do not have enough padding to prevent the camera
from damages in case of a fall.
86 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
SLING BAGS
Sling bags are shoulder bags that has one bag strap which runs from one
shoulder and connects to the hip. It makes taking equipment out from the bag
easier but puts a lot of pressure on the shoulder since the entire weight rests
on one shoulder only. This is why sling bags do not have too much space and
can store one camera and a few lenses. The main compartment has removable
internal dividers which can be customised for multipurpose storage. There is
generally also a top compartment that can store smaller accessories like an
external flash, card case and so on.
BACKPACKS
Backpacks are the most widely used bag types for photographers. These are shoulder
bags that have different compartments that suit all photographers' needs. These bags
can differ in sizes and shapes but are generally on the larger end. Some bags come with
extra shoulder supports like metal support rings at the back. The backpacks can carry a
photographer's essentials quite comfortably and has compartments for everything ranging
from a Laptop to a tripod or monopod or even pouches for bottles. Backpacks are widely
used by photographers for longer assignments and some of these bags can also carry
clothes etc. These are also easier to carry around through airports as camera bags like
these do not generally require the user to take out the camera to put it in a tray while passing
through security.
ROLLING CASES
These are essentially equipment carrying trolley bags. Rolling cases more often than not have
hard outer shells with compartments for equipment inside and a handle to pull the trolley
around. They can have either two or four wheels and are useful when you are carrying a large
number of equipment while travelling. Airports can sometimes handle luggage very badly which
may damage the equipment. So, having a rolling case can help. These can also be super useful
if you have to walk a lot on your assignment. But make sure that you are walking on an even
surface or the wheels will get damaged.
CAMERA HOLSTER
This is not a bag but can be a great subsitute for one in short assignments.
These holsters are sometimes double shouldered and sometimes belt
mounted. These allow you to keep your hands free in between shoots. A
great accessory for trekking and hiking since you will probably already have
a rucksack on your bag and may not have enough space to carry a camera.
These also allow for quick access to the camera whenever you need it. These
holsters also allow you yo not bumb your camera hanging from a strap every
time you bend down for something as it firmly attaches to your hip.
