Teacher’s Activity Learners’ Activity

i. ) Preliminary/ Preparatory Activity
Prayer
Prayer leader please lead us in prayer.

Greetings
Good morning class. Good morning Sir Bogz
Good morning classmates.

Yes Sir.
Before you take your seats, please pick up the
trashes under your chair. Arrange your chairs
properly and silently. We’re doing great Sir.

How are you?

Sir, nobody is absent for today.
Checking of Attendance
Class secretary please state who are absent for
today.

Very good everyone.

We discussed about how to rational
Review of the past lesson functions Sir.
Good! What have we discussed last meeting? Yes, Sir.

So, you already know now how to graph

rational functions?? Yes, Sir.
(Using Geogebra Application)
- The name rational is based on the
Have you encountered the word rational? word 'ratio.' A ratio is a comparison of
two or more numbers and is often
What is rational? written as a fraction. A number is
considered a rational number if it can
be written as one integer divided by
another integer. Sometimes this is
referred to as a simple fraction.

- rational expression can be written in

the form

A/B

where A and B are polynomials and

B≠0.
Rational expressions are also called
algebraic fractions.

4, 2, 3, ½, ¾, 5/6, 7/ab,
𝑥2−𝑥−6 𝑥2+7𝑥+10
, , etc.
𝑥+2 𝑥+5
Who can give me some examples of a rational
number?

Very good! Today, we’ll be going to talk more

about rational numbers.
ii.) Motivation/Drill
Okay class! Complete the table below.

a b a*b Simplified
form
5 x + 1/5
12 m – 1/12
3x 4/x + 4
10a ½a + 3/5b
12m 2/3m – 5/2m
x+2 3 – 4/x+2

Pair with your seatmate. Then, discuss with

your partner this question.

Which of the terms in column a is the LCD of

the expression in column b? Also, discuss
how to find the LCD. Give examples.

Ask some pairs to share their work to the

class. Then process their answers.

iii.) Lesson Proper

A. PRESENT
Some may say yes but some may also say
Let us have this problem, no.

Mark takes 2 hours to clean 500 bottles. Flor

takes 3 hours to clean 450 bottles. Working
together, how long should it take them to clean
1,500 bottles? Their answers may not be the same.

Who is familiar with problem? Or has

knowledge or idea on how to solve this one?

In order to solve the problem, let’s discuss

these first.

Lately, we talked about rational number or

𝟏
𝒙
𝟏
= 𝟓−𝒙 , 𝟒
𝒙 + = −𝟓
𝒙
, 𝒙𝟐
= 𝟏
𝒙+𝟏 𝒙+𝟏
,…
expression. Now, let’s have rational
expression. Is Anyone of you knows or has
an idea of what is rational expression? 400=1,500/t or 400t=1,500 or t = 1,500/400.
A. PRESENT

A rational equation is an equation that

contains one or more rational expressions.

Based on the given definition, who can give

me some examples of rational equation?

If you were asked to write the rational

equation of the given problem lately, what
would be your answer?

Here are the rules or steps in solving

rational equations.
1. Eliminate the rational expressions in the
equation by multiplying both sides of the
equation by the LCD. a) x/5 + ¼ = x/2
2. Solve the equation. the LCD of the denominator is 20
3. Check your solution. (20) x/5 + ¼ = x/2 (20) multiply both sides by the LCD
Using Bagatrix 4x + 5 = 10 x apply the distributive property
and then simplify
5 = 6x subtract 4x from both sides
Let’s try solving these rational equations 5/6 = x divide both sides by 6.
using the rules or steps stated above. check:
5
5/6 1
+ = 6
a) x/5 + ¼ = x/2 5 4 2
1 1 5
b) ¼ = 3/x – ½ + =
6 4 12
2+3 5
=
12 12
Who wants to volunteer for a) and b)? 5 5
=
12 12

1 3 1
b) = −
4 𝑥 2
the LCD of the denominator is 4x.
1 3 1
(4x) = − (4x) multiply both sides by the LCD
4 𝑥 2
x = 12–12x apply the distributive property and
then simplify
3x = 12 add 2x to both sides
x=4 divide both sides by 3.
check:
1 3 1
= −
4 4 2
1 3 2
= −
4 4 4
1 1
=
4 4

𝑦+3 4
𝑐) 𝑦−1=𝑦−1
the LCD of the denominator is y-1
(y-1) 𝑦+3=
4
𝑦−1 𝑦−1
(y-1) multiply both sides by y-1.
y+3=4 simplify
y=1 subtract 3 from both sides
check:
𝑦+3 4
=
𝑦−1 𝑦−1
1+3 4
=
1−1 1−1
4 4
=
0 0

Let’s try another one before we solve the

problem above.
c) 𝑦+3 =
4
𝑦−1 𝑦−1

Because zeros appear in the denominators,

the fractions are undefined. Thus, 1 is a false
solution, and the equation has no solution.
Such false solutions are often called
extraneous solutions.
an apparent solution that does not
solve its equation.

To checked our Solution using ICT (Bagatrix

Application)

Now, let’s try the problem given above.

Mark takes 2 hours to clean 500 bottles. Flor

takes 3 hours to clean 450 bottles. Working
together, how long should it take them to clean
1,500 bottles?

Mark: 500 Think about how many

bottles/2 hours bottles each person can
= 250 clean in one hour. This
bottles/hour is their cleaning rate.
Flor: 450
bottles/3 hours
=
150
bottles/hour

Mark & Flor Combine their

together: hourly rates to
250 + 150
determine the rate
bottles/hour =
400bottles/hour they work together.

Use one of the

work formulas to
write a rational
equation, for

example
Solve the equation
by multiplying
both sides by the
common
denominator, then
isolating t.

t = 3 ¾ hours

Answer It takes 3 hours 45 minutes for Mark and

Flor to clean 1500 bottles together.

B. APPLY

Group Activity
Go to your respective groups then assign a
facilitator, scriber and a reporter. Work on this
problem for 15 minutes.

Motion Problem: An express train travels

150km in the same time that a freight train
travels 100km. If the express train goes 20km
per hour faster than the freight train, find the
rate of each train.

Here’s the rubric on how you will be graded

in this activity.
C. Review
What are rational numbers? Rational
equations?

Show the flashcards. Let them identify

whether it’s a rational number, rational
equation or irrational number.

What are the steps in solving rational

equation?

Where and How can we use rational equation

in our daily lives?

What is/are the importance of rational

equations in our daily living?

IV. EVALUATION
 A large pipe can empty a pool in 6 hours and a small pipe can empty the same pool in 9
hours. How long will it take for both pipes to empty the pool?

V. ASSIGNMENT

 Carlos and Robert leave town A at the same time. They are heading for town B. Carlos,
driving his sports car, travels 65kph. Robert, on a motorcycle travels 55kph. How long
will it be before they are 55km apart?
 Study in advance about rational inequalities.
