Mechanics of Materials, 8e, is intended for undergraduate Mechanics of Materials courses in

Mechanical, Civil, and Aerospace Engineering departments. It also serves as a useful reference for
engineering students and professionals. Containing Hibbeler’s hallmark reader-oriented
features, this text is in four-color with a photorealistic art program designed to help readers visualize
difficult concepts. A clear, concise writing style and more examples than any other text further
contribute to readers’ ability to master the material.

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering
(major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and
Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University. Hibbeler’s professional experience
includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and
structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Tucson. He has
practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana. Hibbeler currently teaches at the University
of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown
State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

I have used previous editions of this textbook off and on for several years teaching a Mechanics of
Materials course and I do not have any problems whatsoever with the book. By itself I would rate it
5. This review is meant to be VERY critical of the publisher's effort with the online homework in
MasteringEngineering. I am not new to MasteringEngineering, having used it in both Statics and
Dynamics by the same author. In those courses all textbook homework problems are available for
selection by the instructor to prepare homework sets. In this textbook, however, not even half of the
textbook problems are available. In the first chapter which contains 100 end of section problems,
there are only 38 available in MasteringEngineering. There are none of the fundamental homework
problems available. I checked a later chapter also. Chapter 4 has less than half of the problems
available. Also the problems available are not always representative of chapter content so when
preparing a homework set there are problems you wish you could select that are not
available.Shame on Pearson for putting this out when it is not ready.

Last semester I had Statics that was taught from the same book as this author. Now, let me tell you
that Statics book was awesome, the examples were clear, concise, and easy to follow. It explained
very well how they did the problems. When we were told that we had to use this book for the
"Strength of Materials" class I was happy because I thought that this book would be similar to the
Statics, but I was wrong. Its like a completely different set of people did this book. The nomenclature
is outright different from the last book, and its book examples are hard to follow because they were
extremely awkward wording. The problems in the Statics book were very easy to understand (EX.
Find the force P acting on the handle of the tool). This book decided to word in such a weird way
possible that sometimes you're just confused what its asking.Thankfully, the professor is a good one
and we only use the book for problems and don't have to read the chapters.

What can I say. It's a typical required book for Engineering Majors. It has some pretty cool examples
in the beginning, but towards the end it's a little tedious and looses touch with real world
applications. It also does not do a great job at explaining shear/moment diagrams. Some other books
give great examples and charts about distributed loading. That area is touched upon heavily in the
EIT, or FE, exams.

Mechanics of Materials 6ed in SI Units, this book provides students with a clear and thorough
presentation of the theory and application of structural analysis as it applies to trusses, beams, and
frames. Emphases are placed on teaching readers to both model and analyze a structure. A
hallmark of the book, Procedures for Analysis, has been retained in this edition to provide learners
with a logical, orderly method to follow when applying theory. Chapter topics include types of
structures and loads, analysis of statically determinate structures, analysis of statically determinate
trusses, internal loadings developed in structural members, cables and arches.
