Courses cover etiology, characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of
communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan
– Including speech, language, cognition, hearing, and swallowing
– Faculty with expertise in each area to teach for each course

Students must complete 49 academic credits for the master’s degree


– 31 credits in required content coursework, 3 credits of elective coursework, 15
credits in clinic assignments
• Students who have been accepted into the graduate program may opt
into the part-time program
• In the part-time program, course-work and clinic experiences are spread
over 7-8 terms (semesters)
• Students graduate at the end of their 3rd spring semester

*Part-time students must be available to be on-campus for clinic


assignments and courses*
A minimum of five semesters of clinical practica are required

These are completed both:


– At the University of Houston Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic: A
United Way Facility or one of the community outreach centers
– And at a wide variety of clinics, schools, and hospitals in the Houston
area

Students in the graduate program have the option to complete a
Specialty Concentration

– Conducted like an independent study


• One on one with faculty member
– Students chose a faculty mentor
• Mentor and student determine project
– 3 hours of elective must go towards the project
• One three hour course
• Three one hour special topics
Students in the graduate program have the option to complete a
Master’s Thesis

– Work with a faculty member, who is the thesis chair


• Student and chair design the project
– Student takes 3 hours of Thesis in Summer (COMD 7399)
• Instead of the elective
– Student takes 3 hours of Thesis in Spring 2
• No comprehensive exam, no evidence-based practice report 2
In the second (FT) or third (PT) year, students have 2
externship placements.

• Full-time clinical practicum (30-36 hrs/wk)


• Externship contracts all around the Houston metro area
• Acute, rehabilitative, educational, and developmental
experiences
– With adults and children
• Variety of merit scholarships awarded upon admission
– Don’t have to apply for these
• Several scholarships available once admitted
– Through organizations like HACD and TSHA
– And the department
• Assistantships available
