restricting the fuel flow out the idle dis-
charge hole. This results in a lean er

th e sea t, allo wing more fue l to flow
o ut the idle d isch ar ge hol e fo r a rich-
e r id le mixtur e .
Dur ing off -idl e o pe ra tio n, the throt-
tle plate is mov ed slightly past the idle
tra nsfer slot, wh ich beg ins discha rging
fuel as it is ex posed to ma nifo ld vac -
uum. As the t hrottle plate is ope ned
still wide r, an d engine speed increases,
th e ai r flo w through the carbu retor is
also increase d . This creates a vacuum
in the ventu ri str ong enough to bring
th e mai n fuel metering system into op-
eration. The flow from the idle syste m
tape rs o ff a s th e main fuel me te ring
syste m beg ins d ischarging fu el. The
two syste ms are e ng inee red to provide

turn, is gove rned b y the speed and
powe r ou tp ut o f th e e ng ine.
At no rmal cruising sp eed s, the dif-
fer e nce in pressure between the norma l
a ir pressure in the to p of th e float
chamber and the va cu um in the ven -
tur i, forces a met er e d flo w of fuel from
th e floa t chambe r throug h the main
me te ring syste m and o ut the ma in noz-
zle , wh ich is loca ted in the venturi. The
Idle Asp irator fuel is mete red (or measured) by the
main jet as it flo ws into the bottom of
the main well (Fig . 62) .

fa cilitate the clean ing , inspe ction and
a sse mbly, use a sepa rate co nta ine r for
the co mpo ne nt parts of bo th ma jor
su basse mb lie s.
Re mo ve the a ir c lea ne r bail from
th e ca rbu re to r ai r horn (Fig . 66).
Re mo ve the fuel inle t fitting .
O n carb uretors equ ipp ed with a
da sh -p ot ("E-STICK" tran s missi on ) re-
mo ve the d ash- pot bracket screw.
Remove the f ast idle cam re ta iner
sc re w and slid e the choke operating
rod fro m t he c ho ke shaft le ve r (Fig.
67 ).
Re mo ve the automa tic c hok e ther-
mosta t cla mp screws a nd sepa rate the
th er mo st a tic cap, clam p a nd gaskets
fro m th e a ir horn (Fig. 68).

The heated a ir cha nges the temper-
a ture of the ch o ke bimetall ic sp ring,
allowing the a ir flow past the choke
plate to force th e cho ke plate open
a g a inst the d e crea se d fo rce of the
sp ring.
W he n the e ng ine is fu lly warmed
up, the force of th e bi-me ta l is reduced
to ze ro. Duri ng th is mo vem ent , the
