2. Aim And Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide the students to knowledge of fluid flow through piping systems, and
different flow measurement systems for closed and open channels.

3. Syllabus

The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas:

Flow through pipes, Flow measuring devices – Venturi meters, Orifice meters, Flow over notches – V
notch and Rectangular notch.

4. Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the fundamental theories of fluid mechanics with laboratory experiments.
2. Perform laboratory experiments related to flow analysis, energies in flow system, friction losses
in the flow through pipes, and measurement of fluid flow characteristics in closed and open
channels
3. Analyse experimental data, relate to the theoretical aspects and write laboratory reports.

5. Learning And Teaching Strategy

The practical sessions will be used to convey the concepts of the fluid mechanical principles with
suitable laboratory experiments. Private study will be used to reinforce material delivered on relevant
topics. Independent learning will be encouraged to satisfy the student’s particular interests.

Course work (Laboratory Work)

All students are required to compulsorily attend the Laboratory sessions regularly and submit the lab
report on-line for grading and plagiarism check. All lab reports should be submitted without fail before
the next experiment can be done. In addition, delay in submission and non-submission would invite
penalization by way of marks being deducted.

Lab Performance
During the Lab session the students of the batch are required to present themselves punctually in time
with their lab handbook, lab observation notebook and the required graph paper, calculator, pencils and
drawing materials. All calculations and graphs are to be done during the lab timing itself and the
observation notes should be checked (signed) by the lab in-charge. After verification of the calculations,
permitted to prepare the individual Lab Reports, and follow laboratory handbook for the report format.

Role of students
Students are expected to attend all classes regularly and study from text books once the topic is
discussed in laboratory classes. Students should participate actively in the classes by interacting with
the teacher to enhance their learning and understanding of the subject clearly. Student should submit

the lab report, and writing the examination as per the specified date. In case of extraordinary
circumstances student should inform the module leader in advance for alternative date of submission.
Any difficulty in understanding the laboratory experiment should be discussed with the module leader.

9. Teaching and Learning expectations

- This module is lab based module where the learning outcomes have to be attained through
laboratory exercises. It is mandatory for students to attend/ conduct each laboratory and
successfully achieve the learning outcomes to pass the module. Safety is mandatory during
the laboratory exercise and hence students are advised to abide by the rules and
regulations of the College while conducting laboratory exercises.

- The laboratory exercises are conducted to validate and understand the practical application
of the various theories of fluid mechanics. It is compulsory for the students to prepare for
each laboratory exercise by reading books and the given references to understand the
theoretical principles before the commencement of each laboratory exercise.

- After getting the proper laboratory demonstration and briefing from the tutor/instructor,
students are expected to get familiarize themselves with the various fluid mechanics
laboratory set up and should be able to conduct laboratory experiments independently.
Hence, students are expected to attend the laboratory demonstration carefully and with full
attention.

- It is mandatory to prepare an independent high quality report at the end of each laboratory
exercises and submit to the instructor/tutor on/before the due date. The report should be
prepared to reflect the results of the laboratory exercise by discussing the results
/achievements in detail.
