human life will be drastically impacted by this technology. There is lot of scope for
improvements of standards of existing products by usage of nanotechnology and also addition
of multiple-features will lead to creation of unique products. This technology is expected to
solve problems faced by human civilization.

I-CanNano is one of the first Indian firms to come up with indigenously developed
nanotechnology enabled products. One of the first areas chosen for commercialization is paints
& coatings, where nanotech impact is early and revolutionary.

Brief Profile – I-CanNano

Innovation Center for Applied Nanotechnology (I-CanNano) is brainchild of Dr. Arup Chatterjee,
a global authority on nanotechnology & nano-materials. I-CanNano is a classic story of
technology entrepreneurship where decade long research on nanotechnology has grown up
from laboratory scale to industrial scale and now commercializing plethora of hi-tech
innovative & high performance nanotech enabled products in global markets.

I-CanNano has developed robust process technology for industrial scale manufacturing of nano-
materials that are tunable in size & structure, scalable, and highly pure in terms of quality. I-
Can manufactures not only major elements of periodic table in nano-form but also bi/tri-
metallic alloys and their compounds. This includes nano Fe, Ag, Au, Al, Pt, Pd, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn,
Ceria, Iron Oxide, Zinc Oxide etc. Also, many novel structures of carbon viz. porous nano-
carbon, carbon nano-fiber, nano-tubes, diamond like carbon, graphite structures, ‘Y’ junction
carbon, flower structure etc.

I-CanNano has not restricted its activity in the field of nano-materials but also graduated to
development of applications in various areas of paints & coatings, composites, filters,
catalysts, electrodes, drug delivery etc. This successful development of nano-products is due to
graduation from 1st generation nanotechnology to 3rd generation nanotechnology of ordered
nano-structures that takes care of excellent dispersion characteristics.

Nanotechnology enabled paint/ coatings include various high performance & multi-functional
paints/ coatings in decorative as well as industrial segment. In decorative segment, I-CanNano
has developed nano water base paints that are low VOC, anti-fungal/bacteria/algae, hydro-
phobic, UV resistant, heat insulating with elastomeric (stretchable that cover cracks)

properties for building interiors & exteriors and these are not only environment friendly but
also robust in terms of performance & life. Similarly, wood paints & coatings that are not only
water/UV/ fungus resistant but also termite-free & fire resistant. Building segment products
include transparent coatings for plaster, glass, ceramic, stone that are water repellent, anti-
bacteria/fungal and non-polymeric.

In Industrial segment, product portfolio includes heat conducting paints, high electrically
insulating paints that withstands 5000V, high anti-corrosive paints, pollutant adsorbent paint,
high impact & scratch resistant paints, high temperature resistant paints, clear coat paints etc.

Apart from paints/coatings, activity has already started towards commercialization of

composites. I-CanNano is envisaging development of world’s largest carbon nano-fiber
manufacturing facility in India catering to not only light weight/high strength composites for
aerospace, wind blade, automotive structures but also for high abrasion resistant rubbers,
conducting inks, electrodes, etc.

I-CanNano is already having one US patent on Fuel Cell electrode and one Indian patent on
super-capacitor electrode in its credit. I-CanNano has research interest in hydrogen storage &
fuel cell development.

Apart from above, I-CanNano has developed ceramic filters with heavy metal absorption and
anti-bacteria property and also developing catalytic converter for automotives. In bio-nano
segment, research is in-progress on cancer drug delivery & contrast media for medical imaging
technology. There are many other areas where I-CanNano has already touched upon like nano-
ceria for improving fuel efficiency, nano-additives for improving lubrication efficiency of
lubricants etc. and those are also on the way to commercialization.

Wide interest & development of nanotechnology applications in real life has not demonstrated
what nanotechnology can do but also how nanotech will touch common man’s life. With
inspiration of Dr. Abdul Kalam, ex-President of India & renowned scientist, I-CanNano has
adopted his vision, “Affordable nanotechnology for common man”.

In recognition to commendable research work done by Dr. Arup Chatterjee, UK Government has
selected him under UKTI Global Entrepreneurship Programme 2006. In India, I-CanNano is
driving the industrial nanotechnology scenario across various industries in construction,
automotive, biotech, renewable energy, filters etc.

About Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is the precise and controlled fabrication or assembly of atoms and molecules

at nanometer (10-9m) dimensions, into novel materials and devices with unique properties.
1nanomtere equals 1/1000th of human hair. For example, nanoparticle in comparison to a
football is equivalent to football in comparison to earth.

Electron transfer properties of nano-sized particles of the material change from that in the
macro-sized particles. As for example some materials in the micron size may be insulator but in
the nano range it becomes conductor. The nano materials have properties like high mechanical
strength, remarkable electrical and thermal conductivity. Nanoscale powders have unique
properties. When the particle is smaller than 100nm, the particle has the properties that are
not found in the micro particle larger than 100nm. For example, when the particle diameter of
magnetic materials as iron, nickel nears to 100nm, their magnetic domains are changed from
multiple to single, and their magnetic properties also change. So in nano scale each iron oxide
acts as a nano magnet.

Nano-size: Change in properties

• Particle properties dominated by Quantum Behavior,
• Physical Properties: Color, transparency, hardness, magnetism, or electrical
conductivity can change completely
• Optical, magnetic, electrical, thermo dynamical, microbial and binding properties
changes compared to bulk conditions of the same material.
• Toxicity change.
• Melting and boiling point altered,
• Chemical reactivity and catalytic processes improved.
• Particles with primary particle sizes below 100 nanometers are characterized by an
extremely large surface-to-volume ratio: whereas with particle sizes of 1 micrometer,
i.e. 1000 nm, only about 1.5 thousandths of a percent of all atoms are located on the
surface, with a diameter of 10 nm it is already about 15 percent. The properties are
thus determined mainly by the behavior of the surface.
• It is possible to deliberately modify the properties of surfaces and endow them with
any desired function.

Conventional vs. Nanotech enabled paints/coatings
Conventional Paint System

Conventional paint system consists of micron size particles (pigments) in an organic matrix.
These micron size particles are having defects in its structure and as size increases more
defects appear. Also, gaps between micron size particles are high and so performance of paint
is combination of organic matrix & inorganic particles (with defects). Thus paint is susceptible
to ageing (of organic matrix)/defects (micron size particles) and so low/inadequate
performance is witnessed.

In nanotechnology paint system, gaps between nano-size particles are minimal due to self-
assembly features (ordered nano-structures) incorporated and small size particles. Inorganic
nano-materials are structurally defect-free and this leads to robustness in performance. In
nanotech paints, novel features are incorporated in nano-materials & dispersed in paint matrix.
Thus nanotechnology paint system is having superior performance as well as novel
characteristics that are not available in conventional paint system.

At I-CanNano, we arrange atoms & molecules in such a manner that near ideal/ideal structure
is created. E.g. incorporating nano-materials, that does not boil in nitric acid; in the paint
matrix leading to high anti-corrosive paints that withstands 4500+ hours’ salt spray.

Technology Platform Technology Product

1st Generation Nanotechnology (technology platform)

This is starting point of nanotechnology i.e. manufacturing of nano-materials in various nano-
size forms and structures. It is important to manufacture nano-size with tunability in size and
structures as well as their stabilization at that size. They tend to agglomerate with acquiring
energy from various energy sources e.g. heat energy. It is also important to have purity of the
materials when produced as well as production of large quantity (industrial quantity) with
purity in size and structures.
At present, globally various processes are used for manufacturing of nano-materials e.g.
physical process, mechanical process, chemical process, thermal process. All processes are
having limitations. Physical process is very capital intensive and scale up for producing
industrial quantity needs huge investment. Mechanical process is fraught with impurity and
sizes achieved are of higher size and so is not suitable for real nanotechnology properties.
Chemical process used still not optimized for purity of materials.

ICAN uses proprietary thermo-chemical process that addresses all the key requirements for
manufacturing nano-materials:
1. Tune-ability in size – 10 nm, 20 nm, 40 nm ….. (producing target-able size)
2. All elements of periodic table including rare earth metals, oxides and compounds and
all structures of carbon, alloys
3. Scale up – produce in kg to ton quantities – suitable for industrial applications
4. Stability of size
5. Purity – 99.99% purity (with size tune-ability)
6. Cost – lowest mfg. cost
7. Low capital cost

Worldwide scientists and technologies are working to address and crossing the above
technology entry barrier although not very successful. This is very knowledge intensive domain,
and worldwide companies are investing millions to billions to dollars to cross this barrier. It is
important to understand quantum physics and in-depth understanding at atomic level which is
not easy.

2nd Generation Nanotechnology (technology platform)

To bring nanotechnology to industrial usage, it is important to create dispersion of nano-
materials. Nano-materials do not disperse easily in various matrix, they tend to agglomerate or
float or settle in a matrix. They need be suitably modified by attaching various tags or
functional groups. These functionally modified nano-materials can be dispersed in various
media like water, alcohol, resins,…etc. It is important that these nano-materials should remain
stable, non-reactive with the matrix and exhibit the properties that are being aimed at.

I-CanNanoTM
Worldwide, scientists are trying to address the barrier in dispersion technology for
dissemination of nano-particles. However, still many barriers to be crossed to bring successful
incorporation of nano-particles in a media.

ICAN has successfully dispersed nano-materials in all types of media like water, oil, resins,
alcohols etc.

3rd Generation Nanotechnology(technology platform)

Nano-materials behave like atoms since most of the electrons are floating on the surface.
Process of assembling the nano-materials to form custom made structures is the aim of nano-
technology i.e. assembling atoms and molecules in such a manner that the target
property/function is aimed at is achieved. This is the most difficult part of nanotechnology
dissemination. This is the key to successful nanotechnology final product manufacturing i.e. at
technology product level.

Development of ICAN Nano Coatings (e.g. glass and ceramic) proves successful self-assembly of
nano-materials thus graduating to technology product developments.

This about creating final product i.e. formulations, composites (eventually components) that

Where the ‘wealth lies’? – Nano-enabled Products

Even if we can reach agreement on where the balance is to be struck between established and
novel markets for nanotechnology, there is as yet, no clear answer to where in the nano value
chain, wealth will be created. It’s hard to get away from the notion that in the end
nanotechnology is about exploiting the commercial properties of nano “building blocks” –
nanotubes, nanowires and the like.

One trend/model that is emerging - investors not interested in investing in companies that
make building blocks. They are looking for the ones that “use somebody else's building blocks
in order to take a product to market.”

If we take a closer look at above graph from Lux Research Report (encircled in dots), the major
market of nanotechnology is emerging is the nano-enabled product i.e. final products have high
performance, whereas nano-materials hardly gets figured out.

So, success in nanotechnology is in creating nanotech enabled world beating final products
that creates new markets and disrupts existing market and thus creates enormous value
and the wealth.
