Solar Oven
The school canteen needs your help!
Their oven has stopped working but they still need to cook all the lunches. The canteen
has asked Room 12 to come up with a solution to fix the problem - they need you to
make a Solar Oven!
Brief
Your task is to come up with a solar oven
design which will harness the power of the sun
to help the canteen cook their lunches.
Project Specifications
Your solar oven must follow these
specifications:
Must use aluminum foil
Must be made from clean materials
Project Evaluation
Once you have completed your final product, 
you will create a design information brochure. 
The brochure should include a labelled diagram 
and address/answer the following questions:
Are the materials used suitable to be used
around food? Why?
Will your solar oven heat substances faster
than the sun? Do an experiment to find out.
How does the aluminum speed up the
heating process?
Time
This project will be completed alongside the
chemical science unit of work. If you finish
your classwork early or have spare time you
can use it to work on your design.
Design presentations will happen at the end of
the term.
Generating Ideas
You will need to draft 3 possible designs for
the solar oven. Once you have crested 3 draft
designs, you will need to choose only 1 to build.
Remember to ask yourself "Does my design
match the design brief?".
Project Management
Step 1: Research solar ovens to gain an
understanding of the specific design needs.
Step 2: Create 3 draft design ideas for your
solar oven.
Step 3: Choose 1 design from the drafted ideas.
Step 4: Research and identify the materials to 
be used (make sure you refer to Project 
Specifications). 
Step 5: Produce/Create a prototype of your final 
design. 
Step 6: Evaluate your solar oven
& create a design information brochure. 
 Step 7: Present your product.
Project Presentation
 Once you have completed your solar
oven, you will have to present you design to
the canteen staff. You will present your design
along with the design information brochure.
You must create a 'slogan' to accompany your
design, which will help the canteen staff in
their decision making.
